PRESIDENTS REPORT

Once again season 2002-2003 was going to be a challenging one for the club. With numbers dwindling over the past few years and being under pressure from the association to fulfill our commitment of putting 4 sides on the park, it was decided to appoint a coach from outside the club. After interviewing numerous applicants it was decided to entrust David McNamara with the job of leading the club. To David's credit, the time and effort he put in planning pre season training and with the help of Bruce Gardner and co talking with approximately 100 potential new recruits, things were starting to fall into place. By the time the first game came around, David had the place buzzing. We had good numbers at training and everybody was fit and ready to go as a result of a good hard pre season.

The end result was the club's best performance for many years on and off the field with all elevens being competitive and recording some good wins during the season. With the foundation being laid and David's re-appointment as coach for the next 2 seasons I look forward to David taking the club to bigger and better things. Thank you David.

Once again Mick Streiff took on the role as junior co-ordinator. He was rewarded with his under 12 team playing off in the grand final. Unfortunately they did not quite get over the line. Good luck next season. I must thank the coaches and parents for helping out with the boys and girls during the season and for attending some of our social functions. I am sure a good time was had by all. I look forward to seeing you all again next season.

I would like to thank Michael Johnstone for coaching the hatch shield squad and Darrell Marr for coordinating the Milo Have A Go program.

I would also like to thank James Bader for sacrificing his own game to do the thankless task of practice captain, Bill Lawson for marking the wickets on game day and Bev Storer for the preparation of the afternoon teas. Thank you.

Finally I would like to thank the committee for your support over the last four years. We have been through some hard times together from being ripped off to lack of numbers and fighting for survival. Through the hard work and dedication from you people, things are starting to look better for the club. I trust you will continue to give 100% to the next president. Thank you very much.

SOCIAL REPORT

Well here we are again, another season over and preparing for the next one and what a season it was. Expectations were high, a new social committee, new events and an upgrade of some old ones and all were well received by the players and committee, young and old.

The Christmas party was the highlight of the season with a huge turnout. Who could forget Santa arriving on the fire truck with hoards of children following behind yelling in delight, the jumping castle and face painting. Hopefully we can look forward to a great party again this Christmas. All functions were well attended this year with presentation night also being well attended with record numbers. All the work was not done alone and I must give my utmost thanks to Sharon, Bruce G, Soxy, Ben (Rosie) and valuable contribution by Steve and Peter who relieved some of the stress. Thanks to Sharon and Steve who opened their home for meetings and to the Social Butterfly for keeping you informed of current events and post event evaluation in the Holy Grail.

So let's look forward to the season ahead. We are already in the planning stages and hope to have a special year. Things can only improve and hopefully we will once again have your support to keep the club up and running. Social is an important part of the club so if you are interested in helping out let us know, you will be more than welcome.

So once again thank you to everybody, and see you all soon.

COACH'S REPORT

Season 2002/2003 can be looked back on with considerable pride and affection by all involved with the Broadmeadows Cricket Club. Our performances at the end of the season statistically, whilst not brilliant were enough to suggest we have a firm foundation to work on. There was a much improved club performance and we can all look positively on the results. The Sub District Cricket Association have seen and documented the improvement in our club on the field and the fact that our club hosted the Hatch Shield final proves we have impressed off the field also. Well done to our committee. When we set our goals in mid 2002 the main thoughts were that we had to achieve the following:

I am pleased to say that we fielded 4 teams in every game. These teams through no small efforts by the captains won many games and represented the club and each other on the whole, very well.

The fourth eleven narrowly missed the finals which given the fact that we have not effectively had a 4th's for a couple of years was a great effort. There was a blend of experienced and some younger players added with a few new players meaning that the team was full. The team was ably led by Mick Streiff and supported by Tucky, Bosa and Simon. I have no doubt this eleven will become a grooming team for future senior players within our club. Some solid performances were put in with Garry Bollard having a great year and Bosa chiming in with solid performances often.

