PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 1999-2000 started off on a positive note with the club being able to fill 4 sides for the entire season. This was capped off by the efforts of Mick Streiff and Norm Goodwin successfully getting the clubs first junior team up and running for the first time in many years. I hope we can build on this next season and beyond so that we could have under 10's through to 16's and reap the rewards of Mick and Norm's efforts in having some of these kids representing the club at senior level.

Unfortunately the season ended without any of the 4 sides making the finals, but on a positive note was the form of the 4th eleven after Christmas. Led by Mick Streiff and Garry Bollard the boys not only put a few wins on the board, they were also competitive with sides that played off in the finals. Next season we hope to see a few of the young blokes playing in the higher elevens and contributing a bit of their enthusiasm to those elevens in getting a few wins on the board.

I would like to congratulate 2 great clubmen on reaching personal milestones this season. Firstly John Forder on breaking Ron Giles' record of most 1st eleven games and Garry Nolan in playing 200 2nd eleven games. We look forward to you both adding to those records next season.

John Garfi once again took on the Hatch Shield coaching and with assistance from John Forder and James Bader they achieved the best result the club has had for many years. After some pre-season planning and numerous training sessions the boys just missed out on the finals. All those involved - coaches, players and parents should be congratulated on a job well done.

I would like to thank the captains and coaches for their time and effort this season. It was disappointing that you were not rewarded with sides competing in the finals but hopefully we can work together next season in striving for the ultimate goal of winning the grand final in all elevens.

Mark Leehane has informed the club that he will not be coaching next season. I would like to thank Mark for doing a sensational job in coaching our club over the past 4 years. Mark is one of the most respected players in the competition and we have been fortunate to have him on our side. Mark's record speaks for itself. He has represented our club in many sub-district games, coached our club to its first grand final and won the 1st eleven batting six out of seven times. While we have lost Mark as coach next season he will stay on as a valued player for the coming season and I'm sure he will have a big impact on the clubs performance next season. Thank you Mark.

I would like to thank the committee for a job well done throughout the year. While it takes a lot of time and commitment from the committee to help run the club there are many other people that must be thanked. Firstly all the ladies who donated their time in preparing the afternoon teas and helping out in the kitchen with the social functions. Bill Lawson for assisting the coaches as practice captain and helping out on game days, from marking wickets to organising the drinks. Ray Cornish for scoring, marking wickets, looking after the covers and supplying the boys with mars bars on game day. Finally to all the players, members and supporters of the Broadmeadows Cricket Club for their support throughout the year.

I look forward to seeing everybody back next season so as we can work together in making the club a real force in the competition both on and off the field.

SOCIAL REPORT

Organising a social calendar and "making functions happen" requires time commitment and a lot of stress but it all becomes worthwhile when the function is a success. At Broady this year there were several of those rewarding nights for me personally.

The John Forder tribute night was right up there as a memorable night in the history of the club (as anyone present could vouch for on my behalf). Some of the details are still a bit fuzzy.

Presentation night was fantastic. It just goes to show that we can have a good night in "the dungeon".

Music trivia night had its doubters but again was a fun night.

Grand final day, while not a huge success, still has potential as being one of the most valuable functions of the social calendar. It will generate income (money to run the club) and is a good reason for EVERYONE at the club to be together at one function to kick the year off.

Thanks to all those who helped me throughout the year.

Support your club, attend functions, and if you have any ideas for functions they would be greatly appreciated.

Snakes in long grass.

COACH’S REPORT

This year was a disappointing season for the club with none of the elevens making the finals. Probably the highlight was the good effort by our 4th eleven and Mick Streiff to blood some good young players and near the end of the season get some great wins. This is the way the club must go and bring as many young kids into the club as possible.

John Forder did a great job coaching the juniors and mainly concentrating on the younger players. Eric Ruuska also helped out coaching the younger guys.

John Dick and Ian Hudson did a great job under difficult circumstances in their respective elevens.

