Leading Australian trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith is tipping an awesome autumn for his stable’s very promising three-year-old, Lord Volksraad (by Volksraad).
Mayfield-Smith was delighted with the second placing recorded by Lord Volksraad in the Gr. 3 $A150,000 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

"I have said all along that he (Lord Volksraad) will be a much better horse in the autumn and anything he did this spring will be a bonus," Mayfield-Smith said.

"He was a late November foal, so I've taken him along quietly," Mayfield-Smith said.

"I told the owners when I bought him from the New Zealand sales that they would have to give him time to develop but that he would be worth the wait," he said.

The weekend’s race was Lord Volksraad’s second black-type placing this spring following his second in the Listed Concept Sports Stakes at Flemington early last month.

During the spring Lord Volksraad also posted wins at Geelong and Sandown.

Lord Volksraad will now be spelled and brought back for the autumn when the Gr. 1 Australian Guineas in Melbourne will be his chief target.
