Firstly I would like to thank Geoff Turner for coaching the club in season 2001-2002. Unfortunately for Geoff he took on the job in what was probably the most difficult year for the club in not being able to fill 4 sides and a lack of numbers at training made it frustrating not just for Geoff but for everybody involved with the club. It also made it difficult for the chairman of selectors, Peter Dow and the captains of the other elevens. I must thank Ron Giles, James Bader and Peter along with Geoff in getting the numbers to get 3 sides on the ground each week. The lack of commitment to training reflected on where all sides finished on the ladder.
During the year Geoff broke the record number of 1st eleven games for the sub-district competition. Geoff started his cricket at Brunswick and then came to Broadmeadows where he has won Club Champion, Player of the Year and bowling averages and we are all looking forward to Geoff adding to his record. Congratulations Geoff.
I am pleased to announce that David McNamara has been appointed coach for season 2002-2003. David comes to us from Seabrook Cricket Club where he took them from the bottom of the ladder to play in finals the next season. Daniel Castaneda will assist David so I ask that everybody gets behind these guys and together we can take the club forward into finals cricket.
The highlight of the season was the performance of the Hatch squad. Coached by Chris Barton and Michael Hrvatin the boys went all the way to the grand final but unfortunately they just missed out on the big one. I would like to congratulate the boys on how they played the game throughout the tournament. I would like to thank the coaches, players, parents and everybody who supported the boys throughout the year. A special thanks to Weston Milling for their generous support.
The Coolaroo Ladies Cricket Club joined us this season and after a promising start to the year with good numbers and quality players, after Christmas a few players dropped off and we were unable to fill a side. Hopefully next season both men and women can work together in getting a team up and running again.
I would like to thank Mick Streiff and Norm Goodwin for looking after the under 10's and 12's. With good junior numbers around the club we are looking to add under 14's and 16's to our list. If anybody is interested in helping out please see Mick. I would also like to thank Dean Gazelle and Vic DeNola for running the Milo Have A Go program.
Finally I would like to thank the committee for their time, effort and support throughout the year. Also a big thank you to Sue Hudson, Liz Dow, Glenda Streiff and Ray Cornish for their work around the club during the year. Thanks to the Broadmeadows Sporting Club for their sponsorship and to all the players and supporters of the Broadmeadows Cricket Club for their support during the year. I hope to see everybody back next season to take the club forward for the upcoming years.

Socially, season 2001-2002 was one of the worst for a number of years. Player numbers were down which did not help attendances at social functions hence revenue was down.
Early in the season Karen Dick was forced to resign from the role of social secretary due to illness. This left us with a dilemma to try and find a new social secretary. We approached Karen Davis (a mother of one of the women cricketers) to take on the role and Karen accepted the position. Unfortunately things did not work out with Karen and we decided to share the load amongst ourselves.
The annual shopping tour, run by Glenda Streiff was another success. Well done Glenda.
The tribute night for Geoff Turner was poorly attended but the people who did turn up had a great night. It was good to see support from Brunswick Cricket Club on the night with Blair Hillhouse and John Swanson in attendance. Blair gave us an insight of Geoff's days at Brunswick while Rod Browning (who could not make it on the night) passed on some notes regarding Geoff's adventures as well. It was disappointing that representatives from other clubs did not attend or even bother to reply to the invitation.
The Hatch Shield presentation night was a huge success with 80 people in attendance. Representatives from Melbourne University, North Melbourne and Essendon cricket clubs were invited and presented awards and gave speeches of encouragement for the boys. VSDCA secretary, Daryl Thiele also gave a speech and encouraged the boys to persevere with their cricket into the future.
Presentation night was a relief for a few people as it was the end of a very ordinary season on the field and it was time to let their hair down and reflect back on what could have been.
Thanks to the Broadmeadows Sporting Club for allowing us to hold our functions in their sports pavilion.
I would like to thank Sue Hudson, Liz Dow and Glenda Streiff for their efforts throughout the season.
Unfortunately the same group of people attended the social functions. Somehow we need to attract all players, families and friends to come along to social functions and enjoy themselves. This will benefit the club in the long term by creating the camaraderie that is currently missing throughout the club.
