PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 1998/99 revealed some mixed achievements. After being grand finalist the previous season, the first eleven was expecting to at least be finalist again. But unfortunately losing rounds twelve and thirteen we missed the play offs. The loss of a senior player to district cricket ranks, and another returning home to England, probably left us that little bit short in the end.

Of concern to me was the fact we had several players seeking clearances to other clubs, this poses some interesting challenges for us in the future. We need to examine why such situations occur and make a special effort to prevent any re-occurrence in the future.

Unfortunately another negative issue to be addressed is the loss of our fourth eleven. After several rounds we were forced to withdraw the fourth eleven from the competition. In hindsight, this perhaps will not hinder the club, as we need the fourth eleven to be populated with young cricketers. Those that formed the nucleus of that side this season, certainly were not young players and did not have the best interests of the club at heart, so another challenge this coming season will be to rectify that situation.

On the positive, and there were many, we had success in having both our cricket wickets re-laid. The Moreland Council provided us with a new Sewell Reserve wicket and this we hope will lay a solid base for better wickets over the next couple of years.

Other good things to come out of the season was the social committee lead by Liz Dow with assistance from Eric Ruuska providing some excellent functions, beginning with the Grand Final day large screen TV being a huge success. I have already heard people discussing next years Grand Final day function. That day with the sportsman night and trivia night formed a great first half socially for the club. The introduction of the drink cards appears to have been a popular decision. The support of the Broadmeadows Sports Club has to be acknowledged. We held several BBQ and selection nights at the Broady club and everyone appears to enjoy the surroundings there.

On the playing side, I would like to congratulate Ian Hudson and David Lawson on reaching 100 first eleven games. We hope each can continue on to their next century of games with the club.

John Garfi deserves special praise, being his first year at the club. John stepped up to captain the second eleven and also coached the Hatch Shield squad. A special thanks also to George Denola for his efforts in captaining the third eleven. This is the most difficult of jobs with players always being pinched for duties at a higher level, and the withdrawal of the fourth eleven made George's job that much harder.

I would also like to thank Mick Streiff as chairman of selectors and Bill Lawson for his efforts as practice captain in marking out the ground each Saturday morning. Bill was also ably supported by Ray Cornish who also is our ever- reliable first eleven scorer. Also thanks go to Peter Dow for his efforts on the committee and especially in his role as maintenance co-ordinator.

To Mick Streiff our secretary and Bruce Sykes, a big thank you, especially following the difficult circumstances the club was left in from the previous year.

I would like to re-iterate Mick Streiff’s comments from this report the previous year. The club is at the crossroads, especially in terms of being able to field four elevens of the right mix that will make us successful and a lot of work and energy needs to be applied if we are to achieve our success at the club level. I seek your assistance in our efforts to recruit players at all levels. The only way we will achieve success on the recruiting side is with your assistance.

The direction of the club is quite clear in my mind, our financial viability whilst threatened the previous year has been returned, enabling the club to operate as close to being in the black as it has been for many years. The next priority item is for the establishment of juniors, and there is a sub-committee that is currently examining how best this will be achieved. Also the wickets at Sewell Reserve and Progress Reserve both require additional curation. This additional curation will only be achieved by the club allocating funds to that area, I seek your assistance in raising those funds so the quality of wickets at both venues may be returned to the highest possible standard for us to be competitive within the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.

Finally, Eric Ruuska must be congratulated on his winning performances of the Club Champion, First Eleven bowling, Club Player of the Year award, and most importantly for winning the Victorian Sub-District Cricket

Association R.M Hatch medal for the best player in the first eleven competition. A five vote winning margin was a sensational effort, with Eric being the first winner in the club's history. It was a privilege to be there on the night to experience the excitement (see next page) that unfolded. It was especially exciting to have a player win this award that has worked his way through club ranks. Well done Ecca, your name is now part of Victorian Sub District Cricket history and will be on display with other VSDCA cricketing greats.

Finally I shall not be re-nominating for the club Presidency, and I must say it was a privilege to have been your President for what has been a short time, but that's how things pan out sometimes. I wish all involved in the club the very best of success in the future.

SOCIAL REPORT

Well another social season has passed with another to look forward to. Last season was a huge success in terms of attendance and functions, however there is always room for improvement next year with better attendance.

