Our club continued to be a "middle of the field" team last season showing minimal if any change in attitude to be up there with the best sides in Sub-District.
The highs of the previous years under David McNamara had, it appeared to have lost its drive. Players were more inclined to leave it to someone else. Our reliance on younger players was too heavy a burden, resulting in too many middle / late order collapses with the bat which put our depleted bowling line-up under immense pressure to salvage something from the game. In the main, this wasn't achievable. Prior to the first game we had the misfortune to be without two key players, both strike bowlers and both handy with the bat. This put enormous pressure on our second string attack, and more so the experience of Geoff Turner and Steve Goodwin to effectively be our "strike" bowlers, which is hardly a fair ask, given that they are both spinners!
The shining light was Wayne Wunhym who showed his character by batting and bowling as a genuine all-rounder. His coolness in many tight situations should be a lesson for all budding cricketers at our club to look at. His appointment as our captain/coach for the next two years will give Wayne the opportunity to develop our younger players, and resurrect the slump some of our more senior players appear to have gone through. Wayne's experience at both District and VTCA level should be an added bonus for players to build on, after the three solid years put in by retiring coach David McNamara. David's input, both on and off the field was an enormous contribution, and as a great supporter of David, I wish him all the best in his chosen venture for the coming season. Although he is undecided as to what he will be doing at this time, l would like to offer him the "key to the door", and become involved even more so in our club, perhaps in an official capacity should he so wish. Dave, the door is open, we need guys like you to promote our overall value in the community as a viable alternative to minor cricket. Please give it some thought.
All of our teams, right down to the Fourths, l believe, played below their potential during the season. We had on most selection nights a full complement of players to pick from, so numbers weren't an issue, but l think attitude was. Too many times players didn't appear to take the opportunities they were offered, with an indifferent attitude at training, attendance at club run functions and alternative training sessions. This is all noticed at committee level, and as a group the committee spent time, more than it should have, to try and come to terms with "WHY" this attitude had crept into our club. Should any player be able to help us (the Committee) find the answer, l would be only too willing to hear it.
It is a great credit to Mick Streiff and Bill Leane that the hard work of developing "The Nursery" is paying dividends. These two guys have given 100% to our junior development via the Hatch side and Mick taking on the added responsibility of coach of our junior teams.
Things like this don't just happen. They are the result of a dedication to a cause that both Mick and Bill truly believe in. Neither has played cricket at the highest level, but they have a genuine desire to impart what skills and knowledge they do have into a group of enthusiastic kids that see developing their cricket through our club, on a journey to "who knows where"? Perhaps actually playing at that highest level.
Our club has a proud history of developing cricketers that have gone on to greater things. As members, we need to know that this development will be on going; we need to know what role we can play in the longevity of people being committed to the viability of our club.
David McNamara summed it up when he made the comment during his first year as coach "I'm part of the team". A quote that eventually became a bumper sticker for our club.
Are you part of the team?

As you are all aware there were not many functions at the club this year. This was because there seemed to be a lack of support by the players to attend with only a handful willing to make an effort. When this happens year after year it is difficult to plan and run a successful function, and these are vital to assist in the running of the club by providing necessary funds.
However, the ladies did it again, with a successful shopping tour adding with nine ladies up on last year. A great day once again due to the organization of Glenda Streiff, with some new venues attended, things were a little more exciting .We already have ladies confirmed for this years day out.
The Christmas party was well attended but once again numbers were down on the previous year. We must thank Santa for his timely appearance in the Ute and the goodies handed out to the many excited children, also thanks to Bozza for manning the BBQ all night - a job well done.
The end of season function was low key winding up the end of the playing season. Presentation night was extremely well attended once again held at the Northern Golf Club with many juniors and their parents attending and also some Hatch players, parents and coach. Thank you to all who supported the Bat Raffle.
Thank you to Dot and Glenda for taking over the Thursday night duties with feeding the players.
Also thank you to Peter for his support and help with transporting the afternoon teas to the grounds and thank you to our daughter Janene for her help in preparing the afternoon tea with me.