The social secretary's role is the toughest to manage in any club. It requires constant harassment of players to get them to commit themselves to attend social functions. It is about time everyone made the social secretary's job a little easier.

Well what a year 2001-2002 was. It may well be the year that decides Broadmeadows fate as another year like it will not see it survive, at least as part of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. On the other hand it may well be the catalyst to get the club and its people moving again. Let's hope that it is the latter, and then lets make it happen.
After losing so many players during the off season it was heartening to see in excess of 20 players turn up at the first training session on a cold August morning and in competition with local junior football finals. Unfortunately our numbers did not improve much during the season, in fact there would have been less than that number turn up on many occasions during the season proper. The lack of numbers at training did not allow those who were prepared to put in the work to reap the rewards of their toil. Unfortunately some of those who did train saw fit to come and go as they please, and as a result training on a lot of nights was just batting and bowling. Variety, extra fitness work and the like was just not possible with the limited numbers that turned up and stayed to the end, and to those people who continually put in the hard yards I sincerely apologise. There is no doubt in my mind we missed out on potential players or lost some existing players because we could not demonstrate that we were a bubbly, energetic club high on numbers and ambition.
For the bulk of the season we were only able to field three sides. However due to a quirk in the draw we were able to muster a fourth eleven for two games and this gave the club an opportunity to play a number of boys from the Hatch Shield squad. The boys all held their own at this level and by years end found themselves playing third eleven cricket and still remaining more than competitive. However this was symptomatic of the situation in which we found ourselves. The club had to play individuals in elevens that may not have been appropriate for them, some simply because they did not possess, or had developed, the skills to do so. Others such as the Hatch boys were just starting their 'open age' careers and were thrown in at the deep end and some others found themselves pressured to play despite carrying injuries. Hopefully no one will carry any long-term scars as a result of this and all players in the future will be able to develop and work on their skills, be able to experience team success and be able to enjoy their cricket in an appropriate environment.
The positives of the year were the return of Daniel Castaneda to the club, and he rewarded us by becoming club champion. The club must work extra hard to keep him at Broadmeadows next year. And in terms of the future the number of young players, either existing who worked their way up through the eleven's or the Hatch boys I have already spoken about. There is no doubt that the club does have a number of junior or younger players who really can play. It is our job to make sure we keep them all together and help them to continue their development.
Congratulations must of course go to the Hatch Shield squad on their success. Being unbeaten in the run up to the final was a fantastic effort and it provided a very important first for the club in making that final, particularly at a time when the club really needed something to hang its hat on. Congratulations and many thanks to Chris Barton and Michael Hrvatin for the fantastic job they did, and to all the parents, helpers and supporters for being part of a special time for the boys.
Thanks also to Ron Giles and James Bader as captains of the second and third elevens for their time and effort in a trying season. Also to Peter Dow as chairman of selectors who, with James, had the thankless task of having to find players to fill teams most weeks.
I have said throughout my time at Broadmeadows that I have not experienced a stronger sense of camaraderie or team spirit anywhere. That though was certainly being tested by the end of the season but only due to the strain of competing against dwindling numbers each week. The club is already active with recruitment for next year and will bolster playing stocks. Please make the commitment to stay with the club and do whatever you can to encourage others to join.
In closing I cannot single out any other individuals because I must thank everybody at Broadmeadows for giving me the opportunity to coach the club. I realize that it was only the circumstances of the time that led the committee to turn to me but I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to complete what may well be the only missing chapter in my career.
At the time of writing I am not sure what the future holds for me personally. Certainly now is the time that every Broady person whether they be player, official or supporter, must get off their butts and really put in the effort to ensure that this great club survives.

It was always going to be tough for the first eleven in 2001-2002. Gone from the previous year were Mark Leehane, Eric Ruuska, Peter Haydon, Wayne Dow and Bodie Royle. When you also add Ian Hudson's name to the list due to his ongoing battle with injury it is no wonder that some predictions had us going winless for the season. There was however a major plus for us, the return to the club of Daniel Castaneda.
