PRESIDENTS REPORT

Unfortunately the season ended without any sides making the finals. The positive part of the season was the form of some of the junior players pushing up into the higher elevens. It is vital for the club to keep these players so they can consolidate their positions in the higher elevens and help the club take the next step into playing finals cricket.

I would like to thank Eric Ruuska for coaching our club this season. A difficult job only made harder because of the lack of commitment of many people towards attending training. I believe that this is the main reason for the poor performances on the field and until people are prepared to give 100% to the club, teammates and the coach, we will continue to finish at the bottom end of the ladder.

It was good to see people making good use of the bowling machine that the club purchased this season. A good tool for fine tuning your batting skills. The storage container and covers trolley made life easier this season and I would like to thank Peter Dow, John Robb and James Bader for their work in that area.

I would like to thank John Garfi and James Bader for taking on the Hatch Shield again this season. Unfortunately the boys missed out on the finals again. Better luck next season.

I would like to thank the committee for a job well done throughout the year. Thanks to Karen Dick and Sue Hudson for taking on the thankless task of organising social functions, Liz Dow for cooking after training nights, Karen Dick, Sue Hudson, Liz Dow and Glenda Streiff for making the afternoon teas, Bill Lawson and Ray Cornish for all their work around the club. Thanks also to Mick Streiff who is standing down as secretary. Mick has done a fantastic job over the last couple of years and it will be difficult to find somebody with Mick's dedication and commitment to fill this position. Thank you Mick.

SECRETARY'S APPRECIATION

I would like to thank President David Lawson, Treasurer Bruce Sykes and the committee for their work not only last year, but over the past few years in getting the club back on a strong financial footing. With good budgeting and the financial support of our major sponsor the Broadmeadows Sporting Club our club can look forward to continued improvements around the club such as this years purchase of the bowling machine and storage container.

VSDCA

Congratulations to Williamstown for winning the championship final in the first eleven and to all other teams in their respective grand final victories. With a wet finals series it just shows the importance of finishing as high as possible.

AFTERNOON TEAS / SOCIAL

I would like to thank Glenda Streiff, Sue Hudson, Karen Dick and Liz Dow who prepared the afternoon teas.

PRACTICE CAPTAIN

Thanks to Bill Lawson for the good job you did again this season and Ray Cornish when needed. Bill and Ray also marked the wickets on match days. We appreciate your time and effort.

COVERS

Thanks to Ray Cornish and all the players who assisted with the covers during the season.

CLEANING

Thanks to Janet Falkingham for cleaning the rooms every week and making them look respectable on match days.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

Thanks to Norm Goodwin for his work with the under 10's during the season. Thanks also to John Garfi and James Bader for the way they organised the Hatch Shield program and giving their time. The efforts of Norm, John and James go a long way in promoting the club for the future. We look forward to fielding under 10's & 12's next season.

MORELAND COUNCIL

The problems associated with the wicket this season are well documented and the club can only continue to liaise with council officers to ensure that we get the best possible results both on match days and at training.

HUME COUNCIL

Thank you for allocating funds to laser level the wicket table at the start of the year and the re-laying of 2 new wickets. This will go a long way in the continuation of the improvement of the standard of wickets. We hope that next season the problems with the automatic sprinkler system can be avoided.

SOCIAL REPORT

The social club had a good result this season. The highlight of the season was The Best Team dinner, with over 60 people attending. There were many past players in attendance, which was great to see. Even though it was an extremely hot evening everyone enjoyed themselves and enjoyed the meal.

The Car Boot Sale was a disappointing event, due to lack of people in attendance. However we did raise money due to the raffle and stallholders. Thanks to all who helped on the day.

The other functions at the club where attended by the usual group of players and families, which was a disappointment. Something needs to be done to encourage more of the younger players to attend. Maybe we should have a BBQ on a Sunday afternoon so it is easier for those players who need rides to attend and bring their families.

We would like to thank all the ladies that helped throughout the year, especially Liz and Leanne who were always on hand to help with the dishes. Without the help of all the ladies it would be very difficult to hold functions at the club.