The third eleven had a season that we can definitely improve upon. A few wins were had; the one against Preston was a great win under considerable pressure. Thanks to Ang Anthakis who captained the team and often had to chase up players to finalise his eleven due to changes in other sides. Of the team that played in the 3rds during the year many played in the 2nds and were successful. Rick Donaldson, James Bader and others including Sean Wolfe and Charlie Zaffino supported Ang. Some good performances were put in by players such as Sean Wolfe with 7 wickets in an innings twice, Joe Falcone with a century and Mark Philipson with two 50's before moving into the 2nds. The 3rd eleven needs to be the team which constantly puts pressure on the higher elevens whilst developing players, we look forward to our 3rds building on this stabilizing year.

The seconds were a tremendously improved team on previous recent years. The team won several games and lost a number by very narrow margins. With another win or two in the close games, the 2nds could have pushed for a finals berth. The team had the talent to finish a lot higher than the final resting-place on the ladder, however it was a very solid year compared to the last couple of seasons. Ron Giles captained the side well and ensured players remained focussed on playing to win and in the right spirit. There were also several players who moved into the 2nds and played well from the 3rds. Ron ensured players were given several opportunities to prove and improve their skills. Good performances during the year were from Steve Davies, Jamie Rowan, John Forder, Anthony Barton and Michael Staples to name a few.

The first eleven had a year that provided many highlights. A couple of ordinary team performances and a real chance to push the 1sts into future finals series if we work hard together. The team finished with more points than many other years, although with one or two more wins at crucial times, we could have even pushed for a finals place. I will expand further in the 1st X1 report.

In regards to training, our numbers were very good throughout the whole year. With 2 weeks to go in the season we had 39 players at training, this is a great sign that players really wanted to improve and work on their game. Thanks to those players who trained regularly. A big thank you to James Bader for being Practice Captain and assisting in many different ways to make sure training was conducted properly.

We have analyzed our training methods for last year and are ensuring we put more resources into coaching specific areas of each player's game. Player attendance was tracked for the entire year and it was clear to see who was committed to the cause and who took the short cuts. There are many commitments in our daily lives and obviously family and work will take the front seat in terms of priorities. All I can ask is that you train when you can, work hard on your game and be honest and communicate when you cannot train.

Preseason training is not a hindrance to our lives as cricketers. To ensure we are best prepared for the year ahead a full preseason is required. As I have stated many times, a footballer that struggles is often linked to a poor preseason regime. Why is cricket any different? Let's give ourselves every chance to perform well this year.

The program is clearly communicated once again, and I urge all players to attend the camp and as many sessions as possible. If you have ideas that can help our program contact me as soon as possible. They are welcome. There is nothing more frustrating than hearing "If Only" we had done things a certain way, when it is too late to impact the result. We are also continuing to recruit new players so, as we are able to fill our teams well and put pressure on players in all grades.

In closing, I would like thank the committee of the club for appointing me captain coach for the past season and for also having the faith to reappoint me. I would also like to thank all involved for making Kristie and myself feel welcomed.

Thanks also to the following people for their efforts in supporting me at different times during the year, in terms of X1 captaincy's, selection, scoring etc: Geoff Turner, Mick Streiff, Ron Giles, Ang Anthakis, Steve Goodwin, Daniel Castaneda and Damian Negri.

Let's make this next year a year that really counts for our club.

See you at preseason training.

1st ELEVEN REPORT

Season 2002/2003 brought many highlights and challenges for the first XI to overcome. There were some great personal achievements as well as some enjoyable wins. The first XI finished with the equivalent of 5 wins and could have easily finished a few places higher on the ladder. Wins against Moorabbin, Melton, Williamstown and Brunswick were all good team efforts and often the club song was sung with great gusto. The weekend where we defeated Melton and Brunswick in 2 days had the side playing very good team cricket. Games against Sunshine, Balwyn, Altona and a tie against Ivanhoe could easily have been 4 more wins as we held the ascendancy for most of these games.

