Farmer. Married Harriet Fitzgerald at Hobart in 1841. Had at least eight children: James (b. 1841), Patrick Augustine (b. 1843), Mary (b. 1845), Eleanor Anne (b. 1847), Hugh (b. 1849), William Francis (b. 1850), a male (b. 1852) and Harriett (b. 1855).
In late 1828 Cassidy applied to purchase a grant of 500 acres at Old Beach. The land adjoined grants held by Thrupp, Penny, and Cassidy's existing holding at Old Beach. Cassidy stated that he already held 60 acres by grant and 630 acres by purchase. Of the existing holdings, some 80 acres had been improved. He stated "I have erected buildings to a great extent with a large extent of Fencing & other Improvements to the value of Seven Hundred Pounds."1 The reason Cassidy was applying for the additional land was that he was in possession "of a large quantity of Stock" and he had "not sufficient Land for them to Run over."2 Cassidy advertised his 1,400-acre etate at Old Beach for sale in September 1840 due to "ill health."3
In 1858, Cassidy owned the 1,300-acre property at Richmond later known as Marengo. A further 1,063 acres of "bush land" near Richmond at Tea Tree was also owned and farmed by Cassidy. The 1,655-acre property Woodburn, adjoining Richmond and fronting the Coal River was owned by Cassidy also, and that was where he resided. The 80-acre Lime-Kiln Farm was owned by Cassidy, but rented to Thomas Burgess. Additionally, Cassidy leased 400 acres adjoining Woodburn from the estate of Captain James Booth. Cassidy also owned the following in 1858: cottage and acres of land in Victoria Street, Richmond (leased by Patrick McManus); leased 3,700 acres of crown land at the Eastern Marshes. This last block of land probably adjoined Green Burns at Swanston, which was also being leased by Cassidy. Owned by John Thompson of England, the farm comprised 5,020 acres of freehold and 4,410 acres of crown land.4