COACH'S REPORT

Season 2000-2001 was a very disappointing one for the Broadmeadows Cricket Club. There was little success on the field with the senior XI, despite a promising start, managing only 3 wins for the year and the club as a whole not many more.

An ongoing problem for the club is a lack of players and player depth. Pre-season, as has been the case in recent years was quite positive with over 60 players in training. However, come the season proper, the club is always searching for those extra players to make up the numbers. Players at the club need to realise the commitment required playing at sub-district level. Player depth is one key area that the club must address to become successful. I believe that a dedicated recruitment officer is required to liaise with and entice potential players.

Whilst there wasn't the success on the field that we all hoped for, the season still provided many positives. In the senior XI, Peter Haydon proved himself as one of the premier batsmen in the competition, in only his first season at this level. Congratulations Peter on your selection in the "subbie" team of the year - well deserved. Steve Goodwin enhanced his reputation as the competitions best spin bowler with a stellar year. The 2nd XI saw the great man, Ron Giles score his first century, fantastic achievement Ronnie. Ben Rose continues to develop with the ball and only needs to get some of the aggression and self-belief of his bowling into his batting to be a consistent 1st XI all rounder. The 3rd XI had a very long season, often playing short of players. The 4th XI was competitive in most matches. Mick Streiff along with Garry Bollard do a fantastic job in teaching the young boys the way the game should be played. The club can only benefit in years to come through their efforts.

The club is now in a position where a number of Hatch players, past and present, are playing in the senior sides. In order to ensure these boys continue playing with the club, I believe that there needs to be a change of attitude around the club. For too long, the club has accepted mediocrity. I firmly believe that both on and off the field the club is very good at making excuses. To be successful, the club must win, to win you must expect to win, to expect to win you don't make excuses and don't accept mediocrity. It is time to change the culture of the place - expect to win and believe in each other. On and off the field, too much is left to too few. It's up to everybody committee to supporters.

I was honored to be appointed coach of the Broadmeadows Cricket Club and would like to thank the club for the opportunity. It certainly proved to be a great learning experience. In the future, I hope that the club appoints a single captain/coach or a non-playing coach. Having a separate playing coach and captain leads to confusion. The setup wasn't successful and has been tried and failed in the past. I hope the club doesn't follow that path in the future.

In concluding, I would like to thank David Lawson for his support. David is an extraordinary clubman and was a very good leader of the side. James Bader was of great support throughout the year. I would like to thank James and John Garfi for the roles they performed with the Hatch squad. Bill Lawson as usual ensured that the nets ran smoothly at training, so thanks Billy - now can I pad up? The captains of the other XI's - Garry Nolan, Ang Anthakis / John Dick and Mick Streiff - all a big thank you for your support. I would also like to congratulate all of the players selected in the club's team of the century. Thanks for the opportunity Broady.

1st ELEVEN REPORT

Once again we had another year that could have been. After 5 rounds with 3 wins and 2 draws due to washouts, we were sitting in a good position. Unfortunately from then on we lost 7 of the last 8 games. The most disappointing thing was that in 4 of the losing games we controlled 90% of the games. We just seemed to find a way to lose either by losing 3 or 4 wickets, bad bowling or by dropping vital catches. I feel we had the side to make the finals but we lacked the killer instinct to put sides away when we had them on the ropes.

Peter Haydon with 470 runs and Mark Leehane with 420 runs were the backbone of our batting and congratulations to Peter for making the Sub-District Team of the Year. Steve Goodwin had a great year with the ball taking 37 wickets supported by Geoff Turner with 21. Eric Ruuska who made 300 runs and took 16 wickets again had another good year and at times bowled with no luck and could have easily had more wickets.

I would like to thank Ray Cornish for scoring and Bill Lawson and Ray for marking the wickets before the games.

2nd ELEVEN REPORT

After a pre-season that held so much promise, the selection committee meeting prior to round one deflated much of the pre-season optimism, as there was a shortage of players to fill four sides. A subsequent phone around enabled us to locate several players, namely John Forder, Ron Giles, Jamie Rowan and Lindsay Patullo, who all agreed to take the field in round one to ease the problem. My thanks go out to each of you for your support, as none of you had done any pre-season training.