Our first Grand Final Day was well attended and enjoyed by all present. If you missed it there is always this year coming. Our biggest success would have been our Trivia Night with plenty of laughs and entertainment. Who could forget the dress ups. The usual BBQs, Christmas Party and other nights were also well received.

The Sportsmans Night was well received by the few that were there and our special guests included Bill Lawry, Gary Honey, and Scott Wynd who all spoke at length about some of their exploits.

Lastly I would like to thank those who assisted me this year too numerous to mention but I must thank Eric Ruuska who was responsible for saving my sanity during the busy time of the year. We now have another season to look forward to, so see you all in October 99.

COACH’S REPORT

This year was full of expectation with the emphasis being put on the younger players to step up. I feel we succeeded to a degree in that many players had improved from the year before and with natural improvement many will play in higher elevens next season. Peter Pryor, Matthew Barwood, Travis Kemp, Bodie Royle, Wayne Dow, Ben Rose, Adam Browning and Leighton Weymouth are potential 1st eleven players and the club is expecting them to progress.

The highlight for the club was the win of Eric Ruuska of the RM Hatch medal. Eric has been a great role model this year on and off the field and hopefully his positive attitude and improved fitness will rub off on his peers.

The 1st eleven played 19 players this season, which gave many players a taste of Sub-District cricket 1sts. The 1st eleven had a reasonable year missing out on the finals by percentage. Obviously Eric's season was the highlight of the year.

The 2nd eleven had an average year on the ladder but I believe we unearthed some very good young players. John Garfi took over as captain and did a great job in difficult circumstances.

The 3rd eleven was ably led by George DeNola who did a good job as captain. The 3rds also produced some good players including Scott Waterman, Leighton Weymouth etc who will play higher next season.

I truly believe we have the core of players to help Broadmeadows Cricket Club be a force over the next few seasons.

I would like to thank Mick Streiff (Chairman of Selectors), Garry Nolan, John Garfi and George DeNola for their efforts during the year at training and match days.

I would also like to thank Bill Lawson for net captaincy and Peter Dow.

1st ELEVEN REPORT

After the successful year we had last year making the Grand Final, all players were looking forward to participating again. We lost Daniel Casteneda, Robert Goodwin and Chris Rowbottom and were looking for our established and younger players to take a step up and take on a more responsible role.

The 1st eleven were basically 3rd and 4th position all year until we lost the last 2 games against Ivanhoe and Preston. We missed the final four on percentage. Although this was very disappointing I feel there were many positives from the year.

The wicket was newly laid at Sewell Reserve and was the greenest and liveliest I had played on. In hindsight the wicket did not suit many of our players e.g. our two spinners, but as we know as cricketers we have to play in all conditions. Testament to this was the fact we played 19 different players in the firsts, trying to find the right combination. This was a great chance to have a look at the guys from the 2nds and many performed well. It was very frustrating from a batting perspective for many of our players but in this situation you just have to fight as hard as you can and when you get in and set don’t get out because it is so much harder for the new batsman coming in.

Obviously the highlight of the year was the form of Eric Ruuska with bat and ball. Eric was definitely a lot physically fitter this year and took on a lot more responsibility on and off the field, which definitely helped his game. It was a tremendous effort to be the first Broadmeadows player to win the Hatch medal, one he very much deserved. I certainly hope the other players at the club follow Eric's lead and get themselves fitter to help the club and themselves go one step better.

Pacco was great support for Eric and bowled consistently all year. Balwyn was a great game for Pacco bagging 7/24. As I said it was hard for our two spinners but they toiled all year in conditions that didn't suit.

Our batting was very inconsistent but I really feel this was one year out of the box and quality players like John Forder, David Lawson and Andrew Bonaguro will improve next season. David Lawson did another great job behind the stumps.

As I said we have given many players a sniff of what Sub-District 1sts is like and we really need these younger players to take a step up. Guys like Travis Kemp, John Garfi, Ben Rose, Wayne Dow, Bodie Royle and Adam Browning must grab opportunities with both hands and keep the pressure on the other players to perform.

I would like to thank Bill Lawson for marking the wickets and being there every week to support the players. I am sure even though some players give Bill a hard time they really appreciate all the time he puts in at the club. People like Bill are hard to find at clubs like ours. I wish some of the players had Bill's passion for the club.

