Born 13th June 1846 at Green Ponds. Son of William Henry Ellis and Harriet Vincent. Married Mary Jane Reardon at Forcett in 1878. Had at least six children; Percival Rivers (b. 1879), Charles Robert (b. 1880), Arthur Vincent (b. 1883), Cyril Gordon (b. 1885), Harold Henry (b. 1887) and Frank Vernon (b. 1889). Schooled at Mr J.O.O. McArdell's Mornington School, Bellerive. Partner with his brother, Vincent Ellis, at Pleasant Place, Jordan River.
Charles Ellis later farmed on his own for 3 ½ years and then farmed Ponsonby Vale, Whitefoord. Ellis then leased Riversdale of 2,300 acres at Richmond, and subsequently purchased the property. In 1878, Ellis was also leasing the Carrington property. In January 1879, Ellis had commenced the seasons' wheat carting, and had "about 1,500 bushels in stack.."1 Ellis later also purchased Colebrookdale, Lower Jerusalem, a property of 2,200 acres. The properties provided 320 acres of cropping ground, as well as extensive sheep runs. Circa 1880, Ellis received £1,500 for 7,500 bushels of wheat. Dairying also constituted a part of the farm activities, with 25 cows being milked daily. Milk was provided for P J Nichols' Butter Factory in Richmond. Ellis was also a shareholder in the Country Milk Supply Company, which he also supplied. Elected Councillor for Richmond Municipality on 7th December, 1893. Died 9th August 1909 aged 63 years. Buried in St. Luke's Cemetery, Richmond.