Given the player shortage there are no secrets about the direction the second eleven needed to take, that being of encouraging and supporting the younger players at second eleven level, a situation that was always going to be challenging for all concerned.

It was certainly pleasing to see that our young bowling attack generally kept the opposition under some form of pressure, as with the high youth component, things could have easily got out of hand. The bowling attack of Steve Afflitto, Nayan Sharma and Michael Staples showed tremendous application for young teenagers. They were well supported by Ben Rose, Lindsay Patullo, James Murphy, Sam Ratnatunga and Ron Giles.

It was a more difficult situation with the batting, with the top order struggling on many occasions, although Nayan Sharma, Ashley Powell, Dean Gazelle and Steve Afflitto all showed glimpses of promise. This goes well for their batting futures.

My congratulations to Scott Waterman for the form he showed in the second eleven. This was rewarded with games in the first eleven.

Another to show terrific improvement was Dean Gazelle as wicket-keeper/batsman. On several occasions Deano was asked to open the batting and showed he has the ability to develop into a top order batter. Also by the end of the season Deano's keeping was also of a standard well above his early form.

Others to show outstanding ability were Justin Phillips early with his bowling, and Jarryd Browne's batting late in the season. Hopefully both Justin and Jarryd will be jumping out of their skin to tackle second eleven cricket next season.

There were several excellent performances that require acknowledging. Firstly, Ang Anthakis hat-trick against Noble Park and Ron Giles century against Brunswick were outstanding, as was Ben Rose with his slow medium pacers over the entire course of the season. Hopefully "Rosie" will get the opportunity with the ball in the first eleven next season as his accuracy and competitiveness needs to be acknowledged.

In summarising the season, I was delighted to be asked to captain the second eleven, although I must admit my primary goal from early in the season was to develop players rather than win games. The shortage of players within the club dictated this approach, an approach I believe will need to be continued next season, as well as showing some patience with the younger brigade.

Special thanks to Ron Giles and John Forder for stepping in as captain when required and to our coach Eric Ruuska for his support. Also thanks to Gary Staples, Matthew Afflitto and Bruce Sykes for your support with scoring and team management. Also a special thank you to the ladies that supported and provided afternoon teas for the players.

Hopefully the club can resolve the coaching situation shortly and then quickly focus on the youngsters in the off season that showed so much promise in the season just gone, as our future rests squarely with these youngsters.

3rd ELEVEN REPORT

Season 2000/2001 for the 3rd Eleven was once again a bad year. With no wins and a lack of players and availability, it was a real concern.

Moral was really low, after not winning a game since round 2 last year. The injury to captain, John Dick mid way through the season was also a blow for the team.

Our bowling attack was very limited, and struggled to make an impact on other teams. However, persistence and hard work really showed in the later part of the year, where the 3rd's really displayed some fight and demonstrated they weren't just a push over side, and surprised a couple of teams in the process.

Hopefully this fighting attitude will be taken into next year, where we can turn these performances around.

4th ELEVEN REPORT

The fourth eleven did not have a successful season if you look at our ladder finish with only two wins for the year. However the side was very competitive and in most games we batted out our overs and bowled reasonably tightly.

The makeup of the side was completely different to the previous season with most of the young players playing in higher elevens. This was pleasing as I see my role as fourth eleven captain as not necessarily winning matches but developing players for the clubs future.

The season started with the club losing a number of senior players due to various reasons, which meant that at times some players had to play in higher elevens to help make up the numbers. I thank these players for making themselves available even though I know they were better suited to the fourth eleven and preferred to play fourths.

The club continued with its rotation policy of Hatch Shield players with ten boys playing fourth eleven cricket during the year. This along with four players from Bruce Gardner's under 15's at Hoppers Crossing ensured that we were able to field eleven players from week to week. I thank John Garfi and James Bader for their assistance and support with the Hatch boys and Bruce for his ability to provide players.