Our efforts against some of the premier sides in the competition were disappointing with bad defeats to Coburg, Preston and Yarraville. Playing these teams is a great challenge and it is often qualities such as discipline, concentration and working hard for 80 overs, which wins these teams many games. To a man we match up against most sides in the competition and as a result of this we need to continue to improve and work on the qualities mentioned.

The players who played in the team during the year all contributed to the team. Each player brings good qualities to the side and it is great that all players at our club have a sense of humour and strong beliefs in their abilities to get them through the hard times. Playing in a team means being part of the side, the structure and understanding what teamwork should be all about. This means preparing for games by training, being on time to games and warming up for the day ahead. A successful preparation generally brings a successful result.

From the batting point of view the side generally made competitive scores with a high of 298 against Sunshine and a low of 82 against Yarraville. Our habit of losing wickets in clumps rather than staggered put pressure on at times, however there was always one player who generally worked through the hard times and posted a score. Andrew Bonaguro opened the batting for the year and had a very solid year and when batting at his best was great to watch. His discipline and team ethics are very strong. His century against Sunshine was a great knock as was many of his consistent performances during the year. Well done to Andrew on winning the batting award for the season. Many other players batted well at times and some solid efforts were made by John Forder, Ian Hudson, Eric Ruuska for the year with some other personal bests from Pas Sciulli and Daniel Casteneda, Ben Rose and Scott Waterman.

In the bowling department Daniel Castaneda and Eric Ruuska led the attack. Both bowled with good discipline and control. Daniel had several great performances with a 7-wicket haul against Brunswick and a 5-wicket haul against Melton. He has a habit of getting good players out. His efforts to win the bowling award and the Club Champion award were good rewards for his efforts. Eric bowled very well during the year and also had a knack of breaking a partnership and getting good players out. Eric bowls well to his field and is always thinking about getting the batsman out. His 7-wicket haul against Yarraville was a great reward for his efforts. We also had support with the ball from Pas Sciulli, Steve Goodwin and Geoff Turner who chipped in with wickets and good spells with regularity.

Our fielding at times was very good and often when our mistakes were low our performance was high. This is no coincidence. We need to be more consistent in this area as we can win games in the field. The year started poorly in game 1 and finished at an average standard in the final game. We will pay attention to this next season with great intensity. On a brighter note there were many great catches and run outs during the year. David Lawson behind the stumps was efficient and gutsy and Bona in the covers was always on the move cutting off runs.

There were also some new players brought into the team who all showed they have the ability to play at this level. Jamie Rowan, Glen Richmond and Glenn Lehner all made a contribution to the team and will benefit from a full pre season with the club this year.

In closing, thanks to all the players for their efforts during the year. Thank you to members of the committee and the wives and girlfriends who made the efforts to come down and offer support to the club. A personal thanks to Geoff, Daniel and Steve who helped in areas of selection and Damian Negri for being team manager.

I believe that the first XI can push for a finals berth if we work together and stay positive.

DAVID MCNAMARA

2nd ELEVEN REPORT

This was a year where the side was competitive in all but one game and had we been able to hold catches a finals position was not out of the question. We won five games and lost three others that were decided by the last wicket. Close but not close enough.

Our strength was the batting. John Forder was the standout in the games he played and was a model of consistency. Younger team members benefited from his experience and support. Jamie Rowan had a big year and won promotion to the firsts. Ben Rose did well towards the end of the year and was well supported by Steve Davies who had an impressive first year at the club and provided stability in the top order. Robert Goodwin showed glimpses of the form but work commitments limited his training. Hopefully next year will be more settled for him and he can again push for promotion and play at a level that reflects his ability. Glen Richmond showed he can play and contributed with both bat and ball in the games he played.

