To establish a type by having one or two cats
dominant in a pedigree can be advantageous. It is known that for
some unknown reason some lines combine well and produce outstanding stock,
yet other lines - often from two well known and outstanding animals - simply
do not 'click' and throw back to produce very ordinary stock. This
has to be established by trial and error. When you discover two compatible
lines you can carry on, outcrossing occasionally, then going back hard
on to the original lines. Abandon any breeding that throws poor quality
stock: it is too difficult to rectify lines that don't match well.
Usually, when you are compelled to go 'out' to a totally foreign line,
the type suffers for a gereration or two. However, the animals and
progency become stronger and healthier and gerneral breeding problems are
usually decreased dramatically.