I believe we as a club are at the crossroads. Each player must look at themselves and decide if they want to play sub-district cricket and at Broadmeadows. If they do, give it 100%.

Thanks to David Lawson, Mick Streiff, Bruce Sykes and the rest of the committee for their continued support.

Thanks to Bill Lawson for being Bill.

Let's turn things around. Everyone must give 100% right through the club.

1st ELEVEN REPORT

The expectations last year were high with the return of experienced players Daniel Castaneda and Cameron Henderson. Unfortunately the year did not turn out as expected. The 1st eleven really struggled to put two wins together at any stage of the year. We bowled and fielded fairly well all season but our batting never really hit its straps.

Andrew Bonaguro had a great start to the season and up until Christmas was most consistent and very important as an opening bat in holding our side together in many games. After Christmas his scores were not as consistent but I feel he took a big step to realise he should be a regular in the 1st eleven.

David Lawson had a very good season both batting and behind the stumps and scored a great hundred against Coburg.

Cameron Henderson started slowly but once he got used to the wickets made some good scores. He should be a good player for Broadmeadows in the years to come.

Eric Ruuska had an interrupted year due to injury. It was a big blow to lose Eric for most of the year and hopefully his body can come up next season.

Pas Sciulli won the bowling average and did a great job all season mainly bowling into the wind. With Daniel and Eric missing games, Pas had to hold our pace attack together in a lot of games. It was great to see him win the bowling award.

Geoff Turner again put in a good season. Geoff is one constant you can always rely on and you know when he has the ball the other side will struggle to score.

Steve Goodwin started slowly but as always was very dangerous after Christmas. Steve has a great talent and now is the time for Steve to cash in and get everything out of himself.

Peter Pryor played the last 4 games in the 1st eleven. Peter has a great attitude and hopefully can come on this year as well as other young players we played such as James Murphy, Wayne Dow and Bodie Royle.

Thanks to Ray Cornish for scoring, Bill Lawson and those who helped with the afternoon teas.

2nd ELEVEN REPORT

With the unavailability of John Garfi due to work and Hatch shield duties, I was asked to take on the role as second XI captain.

With a blend of experienced players and a group of young talent, the outlook for the season was for a successful one. We were unable to establish a consistent XI all year with over 20 players coming in and out of the side. With only 2 wins for the season we fell well short of expectations. Although we had a disappointing season there were some good individual performances with both bat and ball.

Jamie Rowan’s innings against Coburg where he batted through to win our first game was sensational, and one of the best innings I have been involved with. With more commitment I believe Jamie could turn 20’s into 70’s on a regular basis.

There was never a dull moment when Rosie had the ball in his hand, he gave 100% at all times and when the runs were flowing Ben put on the brakes. I hope next season Rosie can perform as well with the bat and become a great all rounder.

With the loss of bowlers i.e. Travis Kemp, Lindsay Patullo and Leighton Weymouth, our younger players in Peter Pryor, James Murphy, Matt Barwood and Bodie Royle got the chance to ply their trade at Sub-District level. To have John Forder, Garry Nolan and Ron Giles playing under me was a great thrill, and the win against Endeavour Hills on Garry’s 200th game milestone in the 2nd XI was a feeling I will never forget.

Peter Pryor has the ability to become a great all rounder; his consistency in the middle order was rewarded with senior selection. James Murphy and Bodie Royle also played a handful of games in the 1st XI. With more consistency in line and length these two bowlers along with Matt Barwood are the future opening bowlers of the firsts.

Wayne Dow played a couple of gutsy knocks throughout the year and in tough conditions he seemed to excel. Hopefully next season he can once again push for senior selection.

Adam Browning had a frustrating year and if he can learn to play straighter, will make a lot more runs.

Dean Gazelle took on the keeping role and did a serviceable job. With more glove work at training, Dean will become a regular in the 2nd XI. Dean was solid with the bat and was involved in some lower order partnerships, which could see him rise up the order.

