COAL RIVER HISTORY

SIMON MCCULLOGH

Convict and publican.  Arrived in Van Diemen's Land per Minerva on 7th June 1818.

The Land Commissioners, when inspecting St. Paul's River, observed that:
"Smith called the 'Dealer', has had S. Lord's Cattle and Sheep for these seven years on the thirds, Lord who lives in Sydney, has a grant nearly at the opposite side of the River, his sheep are swum over and grazed here continually, together with those belonging to a Man of the name of McCullogh who received a free pardon for apprehending a Murderer of the name of Godliman."1
McCullogh was licensee of the Jolly Farmer's in Richmond during 1834.  On 9th June 1840 McCullogh applied to the Surveyor-General seeking to purchase 200 acres of Crown land located in the parish of Ormaig.  McCullogh stated that the land was bound on the north by "John Morgan's location and another tract of 100 acres", on the east by "part of William Walkinshaw's grant", on the south by "a location of 40 acres to Owen Dogherty" and on the west by Morgan's western boundary.  The request was "not entertained - below area 640 acres."2

McCullogh was leasing Sir John Owen's Cartwright's Farm in 1842.  Peter McCullogh was "in charge" of the property which had a complete wooden cottage on it. Licensee of the Union Hotel in 1841.  Transferred the licence to John Shuttle in September 1849.  McCullogh returned to the Union Hotel as licensee in September 1853.  In 1858, McCullogh also owned a 304 acre farm at Spring Hill Bottom, which he leased to Thomas Kearney.  This property was Lot 39 which McCullogh owned in 1847.  McCullogh himself was leasing the 910-acre Long Hill from Charles Wilcock, as well as 1,000 acres of land (later known as Morville) from Sir John Owen in 1858.  Other property owned by McCullogh in 1858 included a 20-acre paddock off Smith's Road, Richmond.  Licensee of Union Hotel in 1867.  Married Mary O'Keefe at Richmond in 1847.  Had at least seven children: Simon Richard (b. 1850), un-named male (b. 1853), Margaret (b. 1855), Catherine (b. 1857), Robert (b. 1859), Ellen (b. 1861) and Michael Edmund (b. 1862).