Leehane, Haydon and Ruuska contributed 1250 runs the previous year but with no new 'name' players joining our ranks there was always a chance that our batting would prove to be our weakness. This proved to be the case, although not through any lack of commitment or application with the bat, but more so the fact that we did not have the couple of class players that you need, once at the crease, can stay in and dominate an attack.
The wickets provided for us at home where we played most of our games, whilst of reasonable standard, certainly had a bit in them and kept most of our batsmen on their toes most of the time. Also the fact that I could not win a toss when it really counted did not help. Early in the season we found ourselves batting first after being sent in on green tops, then, at Altona chasing runs on an under prepared wicket after bowling on a 'road' the first week in 35 degree heat. I also did not help the cause after winning my first toss of the season and then electing to bowl against Melton.
That said our batsmen did try very hard and did occupy the crease for long periods of time. We just did not make enough runs. Ben Rose, given the task of batting in the top three, showed a lot of guts and discipline by regularly seeing off the new ball and toughing it out in difficult times. Once Ben becomes confident in himself and learns to work the ball around a bit more he will reap the rewards. Ben also proved that he is more than useful with the ball, tying up an end and picking up some valuable wickets along the way.
Scott Waterman was probably the success story of the year. Still in his teens, and with only a handful of games behind him, he took on the role of number four and made it his own. As the year progressed Scott became more confident, realized that he did fit in at this level and was looking to take it up to the bowlers at every opportunity. In my mind there is no doubt that Scott can become a 'gun' player for us in the near future. David Lawson deservedly won the batting trophy for the first time. This year David found himself as the 'man' the opposition wanted to get. He was our only player who could take the attack by the scruff of the neck and was able to do that a couple of times during the season. He made the only two half centuries for the year and his innings against Balwyn was brutal and a delight to watch. Congratulations David. Robert Goodwin played useful innings for us, particularly before Christmas, but suffered at the hands of the umpires at times. John Forder saw us over the line against Sunshine with an inspiring innings and Andrew Bonaguro was another who had to tough it out at the top of the order but was unfortunately unable to capitalize on starts. As I said all in all a very tough year for the batsmen.
With the ball we were more than competitive. Daniel Castaneda on his return bowled brilliantly. He had very little luck early but anyone, who bowls an immaculate line and length, moves the ball and at good speed for long periods will eventually get their reward. Daniel did and as a result won the bowling award he so richly deserved. His batting was also a bonus for us. He played several good innings, either as an aggressive striker or holding us together. Daniel is also a worthy recipient of the title of Club Champion. Well done. Steve Goodwin although bowling without much luck was still a dangerous customer. Had the umpires raised the finger when they should have, and I can think of several instances particularly Williamstown (when we would have won) and also against Werribee and Kew, both Steve and the first eleven would have fared better. Steve also fought hard with the bat, no more so than against Yarraville, when he played a brilliant innings on a dreadful wicket and in doing so was able to make himself "look like Chops". Pas Sciulli fought through the pain barrier to bowl very well, particularly after Christmas. No one has a bigger heart than Paco and the way he finished the year was most pleasing. I am sure he won't mind me saying that he also bowled some of the funniest deliveries of the year.
Young players in William Partington-Gardner, Steve Afflitto and Nayan Sharma were all given opportunities during the season and all showed that they would be able to play with success at this level. Good luck to all of them.
At the end we were not winless, we won three games which was the same as the previous year, we were more than competitive in just about every game we played and often it was just the last hour or so that found us out. Opposition clubs certainly knew that they had played a game of cricket.
Many thanks to Bill Lawson for his help during the year, to Ray Cornish for looking after the scorebook and everyone else who assisted me, and the first eleven during the year.

It was a long year for the seconds this year. When a number of players are lost from the first eleven from the previous season the inevitable result is players playing in a higher eleven than anticipated. So it was for the seconds this year. To the credit of all players involved whilst we didn't win a game the spirit of the team remained positive.
Garry Bollard led the bowling. He proved that bowling a good line and length and sticking to the basics would bring rewards. Garry played the year with a number of injuries but always performed with character, especially when the going got tough.
Sam Ratnatunga performed well despite having to consistently bowl with few runs on the board. Sam did a good job of juggling the need to take wickets whilst at the same time restricting the scoring rate, not easy for a leg spinner to do.