Leg spinner Sam Ratnatunga was a great injection into the 2nd XI. I hope Sam can continue at the club as I feel he could get plenty of wickets at this level.

Frank Burns had limited opportunities and proved he could play at this standard. Frank’s performance against Coburg showed great persistence in breaking a partnership, which probably won us the game. With Frank and Sam working in tandem they could form a great partnership.

I would like to congratulate Garry Nolan on his 200th game for the 2nd XI, his dedication to the club both on and off the field is inspirational. I hope that Garry fronts up again next season, as his experience to the top order is invaluable.

Personally I would like to thank Sam Ratnatunga for fixing my back as his treatment got me through a tough yet enjoyable year.

Thanks also to John Forder for his support throughout the year and to Mark Leehane and the committee for giving me the opportunity to captain the 2nd XI.

Thanks to the ladies for the sensational afternoon teas.

Special thanks to Bruce Sykes and Peter Dow for scoring throughout the season.

3rd ELEVEN REPORT

Season 1999/2000 was a shocker for the 3rd XI. We had only one victory all year with 11 losses and 1 washout. Our win was in Rd 2 against Sunshine mainly due to the services of Robert Goodwin with an outstanding knock of 87 not out and a 5-wicket haul by Lindsay Patullo.

The team however did show tremendous spirit under enormous pressure throughout the season in which we were undermanned on numerous occasions.

Our bowling attack was always honest and hard working, however we lacked a bit of firepower and LUCK that is needed to take top order wickets.

The fielding was fairly good all season as the players rarely lost concentration and the talk amongst the players was encouraging. Special mention in the field must go to Ang Anthakis whom was responsible for many classic catches and numerous run outs.

Our batting was rather disappointing, as we weren’t able to maintain scoreboard pressure. Our top order did try their best with not much luck as our opposition all year seemed to make the most of their opportunities with minimal dropped catches. Our lower order didn’t offer much resistance and collapses were frequent.

Due to a general lack of depth it was a struggle to form a stable team, especially with a turnover of 28 different players. As we had a few part time players and an average of 4 to 5 players turn up to training it was hard to bond as a unit.

The positives of our season lay with the juniors who played a few games towards the end of season. Nayan Sharma arrived and showed correct technique with his batting and was able to bat time. I think with more experience and hard work he will be playing at a higher level on a regular basis. Justin Philips displayed great all round ability, especially with his fielding, and next year with more hard work and confidence I feel his batting and bowling will improve out of sight. Ashley Powell, Chris Ryan and Jarryd Browne also showed some potential.

I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to captain the 3rd XI as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also I would like to thank all the ladies who provided our afternoon teas for the home games, as we seem to have set the standard in this area.

4th ELEVEN REPORT

In taking on the captaincy of the fourth eleven at the start of the season, I was not sure how we would go. After not fielding a side the previous season, finding numbers was always going to be a problem at the start of the year. In the first match of the season against Sunshine we had only eight players, with three of these players being from the Hatch Shield training squad. Although beaten we batted our 40 overs and showed some real commitment which was very encouraging from a club point of view.

The pre season planning by the junior development committee and the decision to rotate Hatch Shield players was instrumental in the club fielding a side from week to week. The decision allowed us to play some 14 boys, giving them the opportunity to play on turf and help them prepare for the Hatch competition.

In the first half of the season we did not win a game but there was some encouraging signs and good performances from players such as Justin Phillips, Ashley Powell, Jarryd Browne and Chris Ryan. These players all went on to play in the third eleven late in the season. There were also some good performances from Hatch boys Lucas Elliott, Nathan Briggs, Michael Staples and Gavin Scicluna.

After Christmas the team won three games and also had the subsequent premiers Yarraville on the ropes before being washed out in the second week. During this time Altona who went on to play in the grand final also narrowly defeated us. The improved performances could be put down to the boys having a bit more experience and more confidence in each other and the addition of a couple of senior players.

