This site follows the experiences of a Canadian lifeguard as she travels to Australian surf lifesaving club during 2001.

Leisha Thorne, a pool lifeguard from St Catharines in Ontario, Canada, will be writing not only about her adventures as she tries her hand at surf lifesaving some of Victoria's toughest surf beaches, she will be examining the culture and mini-societies of Aussie surf clubs, as well as providing some valuable advice to any other overseas visitor planning a trip 'Down Under'.

Leisha's trip to Australia has been in the planning stage since 1999.  In early 2000 she contacted Ben Rooks, then Promotions Liaison Officer of the Carrum Surf Life Saving Club.

She wrote: "Hi Ben.  I'm not sure if you remember me but we talked earlier about how to become a lifeguard in another country.  What I'm writing about now, is an idea I have for your website.  I am still determined to travel to Australia next year and the timing will be during your summer season.  The idea for your website is an ongoing article series about a Canadian travelling to different parts of Australia.  In this I would include information that I have gathered from different lifeguarding stations.  I want to give a perspective on what an 'out-of-towner' would think of the lifesaving experience.  To me, it is
like a whole different culture when compared to my lifeguarding background."

Ben loved the idea and quickly agreed to the project.  At this stage the trip was to begin in November 2000.  In June 2000 Leisha had knee surgery and this delayed the proposed arrival to January 2001.  Now that plane tickets have been bought, it is now the end of February.

Since the initial concept was agreed to the Carrum SLSC site unfortunatly ceased to exist.  This was not to deter Leisha and Ben, who agreed to set up a new, independent and truely unique site.  This site.  Being independant of any surf lifesaving club or association, this site allows Leisha and Ben to tell things as they are, or at least how they perceive them to be.

While Leisha writes her diary, Ben will provide the rest of the site's content, and provide an Australian's viewpoint.  Ben has also recruited a number of other people to assist with this, including Jenni Gregg-Lowe, who grew up in Canada but is now proud to call Australia home, and Nicole Wootten who will provide a lifesaver's girlfriend's impression of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

We hope that you visit this site regularly, as we plan to update it consistantly.  Who knows what you might learn...

Thanks for visiting.