Ang Anthakis, Greg Shaw, Nathan Briggs and Mick Staples all contributed at various times - for them the lessons learnt should be the need for consistency.
The batting was brittle. Dale Rozario was the best performed batsman and showed the younger players the virtue of patience and playing within your limitations. Dale's efforts were even more commendable given his inability to train due to work commitments.
Nayan Sharma and Will Partington-Gardner showed they could make runs at this level and Dean Gazelle battled hard at the top of the order.
The aim of the seconds is to promote players to the firsts. It was personally satisfying to see Steve Afflitto, Will Partington-Gardner, and Nayan Sharma all play in the firsts and perform credibly. Nayan and Steve both have all round abilities. Will's batting is his main strength plus outstanding fielding skills. These players all have big futures at the club and hopefully this year is the basis for better things in years to come.
Other younger players to get a chance this year were Nathan Briggs, Greg Shaw, and Mick Staples. All showed good form at some stage and they should benefit from the experience. Special thanks also to Vic DeNola for his willingness to fill in whenever required.
I'd like to thank Gary Staples for his work as scorer and unofficial team manager. Bruce Gardner, Wayne Shaw, Charlie Afflitto, Jenny Briggs and Des Kent also formed our regular supporter base.
Finally a thank you to Geoff Turner for his efforts as coach in what was the toughest year in the clubs history. Not an easy job and Geoff performed his duties well.

Season 2001-2002 was always going to be a tough season with the loss of players from all elevens. Not having a 4th eleven for the majority of the season put even more pressure on the players not being able to be dropped and given the opportunity to regain confidence and form in the 4th's. To their credit, the boys fought hard and were competitive on many occasions, winning 2 games and being in a commanding position in 4 games but let it slip.
There were a lot of positives to come out of this season. I thought John Dick's game took a big step forward with great leadership on the field. He bowled well giving all he had. Then the added responsibility of batting in the top order, knowing that we had a very young side, added to the pressure but John seemed to thrive on this and toughed it out on many occasions getting us off to a reasonable start.
Mick Streiff played in the 3rd eleven this season. He was great with the young players guiding them and encouraging them at all times as well as assisting me in my role as captain. Mick's experience was invaluable. Mick made a few good scores, helping the young players around him build some handy partnerships and putting us in a competitive position.
A few 2nd eleven players played a number of games in the 3rd eleven this season due to work commitments or injuries and were great. Dean Gazelle made 32 against Sunshine and 33 against Williamstown, Michael Staples made 50 no and took 3/27 against Yarraville, Dale Rozario made 31 against Preston and Garry Bollard took 4/25 against Williamstown.
Special thanks to Aberfeldie Cricket Club, who provided some junior players. Without their support we would have found it difficult to field a 3rd eleven. Sam Watson took 3/26 against Williamstown. Terrence Dixon batted solidly against Melton while unfortunately his teammates were going out around him. Jarrod Stirling took a couple of fantastic catches against Williamstown. Tim Robertson kept extremely well and batted solidly against Brunswick. Tom Hempenstall battled hard in trying conditions against Ivanhoe. Thank you guys.
Week in week out Bradley Turner, Jason McAuley and Sean Wolfe were battling on for Broadmeadows.
The hatch boys were fantastic. Batting, bowling and in the field, these boys were competitive with all of them at some point in the season doing something really special and reminding us all that they are the future of cricket. As young as these boys are, they showed a great fighting spirit and a want to win, never giving up.
Special thanks to Geoff Turner our coach, Mick Streiff, John Dick, Peter Dow and John Forder for their support throughout the season. Thank you to the Broadmeadows Cricket Club for giving me the opportunity to captain the 3rd eleven. It has been a pleasure and a great experience.

The 4th eleven was withdrawn from the competition after round 9 when it was realised that we could not fill the side on a regular basis after struggling all season to do so.
In the 2 matches that were played, we were competitive but not quite good enough to win. A few of the Hatch boys played in these 2 games and later in the season played in the 3rd eleven and performed very well.
Against Port Melbourne there were 2 good performances - Dale Rozario and Brad Turner. Dale made 94 out of 155 in his first game for the club and went on to win the 2nd XI batting average. Brad bowled extremely well taking 5/71 in his best ever performance.