There are a number of people who I would like to thank. Firstly Garry Bollard, who came out of retirement to assist me with this very young side, was fantastic with his enthusiasm, encouragement and advice to the boys. He also performed very well and did a great job each week including assisting with field placements and offering advice. Garry bought new cricket boots with a couple of games to go so I hope he can stay in one piece to again assist me next season.

I would also like to thank my support cast for their assistance throughout the season. Glenda in preparing afternoon teas, James at square leg, Garry as team manager and scorer, John and Mark who also assisted with the scoring at times. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and makes my job that much easier, allowing me to concentrate more on the playing side and the team.

In concluding I would like to congratulate Michael DeCruze on winning the bowling average. Michael along with many of the other young players showed great improvement as the season progressed and became a very reliable player. I would also like to thank all the players who played during the year for their support. I'm sure that next season if the boys continue to show improvement and train hard, then we will have success and develop players for our higher elevens.

HATCH SHIELD REPORT

The season started early this year, things had to change! Broadmeadows did not win a game the season before, so the only way to go forward was to train harder!

Both James Bader (Team Manager) and myself started planning a lot earlier this season; we had made a promise to give the squad every opportunity to succeed in this year’s tournament. If that meant getting out of bed earlier or putting on extra training sessions then so be it; we were out to make a difference for last years effort.

Compared to the season of 1998/99 there were a total of 21 extra training sessions, including 3 practice matches. During these training sessions there where many people that helped me in one way or another. To both James and John Forder I thank them for being there with the kids when I was not able to, and for going the extra yard when others may have not.

As always the selection criteria was made very difficult, there was a selection of kids that all deserved to make the squad. Tough decisions had to be made and I believe that we chose a very strong and competitive squad. They ranged from local kids around Broadmeadows and kids as far away as Bendigo. Some times I had to remind myself that these boys were only 12, 13 & 14 years of age, they may be young but over the course of the tournament they showed a lot of character, poise, commitment and not to mention maturity. Having to choose a captain was made easy. A young chap by the name of Blair McCormick with great all round skills was a fine choice for all including his peers.

The squad was Blair McCormick (C), Lucas Elliott (VC), Burt Faraj, Gavin Scicluna, Jarryd Stirling, John Hand, Marcus Carroll, Mathew O’Meara, Mathew Costello, Michael Cassinides, Michael Staples, Nathan Briggs, Steven Cohen and Terrence Dixon.

Winning a total of 3 and a half games was truly fantastic; wins against Coburg, Ivanhoe, Brunswick and a draw against Kew had us in a position where we could have been playing finals. Unfortunately the game against Kew was a washout. Yes a washout, on a stinking hot 38-degree day the sprinklers came on during the game and flooded the pitch area. The game was in the balance; we had them 7/94 with three overs to go. We will never know the true result but it could have been the difference between playing finals or not. The final game against Balwyn was an absolute ripper. If we beat them we finish first and playing in the finals, if we lose we finish third and miss out by half a game in playing finals. As it turned out we fell short by 18 runs, but we showed great character and fight and took it right to the end.

Everyone who was involved with the team, including the parents, were so proud of the boys. They are all fantastic cricketers and if they put their minds to it they can all take their cricket to the next level.

In the course of the two weeks I saw some great cricket and not just from our boys. It excites me to know that 5 or 6 of the boys want to play at Broady next season in the lower grades to get some experience playing on turf wickets. As a club we must embrace these kids and give them the time they need. We must pull together and make them feel welcome when they arrive for pre-season training.

In final, there were some great positives over the competition, Lucas Elliott, Mathew O'Meara and Blair McCormick with their all round performances and kids such as John Hand, Nathan Briggs, Gavin Scicluna and Burt Faraj who all did well with the ball. These are kids who have great cricketing futures ahead of them. I wish ALL the Hatch boys well and continued success with their cricket. I hope to see some of them at the club, and for the club to welcome them and show them why they should play at Broady.

JOHN GARFI
