This site has been
produced by a Gouldian breeder for breeders. This is not a "how to"
publication, there are plenty of books for that, but more of a Tips and Tricks on
Housing, Feeding and Breeding these beautiful Australian finches.
I have included a question and answer type format so that any particular problem can be
addressed. If anyone has any additional information please E-mail me and I shall
include it on this site.
Which is the best design for my aviary ?
Without a doubt, the rectangular box type aviary has proved to be the most successful.
In warmer climates, Northern NSW and further north, this aviary can be half
covered at one end, so there are no draughts, with uncontrolled access for the
birds into the open section. This gives the birds a good mix of fresh air and sunlight.
This type of aviary also accumulates birds to cooler conditions and produces a stronger
bird. This can be seen when breeding many of the new colour mutations, as these
mutations are generally a weaker bird than the standard normal gouldian finch. Yet once
they survive a normal winter in this environment they become much stronger and breed
more readily.
In climates South of Coffs Harbour breeders generally use a fully enclosed aviary with
controlled access to an outside flight. This enables them to lock their birds in at
night.