As it is mandatory to have 4 sides to remain in the Sub District Association we need to ensure that we achieve this next season. Encourage your friends to come along and have a game of cricket, enjoy the camaraderie and help us stay in the competition for many years to come.

After much deliberation, Coolaroo Ladies Cricket Club decided to join Broadmeadows Sub-District Cricket Club for season 2001-2002. With much anticipation we folded our club to join an exciting new venture. We arrived with an enthusiastic small band of players for the "C" grade competition and a Schoolgirls team from Box Forest Secondary College.
After deciding to train 1 night a week it became apparent that the very young members of our team definitely needed 2 nights training and then it became increasingly difficult to hold their concentration for long.
Debra Mitchell, the team captain became increasingly frustrated at the lack of commitment by some players and together with sickness, injury and disinterest, it was harder to field a full team every week. We played 5 games before Christmas without much success and after the break could not find enough players to continue.
If a ladies team is going to represent Broadmeadows in future there has to be a bigger commitment by everyone involved at the club.
I would like to thank the committee for their generosity to Tayla Mitchell for the donation to help her participate in the Primary Schools Sports Association Under 13 team that travelled to Adelaide. The team was runners-up to NSW.
In conclusion I appeal to everyone to look out for girls to play next season as if run correctly and with the junior program running successfully we can have a happy family club to be proud of.

There are pros and cons on whether the coach and/or team manager should have links with the NWCA or other junior comp sides. Michael and I had inside knowledge of many of the boys trying out for Hatch, as both our boys played in the local Saturday morning comp as well as some combined games i.e. Mitchell, IAJCC and NWCA. This enabled us to spend extra time screening the other comp players. On the other hand we were outsiders to Broadmeadows and felt, initially, that we were doing a job that seemed an unwanted burden to some at the club and help was of limited supply. However this did change.
I believe the Committee is heading in the right direction in the proposal of selecting a Hatch Coach that will also be involved with a local Saturday morning comp (NWCA), but he will need assistance from both the committee and other senior players. It would also be an enormous advantage to have good communications with several NWCA, or other comp junior coaches (preferably 'A' sides) with the possibility one of them could be involved as team manager, a position of extremely high importance and should not be overlooked.
An area of some concern was that we gave out to all players our full training program at the first training session. With the inclement weather, we often had to alter the schedule. It also gave other Sub District sides the opportunity of knowing when our player cuts were and this enabled them to make theirs that bit sooner (often a boy will take the first chance, just in case he may miss the others.) I suggest giving out fortnightly or monthly training schedules and have them corresponding with centre wicket availability so they don't overlap with the Ladies games or reserve days.
It was also obvious early that the boys needed as much training on turf tracks as they could get (they looked good on the synthetic), but again pitch preparation was hampered by the weather and senior commitments for the nets. I must give credit to the committee, Geoff Turner and players for allowing the squad to spend valuable time in the turf nets leading up to and during the carnival period as it cut into their senior times, thank you.
Michael spent much time in June and July 2001 in getting names of potential Hatch boys for training, ringing regional managers as well as names from last seasons Mitchell, IAJCC and competition trophy winners to give the boys and us every opportunity. If you only send out selectively for certain players you may miss out on new or improved boys and possibly alienate others. Michael and I did target a 'core' group of boys we hoped would train and play - Olitha Perera was one. Some other players we missed out on. When asked why, certain players/parents talked of the structure and aura Broadmeadows had in previous years. Coaching styles and player support were mentioned. Some of this I believe was hearsay from other sources and was not taken as first hand news.
We must thank the Broadmeadows Sporting Club for their support to the boys. Even more so to Michael in getting Weston Milling to sponsor the boys with training shorts and match tops. Without these additional items the boys wouldn't have looked the part.
Michael and I started training on Thursday, October 25, 2001. It was chaotic with all the boys present wanting to have a hit and bowl in the turf nets. Fielding and group work was a priority of mine, if a player lacked in this area of his game he was behind the eight ball. Michael worked in the nets mainly to check the boys' styles and get a 'feeling' of the quality of the players. It became obvious several players were not at the standard we required, and some did not return after 2 or 3 training sessions.
