COAL RIVER HISTORY

FRANCIS DONNOCHIE
1809-1833

Convict and servant.  Born circa 1809.  He was assigned to James Kestall Buscombe, and although his record was less than impressive, he was obviously valued by his master.

Sentenced to transportation for Life on 8th April 1826.  Donnochie stated that he had stolen a watch from a Toll Bar.  He said "I have been in the Black Hole of Kilmarnock many a time; mother lives 4 miles from Kilmarnock - I was out of employ."

Arrived in Van Diemen's Land per Asia (2) on 30th November 1827.  Donnochie was assigned to James Kestall Buscombe at Richmond.  On 7th January 1829, Donnochie was sentenced by magistrate T.A. Lascelles to receive 25 lashes as punishment for neglect of duty and insolence as charged by Buscombe.  Buscombe charged him with disobedience of orders and insolence on 11th December 1830, and Donnochie was sentenced to hard labour for three months, and then to be returned to his master.  Donnochie was charged on 18th October 1831 with "assaulting and threatening Master Edwin Lascelles".  He was admonished and discharged by James Gordon.

He was again charged with neglect of duty by Buscombe on 20th January 1832, but Gordon simply admonished and discharged him.  Within six months he was before court again, this time on 2nd July 1832 charged by Buscombe with assaulting and beating George Kemp.  W.T. Parramore dismissed the charges.  Seven days later, however, Parramore sentenced Donnochie to receive 25 lashes for neglect of duty.  He was next before the court on 13th October, this time charged by Buscombe with "drunk and very disorderly conduct".  Parramore duly sentenced Donnochie to receive 25 lashes.  On 6th February 1833, Buscombe charged him with disobedience of orders, and he was reprimanded by John Hunt Butcher and Parramore.

His final court appearance was on 3rd June 1833 when Buscombe charged him with being "Drunk & out after hours."  This time he was sentenced by Butcher and Parramore to seven days imprisonment and hard labour.

Donnochie was killed on 28th November 1833 "on his Road to Richmond with his Master's Cart."  The coronial inquest found "accidental death".  Buried 1st December 1833 aged 24 years in St. Luke's Cemetery, Richmond.
