Next Game: 22nd June 2003 against the Berwick Miners after a week off.
18 - 6 victory over the Geelong Wildcats.
Crusaders 14 vs. Rangers 26
The
Crusader offence came up against the number 1 defence in the league on Sunday,
with the Crusaders going straight into a four WR set to try and disrupt the
Ranger D, the first drive was good with the Offence moving the chains in the
first 2 minutes but a couple of wayward passes meant that they had to punt. On
the next drive it took 2 plays to score a 60-yard TD strike to WR Steve Curwood
who once had the ball could not be caught by the Ranger secondary, this was the
only scoring done by the Crusaders as they stuck with their 4 WR set till
halftime.
Coming out of the half 26-6 down the Crusader Offence went back to the ground
attack, with solid runs from Nol Arabit and Charles Lavea-Williams, with great
blocking from the left side of the line. Once again led by LG
Louise Lavea-Williams and rookie LT Anthony Caminti. With the run game in full
effect the Rangers were unable to stop either the speed or power of the Crusader
backfield with great blocking from full back Peter Steve to open up both RB's on
significant gains. A QB keep to Glenn Parke for a 1-yard TD and the ensuing 2
point conversion from Charles Lavea-Williams brought the Crusaders back to
26-14.
There were both negatives and positives from this game and hopefully the offence
will take the negatives and turn them around next time these two teams meet. A
fantastic game of both skill speed and power from both teams on both sides of
the ball.
Special mention goes to Steve Curwood, Charles Lavea-Williams and Glenn Parke
who have scored 1 TD in all 3 games so far this season. Also mentions to Nol
Arabit, Anthony Caminti, Louise Lavea-Williams and Peter Steve for an
outstanding game once again.
Crusaders 20 vs. Warriors 7
The
Crusader Offence has again showed it's potential to score points early when on
the first drive of the game the offence drove the ball 70 yards in a time
consuming ball controlled effort that lead to a great run of 20yards by Charles
Lavea-Williams to give the Crusaders a 6-0 lead after five minutes into the
game. With an outstanding game once again from the defence we were able to get
the ball back with a 50 yard punt return from Peter Steve to set up Glenn Parke
hitting Steve Curwood in the corner of the endzone for a 12-0 lead going into
halftime. The Crusaders then came out and once again after a tedious start to
the second half were able to score once again with Charles Lavea-Williams
scoring a 3 yard TD to blow the score out to 20-6.
The League leading Crusader Defence once again came out to play. The D-line made
countless plays behind the Line of Scrimmage, lead by Louise and Pat who where
continuously double teamed. Their drive and effort constantly destroyed the
Warrior Pass pocket putting enormous pressure on their QB. D-Ends, Brett and
Tony, contained the QB in the Pass pocket not allowing him to escape the bull
rush of League's premier D-Tackle.
The pressure generated by the whole d-line helped produce 3 int's for the
Crusader secondary, with a spectacular across the field return by Nol, this was
taken back due to a block in the back (a soft one at that!)
The Warriors were not able to generate any sustained pressure on the defence
there inability to string 2 successful plays together is a testament to the
sustained pressure and aggression of the Crusader Defence.
The Crusader Defence was rarely challenged on the Day
Best players for the
Crusaders on offence were Steve Curwood, Glenn Parke, Peter Steve, Nol Arabit
and Charles Lavea-Williams with his power runs once again setting up a good win
for the Crusaders and taking them to 2-0
for the season.
Berwick Miners 7 Vs. Western Crusaders 34
Offensively, the game plan went accordingly, the Miners had no answer for both
our power running game as well as our passing attack. With several good catches
made by Steve Curwood (17) and also great running from our backfield. Charles
Lavea-Williams had a great game as did Nol Arabit, who also ran with both power
and speed.
Peter Steve had a good game playing FB, both in running the ball and blocking
for the running back's.
Our Offensive Line had an excellent game, particularly from our Rookie Left
Tackle, Anthony Caminti. We were able to run left with both him and Louise Lavea-Williams
blocking well. Penalties hurt us early but we were
able to get it together and score. QB Glenn Parke had a solid game in both play
calling and passing, as well as a few run plays where he was able to pick up
valuable yards when needed.
Defensively we play a sound game allowing the miners to gain only 3 first downs
for the game. We dominated their running attack with our front 8 being too
strong for there opponents. Louise Lavea-Williams constantly defeated a double
team and l driving forward producing a sack and several tackles in the back
field. He is a dominating force on the defence allowing his team mates to wreck
the play before it started. The defence was able to string the sweep out with
good disciplined pursuit.
Other stand-outs were -
John Wilson
played a very good game showing his class as LB - A special mention to Brent for
a good game at DE considering it was his first game - Well Done. Tony Harris 1
intercept and 1 punt return for TD - a real suprise at
safety - Steve Curwood a top hit on his opponent to produce a fumble and
recovery by the Crusaders. A good game from the defence - rarely challenged.
All in all it was a solid performance by the Offence, every player played their position, from this we can only get better.
