Convict. Also known as Geraghty. Infamous for the killing of William Kearney on 1st January 1853.
Born circa 1791 in County Westmeath, Ireland. Garaghty was a Roman Catholic, and could neither read nor write. Arrived in New South Wales per Bencoolen on 25th August 1819. Arrived in Van Diemen's Land per Admiral Cockburn on 1st December 1819. Garaghty had his Ticket of Leave by 4th October 1823 when he was fined 5s. For being "Drunk & disorderly yesterday."1 Tried for the murder of William Kearney on 1st January 1853, and found guilty of manslaughter. He was sentenced to seven years transportation.
He arrived at Port Arthur on 20th June 1854, and was sent onto Impression Bay on 5th July 1854. Captain Malcolm Laing Smith took Garaghty with him to Flinders Island on 12th July 1854. Captain Smith was the former Superintendent of the Wybalenna settlement, and he leased the whole of Flinders Island for £30 per annum from 1850 until 1861.2 On 26th January 1855 Garaghty returned to Impression Bay, and four days later he was classed as an invalid. Garaghty died at Impression Bay on 8th August 1855.3