Thanks to Garry Nolan, Mick Streiff, Peter Dow, Bruce Sykes and especially Rainman who did a great job again as scorer and team manager. Thank you also to the ladies who helped with the afternoon tea.

Let's make next season something special, whether you are a player, committee member or a helper, we need that little bit extra.

Time is running out!

2nd ELEVEN REPORT

When approached by Gary Nolan to take over the role as Captain for the 2nd XI, words could not express how honored, privileged and happy I felt. The truth is I was stunned that my name came to mind. In only my first year with the club I was given the opportunity to do something that I have always wanted to do.

Not having had any experience in such a position I knew that the task was going to be challenging. A combination of youth and inexperience were obstacles that needed overcoming. So I sat down with the boys and voiced my thoughts and feelings. Yes I was the captain but I was still one of the boys, and we were going to face challenges, but with the support and encouragement from each other we would tackle them as a team and have fun together.

Having this support from the guys, especially when some were older than me made my job so much easier. There were always words of encouragement, which were gratefully accepted. I knew that I was going to make mistakes but tried to keep them to a minimum. I felt proud that the boys could approach me with suggestions or give pointers when things weren’t quite right.

We may not have won many games, but it was great to see some fine cricket played over the summer. Seeing the youth of tomorrow standing tall and giving all were highlights for me during the season. The likes of Peter Pryor, Matthew Barwood and Bodie Royle are all positive young players coming up through the ranks. Whenever they were called upon they gave their all. There can only be promising times ahead for these guys.

Over the course of the season I also had the privilege of playing cricket with some great senior players, Rod Browning, Paul Bosanko and Grant Joyner, who were great support for me. It was great to be able to approach them if I wasn’t sure of something or just wanted to run an idea past them.

Throughout the season, I felt as a team we were not compiling enough runs to win games and it was left to too few to make the runs. Although we had a settled first five comprising of some real talent, unfortunately there were never big enough partnerships made to relieve the pressure on the lower order. But we can all learn from our experiences out in the middle and I believe we will all be better players for it. It was great to see players like Wayne Dow and Ben Rose who worked hard all year to be rewarded with games in the first XI.

I hope next season all these guys are still playing cricket, a foundation has been laid and now we must build on it. If we can get the core group happening again and pledge our support to one another and to the club we can only move forward. It doesn’t matter that we’re not Don Bradmans or Dennis Lillies, so long as we enjoy ourselves when we’re out there giving 100%.

In closing I wish to thank everyone at the Broadmeadows Sub District Cricket Club, especially for making me feel welcome and giving me the opportunity to captain and play cricket. To the committee thank you, you made me aware of all the things that need to be done behind the scenes. I now appreciate the time and effort it requires to run a club. It really has been most enjoyable playing cricket with the Broady boys. We’re all right !!!!

3rd ELEVEN REPORT

The 3rd eleven had an unsettled side throughout the year with many players being turned over, turning up 10 minutes before play, some leaving immediately before the resumption of the second day’s play or players not turning up at all. These problems were further compounded by the withdrawal of the 4th eleven, all resultant of the lack of commitment from players at the club. It was left to Paul Bosanko to comment on this for me during the presentation dinner and I hope these problems are obvious to others around the club. To say the least these problems need to be dealt with prior to next season.

A promising aspect of the past season was the application of the some of the younger players involved with the third eleven this year. With the lack of 2nd eleven players at the club they were given opportunities earlier than expected and all performed admirably. Players such as Leighton Weymouth and Matthew Barwood worked hard through the year returning good results and Bodie Royle was rewarded with a first eleven game. To see these younger players doing well in the higher elevens after progressing from the third eleven was a source of satisfaction. This progression is positive for the club and I expect to see Nick Olney, Harry Mason and Scott Waterman follow suit. Nick is a player to watch in coming years as this year he felt his way around the club and I feel he will mature into a fine bowler.

