An attractive, well laid-out beach and reserve, with
all the usual public amenities, except for a lack of
public toilet facilities.
The
Beach
Williamstown beach is loacted just south of the
Williamstown Railway Station. It is laso backed by the Esplenade,
making it a very accessible beach. A foreshore reserve is located
at the eastern end and contains the Anglers Club, the pier, a car park, a
park and a picnic area. The beach is 880m long and faces almost due
south. It receives waves during strong southerlies. These
waves have built a wide, sandy beach fronted by an attached bar that
widens to the west. At low tide, it can be a 100m wade
before you can swim off the bar.
Bathing is
safest
at the western end, where the surf club patrols the beach and the bar is
relatively shallow. There are many rocks at the Pavillion end of the
beach and the holes off the end of the rock groyne are a danger to
non-swimmers.
Waves are generally only present during south-westerly winds and
waves.
Williamstown has a beach hazard rating of
2
/10
The Club The
Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club, formed in 1922, is located at
the western end next
to the baths. The Club is affiliated
with the Royal Life Saving Society and the Surf Life Saving
Association.
