COAL RIVER HISTORY

GEORGE BURN
1800-1869

Born circa 1800.  Married Elizabeth Mary Ann Harris 25th January 1827 at Weston Villa, Coal River. Had at least ten children; Andrew William, Kenneth, George Hobbs (b. 1828, d. 1829), Andrew William (b. 1829, Sorell), Ann Jane (b. 1831), George Gunning (b. 1834), Kenneth (b. 1840), Louisa (b. 1841), Paton James (b. 1847, Richmond), Melvina Mary (b. 1850).  Burn arrived in Van Diemen's Land per Portland on 10th September 1824.  He was immediately granted 1,000 acres on the Shannon River in October, and a further 1,000 acres adjoining in July 1828.  Burn named this property Netherwood. By 1831, Burn had erected a "capital Hut and stock yards."  The property was not fenced, however, by Burn, because the boundary had not been marked out by the government.  Burn did not live at the Shannon River for long.

In 1827 he moved to the Coal River, where he bought 80 acres from George Weston Gunning.  Burn secured a further 800 acres through his marriage to Gunning's step-daughter, Elizabeth Mary Ann Harris.  The property at the Shannon was leased out to a Mr. Thomason, at "merely a nominal rent."  In 1831 Burn applied for a further 560-acre grant on the Coal River.  Although the Land Board recommended that he receive the grant, Lieut-Governor Arthur refused the application, stating that on neither grant had Burn "done anything more than put up a miserable hut", and questioned the reasoning behind Burn "having leased the property [and] request[ing] the Board… to consider him entitled to augmentation."  Accordingly, Burn did not receive his additional grant.

In February 1839, Burn purchased 668 acres on the Coal River.  Burn was leasing 1,800 acres of Campania during 1858-62, being that part of the property that lay to the east of the Coal River.  This was Lot 3 of the property which was offered for sale in 1859.  In 1861, Burn also owned 3,300 acres of sheep-run "near the Ouse", which would have been his Netherwood property.  Burn built the Richmond Steam Flour Mill (now the Mill House).  In 1842 Burn owned Mill Field, Richmond, upon which the steam mill was later built.  Died 23rd August 1869.  Buried in Gunning Vault, St Luke's Cemetery, Richmond.
