ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE INVITES GA TO PACIFIC RIM TRAINING CAMP

Following intensive negotiations and discussions between Michael Ryan, the Chairman of the Board of Gridiron Australia Limited and the Arena Football League in the United States, GA are proud to announce the formal invitation for Gridiron Australia personnel to attend the inaugural Arena Football Pacific Rim Training Camp to be held in Hawaii from Monday February 4th to Sunday February 10th 2002.
The camp will be run by Arena Football, and we are pleased to be a part of this exciting new venture, which has had a limited exposure outside of the United States, until now. The camp is for invitees selected by the Australian Gridiron Coaches Association, and ratified by the Chairman, to participate in the camp. Not only will players be going to Hawaii, but they will be joined by officials from the AGOA, coaches from the AGCA, training personnel as well as various administration personnel from around the country. All up, there will be around 80 Gridiron Australia people traveling to Hawaii A highlight for the week, will be the opportunity for those attending to go to the Pro-Bowl on Saturday 9th February as guests of Arena Football.
The camp will culminate with the players participating in an exhibition game being played on the final night, with all proceeds to benefit emergency workers who have been working tirelessly since the attacks on September 11 in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. It is hoped that following the anticipated success of the training camp, Arena Football will be sending teams to Australia in 2002 for some demonstration games, where those players who participated at the camp, will have the opportunity to participate in these games also. Gridiron Australia are excited at the potential of working closely with Arena Football to develop the game in the Pacific Rim, and GA would like to thank Arena Football, for assisting in creating this opportunity for those people going to Hawaii.
More information, including a breakdown of the camp activities and schedule will be posted soon. (For more info & contacts go to the Gridiron Australia Web Site www.gridironaustralia.org.au.

AUSSIES FINISH 4TH IN NFL FLAG CHAMPIONSHIPS

Melbourne's Lilydale High representing Australia has finished 4th in the 10 team NFL Flag Football World Championships held in Berlin last weekend.

The Australians tied for 1st in their pool after going 3-1 in their preliminary matches eventually graded 2nd to Canada on points differential.

This meant a semi final match against the US where the eventual undefeated Champions proved way to strong winning 54-27.

The final game was a classic 3rd place playoff against Mexico. Trailing by 15 points in the 2nd half the Aussies launched a great comeback scoring as time expired ... alas they were unable to convert the final 2 point play to send the match into overtime.

Overall the USA, defeated by Australia in the Semi Finals last year, won the championships, the Runnemede (NJ) Eagles defeating Canada 33-21 in the final

GRIDIRON SOUTH AUSTRALIA JUNIOR SEASON
Inaugural Junior Grand Final - Wed Aug 22 @ Pines Stadium
Port Adelaide Spartans 19   d   Southern District Oilers  0

Royal Show Display A Great Success

Hundreds of Royal Adelaide Showgoers took part in an interactive display from Gridiron South Australia on the events final Saturday.

Situated in the DETE (Departrment of Education Training and Emplyment) X-Site, the site involved the showing of Gridiron Videos, display of equipment club, state and national jerseys and pamphlets on the league and many of its clubs.

Most importantly the league purpose built its own throwing target and over 300 people took part in the hourly "Quarterback Challenges".   Such was the interest in the display the it finsihed an hour earlier than anticpated because the participant

Over 540,000 people go to the Royal Adelaide Show each year with last Saturdays crowd about 87,000.

Gridiron SA wishes to thank both DETE for the opportunity to put on the display and Dwayne Armstrong from NFL Australia for the provision of hundreds of giveaway prizes for the occasion.

Gridiron Radio Show to re-launch this Summer

Thanks to the sponsorship of Black & White Trucks the South Australian Gridiron Show will be back on air this Summer.

Once again the duo of Grant Keiller and Ausgrid's Phil Herden will join host Darryl Smith for a half hour about Gridiron, Gridiron and nothing but Gridiron.

This year it looks like the show will be scheduled on a Friday morning (7.30-8.00am) on 5RPH 1197am. The first show is down for Friday November 9th, one week before the senior season commences.

Spartans Claim Historic "Triple Crown"

The Port Adelaide Spartans became the first SA club to win a premiership in every level of competition (seniors, junior contact & junior flag) when they shut out the Southern District Oilers 19-0 in the inaugural Gridiron SA Junior Contact Grand Final.

Both defences started well the Oilers pinning the Spartans on their own goal line before Grand Final MVP Andrew Novice sprang into action, the Port Quarterback finding a hole on the right side and going the length of the field (79yds) for the opening touchdown.

That 6-0 lead was extended late in the 2nd quarter when Travis Burden ran in a 2nd touchdown from 38 yards out, the half time score 12-0 Spartans.

Any hopes Southern Districts had of launching a comeback were squashed when Novice unleashed a long touchdown bomb of 48yds to Ryan Glaser who made the juggling catch in the end zone.

Port Adelaide's championship also created a historic double as they became the 1st team to win the SA senior contact & junior contact title in the same year. It was their 7th premiership overall.

Whilst Southern Districts came away the vanquished Grand Final night they can take a lot of pride from their efforts overall as the main driving force behind the introduction of junior contact in South Australia, a key development necessary to ensure the future and success of the sport in this state.

The 17th senior season of SA Gridiron kicks off @ Pines Stadium, November 16th.