A bonus for us was the number of boys who came from different regions (comps). The Bendigo boys were top players and although rain intervened they tried to attend most Sunday sessions. I hope Broadmeadows keeps an open invitation to them next year. Our final cut was based on what we had seen as well as 'gut feelings'. Due to some poor weather we hadn't been able to evaluate everyone properly but believed the 14 man squad would give a good account. We tried to build a side of boys who worked well together and not just one-dimensional players. This gave us the option to be very flexible with our batting/bowling line-ups. Players understood the structure of the side and their respective roles.
The inter-squad and practice matches were valuable. The boys not only got match practice on the turf, they worked well as a team and bonded. It also gave Michael and I an insight into what was needed to keep it all together.
During the carnival we had hoped to keep a fairly settled line-up with slight adjustments each game due to our rotation of players. This worked well with each knowing their job and responsibility.
The wins early provided us with the belief that setting certain goals each day made us that much better and stronger. Our mascot (HUGO) also worked having a 'relief valve' for those who may have failed on a particular day to see the funny side and keep trying. As we progressed through to the grand final it was great to have the full support being shown by Broadmeadows and the players with more interaction between each other. I hope this continues, as I know the boys loved it.
Unfortunately, our worst game was the grand final, but again the boys showed fight with the middle to lower order bats playing well and several bowlers making good contribution with the ball.
On behalf of Michael and myself we thank you for the opportunity of looking after and coaching the boys.

The club continued to expand and develop its junior ranks this season with the inclusion of an under 12 side in the NWCA and an under 13 girls side in a competition organised by the VCA. Next season we are hoping to field an under 14 side and possibly under 16. The expansion of our junior ranks has developed over the past 6 years starting from 'Have A Go Milo' cricket. The increase in numbers will require more parent participation and if possible senior player assistance.
The club's future in the years to come will depend on a strong and vibrant junior body with sides in all levels in the NWCA a must. Our future senior players in both mens and womens sides will come from our juniors so it is vital that we do our best to support the children in their junior years.
Milo Have A Go
We had approximately 30 registrations in our two programs during the season. Numbers were quite small at our Saturday morning sessions at Sewell Reserve and I think we might have to look at a change in day/time. I would like to thank Vic DeNola and Dean Gazelle for their efforts in running the program each Saturday. Our program run at the Broadmeadows Secondary College on Wednesday nights had good numbers and my thanks and appreciation goes to Darrell Marr for his efforts in overseeing the program. Darrell does a great job in following the children up at the local schools and obtaining strong parent support to assist him at each session. I thank all the parents who offered assistance throughout the year.
Under 10
We had 13 players including 3 girls participate in the games this year. The children had lots of fun and had some success during the year, with most showing improvement which is what the games are all about. I would like to thank Norm Goodwin for coaching the children each Friday night and Andrew Storer as team manager/scorer and for giving me assistance on training nights. I would also like to thank the parents who assisted at times during the season.
Under 12
Numbers were good with 15 boys playing during the season. Although we only had two wins during the season the boys improved every week and were competitive in most games. With most of the boys still available for under 12's next season the experiences and training of this season should give them confidence next year. I would like to thank all the parents for their support, especially Keith Gay who assisted at training and to my wife, Glenda who collected money and assisted with the organisation each week. I also wish the boys who go up to under 14's next year all the best. Congratulations to Kane Midolo who won the batting and bowling averages.
Under 13 Girls
The VCA under Gary Sanders established an under 13 competition this season which will next season go to an under 14 competition within the NWCA. The matches played were a modified 8 a side competition with some of the girls coming from our Have A Go Milo program and our under 10's. I would like to thank Darrell Marr who took over as coach after a couple of games and made the matches fun and enjoyable for the girls as well as a learning experience. Also thanks to Bev Storer and Karen Dick who assisted with scoring and organising the girls. With the competition going to under 14 we hope all girls will continue to represent the club next season.
In concluding we now need to look at a small junior committee to ensure we are meeting the children's needs and the parents expectations. This committee can then make decisions regarding the future progression of this very important component of our club.
