January 1896

Monday  20th 

Fine sunny day. Rain at midnight. Went along line up to Xg. in morning & had lunch there. Procured bolts at store for Mr. D's bunk. Turner making better progress started @ 1/10 cutting working also @ 1/6 & 1/48. O'Connors men @ Devn. cuttings & @ 2/75. Aherne working @ IV pier 3/5 bridge. Went up to Xg. in evening to final meeting of Progress Comittee returned afterwards to Lynchford.

Tuesday  21st 

Showery morning cleared up at noon. Gangs as yesterday xept. deviation gang started sidecutting for bank @ 2/65. Aherne placed IV pier 3/5 bridge in position good bottom soft quartzite on edge. Had Blanchard trying founds of bridges @ 4/43, 4/45. Sent him up to 15M in afternoon for station yard plan. Found good limestone bottom @ 4/43. Went up to Dramatic performance @ Xg.after tea by Dr. Abbott's Coy. of amateurs. Returned afterwards to Lynchford.

Wednesday  22nd

Fine day. Gangs @ 1/12, 1/50, 2/65, 2/75 & Aherne at IV pier 3/5 bridge which he finished today. Blanchard at river bottoms in morning. Afternoon - set out pegged & levelled road Devn. @ 4M on Ry - Gave Biddel & Sweeney list of culverts reqd. on Halls Ck. section for their tendering. Graham in re telephone line Lynchford to Goring's Ck. permanent poling. Rec. word from Mr. D. to supply mine manager with all survey notes in my possession (copies). Also to set out Crusher Siding for Mr. Sticht. 

Thursday  23rd

Fine Morning. Rain from 4pm very wet night. 2 1/2ins. @ 15M. Took Xsecns. of Strahan site & particulars of culverts in morning.Went up to Xg. after lunch to get mine plans & see re Crusher Siding, but Mr. Sticht was away at mine. Made up all qties. etc. for estimate after tea.

Friday 24th

Very wet morning. River very high abt. 9am. Cleared up in afternoon tho still showery. Made up estimate at first mile past Lynchford. Mr. D. arrived at noon & had lunch here, went into plans & estimate with him, before he left for Xg. Graham signed contract for next two miles of permanent poling of telephone line, tonight & Biddel in for specification of culverts let him take them away for night. Bradley up this morning to inspect sawn timber at pits for bridges, passed 11 beams. Sent Blanchard up to him with brand & then on to 15M for blanket & level- W. H. Burgess @ Queen to lunch

Saturday  25th 

Heavy showers all day. Set out two culverts near office for Sweeney's. Went up to Xg. with Blanchard to set out siding at Crusher. Passed Mr. D. on his way back to Camp Spur. Finished work at crusher at 5pm & plotted it up after tea. Stopped night there - gangs at work 2/70 & 1/7 all rest knocked off

Sunday  26th 

Returned to Lynchford to dinner. Went up to 15M to tea & left sketch of Crusher Siding to go to Mr. D. in morning.

Monday  27th

Showery most of day, gangs @ work. Cut 11, S.Cut, 2/63 (which was finished at noon) cut no. 6 started at noon, cut No. 2, & forming 0/63. Bridge hands @ 3/19 abutments. Measured up right thro line today & went on to Crossing. Saw Mr. Sticht re Crusher Siding & Mr. Bowes Kelly. Making up return after tea. Sweeny's started culverts today @ 3/6700.  J. J. Gaffney up last night, went over line today give him qties. of mile from 3/60 to 4/60

Tuesday  28th 

Very wet all day. No work being done along line xept culvert men & telephone line. Finished return & report & sent Blanchard up to 15M with them after lunch. Gaffney in re next mile, gave him particulars of road Devn. required - Made tracing of trig. plan of mine for Mr. Clark & cal. all bearings required etc.

Wednesday  29th

Fine day, weather seems to be at last taking up. Aherne in early & left tender for first bridge @ 4/43 (£266). Went up to Xg. with Blanchard, measured a switch at sawmill to obtain particulars for Mr. D. Left tracing & letter for mine. Had lunch @ Xg. & came on down.
