The Saint Bernard Social Club of Tasmania inc.

The Saint Bernard Social Club of Tasmania Inc. is a small Club of Saint Bernard lovers.   It was formed in 1981.

Tasmania is the island state of Australia.   Lying off the south eastern tip of mainland Australia, we are somewhat isolated by Bass Strait.   An air trip takes about one hour from the State's capital, Hobart, in the south to the closest mainland city, Melbourne.   Two vehicular ferries provide daily crossings of Bass Strait from Devonport in the state's North-West coast to Melbourne. This is an overnight trip.

To find out more about our island state check out Tasmania Online.

Saint Bernards had been a regular feature at dog shows in the State in the late 1800's and early 1900's, but very few dogs were seen again until the late 1970's when breed numbers started to increase with stock coming from mainland Australia and England.   Owners found it difficult to get information regarding the rearing of this giant breed, and even Vets were finding it difficult due to their lack of experience with Saints.

With the formation of the Club members were able to pool their resources and distribute information from overseas and more experienced breeders on the Australian mainland, to owners and potential owners in our State.

As well as members in Tasmania we currently have a number of members from other Australian states, New Zealand and England.

The Club is a Social one, which means we are only associate affiliates of the state's controlling canine body, the Tasmanian Canine Association (TCA).   This means that we can not conduct our own shows.  However, we run other events such as Fun Days, where members can bring their dogs out for the day and meet other Saints and their slaves.

We run other social events for members such as barbecues and dinners.

The Club produces a quarterly magazine called "Saintences", in which we try to keep members informed of Club events as well and giving advice on general care, etc.

Even though we can't hold our own shows, we do conduct a pointscore competition each year for member's dogs competing at All Breeds championship shows.