The highlights of the season were our two wins over Altona and Ivanhoe, both of which were by strong margins. In the one day game at Altona after making a competitive score of 6/126 we bowled out Altona for 55 with all bowlers bowling well and supported in the field with some very good catching and run outs. The Ivanhoe game was a personal highlight for myself making 119no, my first century and combining with Will Partington-Gardner 145no for a club record partnership of 268 unfinished. Will's innings over 48 overs was sensational, he played most shots in the book and he certainly has the ability to go on next year to higher elevens.

The side had a number of players playing on turf for the first time and as the year progressed there were encouraging signs from players such as Dean Turner, Sean Cornish, Ben Robertson, Greg Shaw and Brad Turner. I'm sure with this experience under their belts they will become better and more consistent players next season.

Hatch Shield boys who played with the team on a number of occasions were Terrence Dixon, Paul Tripp, Michael Cassinides, Antony Keely and Thomas Day. We need to continue to develop these players so as to allow them to reach their full potential.

I would like to thank Garry Bollard as my vice-captain throughout the year. Garry is fantastic with the kids and provides plenty of enthusiasm, encouragement and advice to the boys during games and at training. He also provides good support with both bat and ball and gives the team the bit of extra experience a young side such as ours requires. Congratulations Garry on your hat trick in the thirds in the last game.

With the Sub District not being able to provide umpires in the fourth eleven I greatly appreciate the efforts of Bruce Gardner and Wayne Shaw who umpired for us in the majority of games. Both gentlemen come from being involved in morning cricket and gave their time again in the afternoon in a role, which is demanding and not easy. I would also like to thank Mark Dixon, Kevin Tripp and my wife, Glenda for all their assistance throughout the season. Having the support cast and the enthusiasm of the boys around me made the season an enjoyable one for me.

I congratulate Will Partington-Gardner and Dean Turner on winning the respective averages and look forward to both players going further next season.

In concluding I thank Eric Ruuska as senior coach for his work with the boys and to other senior players who took the time during the year to offer advice. The senior players need to get involved with the boys as much as possible as hopefully some of these players will be first eleven players in the future.

HATCH SHIELD REPORT

After a long hard summer of training it was a disappointing carnival to say the very least. Unfortunately Broadmeadows only won one match this carnival but were very close in all the other matches. Close enough is not good enough!

I believe we had a very good and competitive squad that didn't perform to their ability. I know that this may sound very harsh but the truth can hurt at times. To lose 4 games by fewer than 10 runs just proves that, unfortunately no one stood up to take the game by the neck.

But through all that there were still some great positives. The likes of Carmine D'Amelio, Antony Keely and Anthony Barton all had good games through the tournament.

I know we set our sights high for the carnival, and although we didn't come close to fulfilling it, I still think we all had fun and if the truth be known I believe that is most important. Lets face it these kids are only 12, 13 or 14 years of age. If they are not having fun then they shouldn't be playing the game. To see the camaraderie between the boys is fantastic, both James and I see this as an important part of a junior's career.

We wish all the boys well in the cricketing future and hope one day to see one of their names on the back of an Australian shirt playing for the green and gold.

UNDER 10 REPORT

The Under 10's had 15 players participate in matches throughout the season. The side consisted of 13 boys and 2 girls ranging in ages from 7 to 10.

The boys and girls were very competitive losing only 3 games during the year. There are no finals or ladders in under 10 cricket.

Everyone showed improvement as the year progressed and I would like to give a special thanks to Norm Goodwin for helping with the coaching at training and on match days. Norm's knowledge and advice to the children is invaluable and very much appreciated by everyone involved.

I thank Neale Ronaldson for his help and Glenda Streiff as the side's manager in getting things organised until Norm or I arrived on match days. I also thank the other parents who assisted at times during the year.

At the completion of the season, medallions were presented to all the children.

With half the side eligible for under 12's next season we are well on the way to having both under 10's and under 12's next year. This is great for the club, as the ultimate aim is to field junior teams from under 10's through to under 16's. Milo cricket has been the stepping board and the club must also continue with this program next year to ensure we get a steady flow through of players each year into our under 10's.