A highlight for me was the form of some of the younger players. Mick Staples had a wonderful year and showed enormous improvement. He went very close to gaining promotion - his best effort was against Brunswick where he nearly won us the game. Will Partington-Gardner had a good year with the gloves and his batting against Yarraville was a pleasure to watch. Greg Shaw wins the award for the most persistent - his batting is improving and he will remember the Melton game for his bowling. His work ethic at training is impressive and I hope Greg is a regular team member next year. Anthony Barton was a standout in the games he played and clearly has enormous potential. His future development is an exciting prospect for the club.

Thanks as ever to Sam Ratnatunga for his bowling efforts and support as vice captain and to Pas Sciulli for his efforts when injury prevented him from playing in the firsts.

Thanks also to Sean "Houdini" Wolfe who provided many memorable moments. Sean always gave 100% in his own unique individual way.

The on field efforts are always supported by a group who work off the field. Gary Staples was wonderful as team manager/scorer/Mick's shopper/"dad get my drink" etc. The Barton family provided assistance with scoring on a number of occasions.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Bruce Gardner and Wayne Shaw who provided transport for the Hoppers Crossing brigade and provided valuable counsel and support to me. I look forward to watching you uncork another good red and settling back to watch the games next season.

Finally to David McNamara who took a club that was on it's knees one year to a competitive unit that fielded four teams every week, not an easy job. David provided enthusiasm and a work ethic that encouraged players to perform at their best.

3rd ELEVEN REPORT

The 3rd XI this year looked fairly strong throughout the year, with a consistently stable team. The disappointing thing was that players were turning up 10 minutes before play, or players not turning up at all which is something that needs to be improved.

It was a very trying year, but there still were a few positives that included some new recruits. "PHILLO" earlier in the year, who added strength to our batting and was also a great help to me. Joe Falcone who made a cameo 103* at Yarraville when we were looking down the barrel at 4/13 in the second dig. Another positive was the conversion of Nathan Briggs from a good net bowler to a good game bowler, which also improved his batting as well. Robert Hrvatin also took another step up and really batted well when required. This resulted in him getting pushed up the order, in the later part of the year. Matthew Afflitto came up from the 4th XI late in the year to also impress with bat and ball.

The team overall had potential to finish much better than we did, but just couldn't put it together. I was very happy to see the young fellows step up and enjoy their cricket this year, even though we only won a couple of games.

4th ELEVEN REPORT

At the start of the season the main priority as a club was to field a fourth eleven each week. The injection of a new coach in David McNamara and a fresh and enthusiastic pre season resulted in improved numbers. Most weeks we were able to field 11 players and the side's results were much better then I anticipated at the start of the season. For the record, 12 games played, 6 wins (including 1 outright), 1 draw and 5 losses, Total 43 points to just miss out on the four.

A Total of 24 players were used during the year with only five players being under 20. The likes of Dean Turner, Matthew Afflitto, Brad Turner, Brad Dean and Mark O'Brien all showed something throughout the year. These guys need to consolidate on these performances and push for higher selection next season. We must therefore ensure we have an influx of further junior players next season.

With experience players such as Garry Bollard, Paul Bosanko and Simon Hewat in the side, junior players will be able to get good coaching and advice to help develop their game. I thank these guys for their support and help throughout the year.

Team highlights for the year were an outright win over Preston and a 16 run win over Coburg who went on to win the flag. Some individual highlights during the year were Dean Turner's 5/7 against Preston, Garry Bollard's 7/31 against Melton, George DeNola's 5/15 against Kew and Paul Bosanko's 89 against Williamstown. I congratulate Garry Bollard for his outstanding effort in winning the batting and bowling average and capping it off with the Player of the Year award. Garry is a fantastic competitor who is willing to teach younger players and his year is a fitting reward for his years of service.

I would like to thank and congratulate David McNamara in his first year as coach. The overall player fitness was much better and the atmosphere around the club improved which helped to keep numbers at a more consistent level.