I would like to thank Paul "Nobby" Bosanko, John Dick and Vince Daspromonte for their assistance with the 3rd eleven in season 98/99. Nobby himself had a very good season winning both the batting and bowling averages with aggregates of 20.86 and 7.13 respectively. There were memorable moments during the season such as the light-hearted comedy relief supplied from our beloved secretary Mick Streiff, his running between the wickets compared to a rabbit on speed. Lets not forget Darren Laurien who played with a radio in his pocket listening to the races only to claim it was the umpires when caught. Apologies to Jamie Rowan, Matthew Barwood, John Dick and others who I made do sprints in warm up (each on separate occasions, you would think someone would cotton on) as the rest of us followed mockingly. Lets not mention the head butting incident. Also, thanks to people such as Peter Pryor Snr for filling in on short notice.

On the political side, for the Broadmeadows Cricket Club to remain a separate entity (ie: no merger), a number of issues need to be tackled quickly. Firstly, much has been said about the lack of players around the club but this real issue revolves around keeping younger players at the club. To do this we have to satisfy their needs by increasing attention to them on the training track. Senior players around the club with experience (ie: 1st eleven players) should take on this responsibility during training sessions and give a constant flow of advice regarding technique, how to train and hence how to play the game. The senior players should benefit as this will make them think about the basics. An example of this is Eric Ruuska, who has helped many of the young bowlers doing well at the moment, hence congratulations for your hard work. Secondly, Garry Nolan tackled the thankless task of the President this year and although I felt he did a great job it needs to be said that he did not, from my perspective, receive the support he required. The club needs a president like Garry to steer the club in the right direction but it also needs all of our support, this may require biting one’s lip and putting personal issues aside. Keep Garry at the top and support him.

4th ELEVEN REPORT

The 4th eleven was withdrawn from the competition after round 6 when it became apparent that we would struggle to have sufficient numbers to fill the side. Out of the 4 possible games, we forfeited twice which is not a good reflection on our club or the Sub District Association.

Every endeavour will be made to establish a fourth eleven next year and we seek your assistance in getting people to the club who are keen to play and be part of the club by paying membership.

HATCH SHIELD REPORT

Having to spend two weeks with 13 and 14 year olds may not seem the most therapeutic way to pass the time, but for me it was a pleasure.

When I volunteered to the coach the hatch boys for season '99 I didn’t quite comprehend what was going to be involved. 8 weeks before the actual tournament started Norm Goodwin and I spent Sunday mornings looking at and analyzing the kids that would make the team. It didn’t get off to a great start with only 8 kids arriving for the first training session, but as the weeks went on we came across some great kids not only from the local area but from country Victoria as well.

We trimmed the squad to 16 and many people thought I was silly to pick such a large number of kids. I wanted to give most of the kids a go and I think that the exercise worked well with many of the boys rising to the occasion. The level of commitment from the boys was fantastic and they all bonded really well. Having to choose a captain was made easy. A young chap by the name of Justin Phillips with great all round skills was a fine choice for all including his peers. Not having won a game throughout the competition was not a major disappointment for me. Just seeing the boys support one another and do their best was all that I could ask for.

I must give many thanks to Norm Goodwin. He has had a lot of experience with kids in the Dowling Shield competition and his observations and opinions were most appreciated. It was great to see the level of commitment from all of the parents and I would like to thank them for making my job a little easier. Some parents in particular that I want to thank are, Bernadette Cross, who scored for the competition even when her son wasn’t playing, James Briggs, Steve Cooper, Paul Rossitto and Chris Cole, who were all a great support in organizing drinks and things for the boys.

In the course of the two weeks I saw some great cricket and not just from our boys. It excites me to know that 5 or 6 of the boys want to play at Broady next season in the lower grades to get some experience playing on turf wickets. As a club we must embrace these kids and give them the time they need. We must pull together and make them feel welcome when they arrive for pre-season training.

A junior development program is in the process of being put together, and will include Norm Goodwin, Eric Ruuska, Mick Streiff and myself. We aim to encourage juniors to the club. It will take a lot of hard work to make it happen but there are exciting times ahead.

In conclusion, there were some great positives over the competition, Justin Phillips, Brett Cole and Blair McCormick with their all round performances and kids such as Nayan Sharma, Nathan Briggs and Kane Dockery who all did well with the ball. These are kids who have great cricketing futures ahead of them. I wish ALL the Hatch boys well and continued success with their cricket. I hope to see some of them at the club, and for the club to welcome them and show them why they should play at Broady.