I would like to thank James Bader and Paul Bosanko for looking after the team and pre match requirements each week along with Glenda Streiff for her assistance with afternoon tea and cleaning up at our home games. The support from these people and the players made the year a very enjoyable one. One however that I believe was a missed opportunity as I believe the side should have made the finals.

In concluding I ask that all players stick with the club and support David in his second year as coach. Success will not just happen, we need to make it happen.

MICK STREIFF

HATCH SHIELD REPORT

No Report submitted by Coach.

I would like to thank Michael Johnstone for the effort and time he put into the job. Michael was very keen on all the aspects of cricket especially fielding and running between the wickets. At club level the emphasis is not so much on this and I hope the boys take on what they learnt in the future. I would also like to thank William Kyriakides as team manager, Dean Dixon (scorer) and Peter Burns for their assistance throughout the series.

The boys started the competition with 2 comfortable wins against Balwyn and Preston. The batsmen were the stars with Joel Kolep 39, Luke Kyriakides 33no, Brad Dean 29 and Ben Smith 24 against Balwyn, Brad Dean 71, Luke Kyriakides 38no, Joel Kolep 22 and Ben Smith 20 against Preston. Ben Smith snared 3/23 and Ben Harding 2/14 against Preston.

The wheels fell off in the next game against Kew. We were bundled out for 68. However, Kew struggled to reach 8/67 before being bowled out for 73.

Against Ivanhoe and Coburg we were beaten comprehensively.

In the last game against Brunswick, Ben Smith 59, Brad Dean 58 and Mitchell Johnstone 4/14 helped us to win the game.

I congratulate Brad Dean on winning the Player of the Series and other trophy winners in Ben Smith and Joel Kolep.

MICHAEL STREIFF

JUNIOR REPORT

Season 2002-03 saw the club enter and under 14 girls side in the newly formed NWCA Girls competition. Unfortunately with only a few players from the previous season eligible for boys under 14 we were unable to progress our boys teams to an under 14 side.

Next season will see a number of boys eligible so it will be a priority to ensure we can enter a team and find a coach. If the senior club is to remain viable it is vital that we have the junior infrastructure to support it so it you can offer assistance it would be appreciated.

Under 14 Girls

Thank you to Darrell Marr for coaching the girls. Darrell has the girl's best interests at heart and ensures all players are given an opportunity to develop their game. The girls were undefeated in the main season up to Christmas and finished on top. A great effort, well done girls. I would also like to thank the parents who assisted Darrell each week to ensure the game ran smoothly.

Under 10 Boys

Thank you to Dave Wills for coaching the boys during the season. It was Dave's first year coaching the boys, which isn't an easy job, I know from personal experience. Dave was always reliable in his efforts to get to training and games. He was fair to all players, to ensure that they all had opportunities to bat and bowl. The side started the season with 8 players and built up to 12 by the end of the season. The boys were competitive in most games having a number of wins and some close finishes. I thank Darren Patrick for helping Dave on match days and other parents who assisted at times.

Under 12 Boys

With a couple of players going to Under 14 and a few players not returning we started the first grading game with only 6 players. We were able to build this up to 12 by the time the fixtured draw commenced in November and 13 by the end of the season. The boys played in E Grade and as the season progressed, the side showed steady improvement. All players bowled much better line and length and the batsmen played shots and improved their defensive technique. This resulted in the side finishing second on the ladder and ready for a finals campaign.

A comfortable Quarter Final win was followed by a thrilling tie, when all looked lost in the semi final, resulting in a Grand Final appearance. In the Grand Final over 28 overs, which is the normal game, all players were given the opportunity to bat, with most bowling before our opposition passed our score. The children acquitted themselves very well and were a credit to the club with their sportsmanship. I congratulate Mitchell Streiff on winning the batting average with 320 runs @ 41.25 and the bowling average with 7.81 including a Hat Trick during the season.

I would like to thank all the parents for their support throughout what was a very enjoyable year with special mention to Glenda Streiff, Phillip West and our scorer Jenny.