Season 2004-05 promised so much for the cricket club and even though there were some highlights, in the end it was disappointing in terms of win and loss results. An important part of the success of the season is the recruitment and development of many younger players. We have a strong list of young players coming through the ranks coupled with the success of the Hatch Shield this year the future is looking bright.
The pre season training program which was sent out very early to allow for players to plan their attendance was not well attended overall and in the end this ensured we were not prepared for the season when it arrived. Due to this we never really caught up with the pace of the season. The camp was well attended overall and I appreciate the fact that many gave up their time to focus on the season in this manner.
When players do not train regularly they often believe it only impacts their game and performances. This is clearly not the case. If a bowler decides not to train it impacts their game and also the game of the batsmen as it means the batters do not get the quality training they need. This creates a snowball effect on all players and their performances. It also means that many players do not get the opportunity to work on specialist aspects of their game that need attention.
Training numbers overall were consistent and I thank those who attended regularly. I also note the commitments that come up with family and work etc and thank those who took the time to explain their situations to me. To get the best out of ourselves we need to train regularly and properly.
From a coaches point of view it was a trying season from a results perspective. Everyone shone at different times. The challenge is to get it to occur more often. I enjoyed all of your successes and shared the failures with you as well. The club should have won many more games than our results show. After last seasons jump up the championship ladder several places we were not able to improve on this.
It was pleasing to see some younger players play in higher elevens this year such as Robert Hrvatin, Daniel Bailey, Partha Gogoi, Rory Collins, Nick Georgeades, Phil Buultjens and Ben Harding to name a few. Each of these younger players trained hard and often and deserved the success that came their way.
In the First X1 our training was regular and solid. In hindsight we should have spent more time on specialist fielding drills, however the need to fulfil net bowling etc often hindered this. To Ian, Andrew, Steve, Geoff, Wayne, Eric and others who spent time with other players on coaching aspects, thanks as this leading by example really assists the club. There is no doubt there are talented cricketers in the 1st X1. It is a matter of applying the skills we have to the best of our ability. Concentration and shot selection seemed to be the biggest areas to overcome.
The Second X1 were looking forward to a big season after last year's real improvement. The loss of some key players meant that the team did not have the same level of experience needed. Thanks to Ben Rose, Ben Wood and some help from Paco for assuming leadership positions. It was also pleasing to see some of our younger players come along in development and put together some solid performances. The team had some wins that were good for team bonding and it was pleasing to hear the side was coming together late in the year and playing better cricket. It will be important for Greg Shaw, Lester and others to keep improving so, as they can become senior players at the club. Special mention to Rick Donaldson who often performs well and puts team and club before him in many ways.
In the Third X1 we played some good cricket during the year and the highlight was Greg Wood and James Bader getting the boys over the line for a win with 9 wickets down. The team did not go as well as the previous year's final appearance, however there was opportunity given to many players to hone their skills for the future. Players such as Phil, Ben, Chris and others will be better with a year under their belt at the club. To James Bader a huge thanks from me personally. To give your time and passion the way you have for 3 full years with me in a variety of roles, I am genuinely thankful.
The Fourth X1 were ably led by Simon Hewat. Simon has been a great asset in the 4ths helping the younger players and also ensuring some of our more senior players keep running around. It was pleasing to see Mitchell Streiff, Tom Ward, Liam Patrick, Reyce Toll and Tom Manefield playing in this team and contributing well to keep this team on the field and playing some good cricket. Having a 4th X1 is great for our club and I hope the effort in keeping 44 players on the field is continued next year.
Well done of course to all trophy winners.
We have come along way in the last 3 years.
Some of the highlights are:
From having no 4th X1 and a real struggle to keep up numbers in other teams to having 4 teams every week for 3 years solid. The challenge now is to strengthen the playing list even further and win many more games. It is now up to all at the club to build on the work done by many people and take the next step to success. A major Challenge is to get turf facilities more often so as practice is on the necessary surfaces. Each person can play a role in this resurgence even in a minor way.The creation and continuance of the Turner/Browning Shield
The recruitment of many new faces to the club
The continuing building of the junior club and Hatch Shield with Mick Streiff and Bill Leane leading the way.
Development of a reciprocal arrangement with Romiley Cricket Club that has now developed 6 young players.
Preseason camps and post season junior development at Cricket willow now being conducted every year.
In closing, thank you to all involved for their efforts over the last 3 years. Thanks to Steve Goodwin for his personal support over 3 years in playing, Vice Captain, coaching, training and many other areas. I have appreciated the support of all players, committee and supporters over the journey. Special mention to David Lawson for showing faith in me right from the start. Good Luck to Wayne for next season in his appointment as Captain Coach for 2005/06.
A large vote of thanks to my wife Kristie for her support over the 3 years of my tenure at BCC.

Season 2004-05 was a season that promised very much and delivered a mixed bag of results for the 1st X1. The season never really gathered any momentum in the senior eleven and there were very few standout performances.
Having lost a couple of talented junior players to district clubs and a failure to recruit a player to bolster our bowling stocks, the season was always going to be challenging. The addition of Wayne Wunhym to the 1st X1 strengthened the batting order and ensured that the efforts to recruit were worthwhile.
The slower than expected development of some younger players, coupled with unavailability of players who were heavily relied upon, and also inconsistent form from many senior players meant that the results were often below par.
A key focus has been to continually develop younger players and allow them to grow and develop in the 1st X1. Players such as Robert Hrvatin, Will Gardner, Partha Gogoi and Daniel Bailey were all younger players given plenty of opportunity at our club. These players now need to re pay the faith the club has shown in them by applying themselves at pre season training and having best ever years. Glen Richmond is another who owes the club a full year at maximum effort and attitude after a season that promised so much and delivered very little.
From a batting point of view, each week usually had us making an average score. Batting all overs allotted has to be the main aim in senior cricket. We are frequently able to play aggressively and positively and get 2.5-3 an over, however when the team only bats 60 overs or so it puts the pressure on the bowlers to constantly try and win the game. Every game we had 1-2 partnerships that set up the innings and were a pleasure to watch. The batters often could not sustain these partnerships into larger scores and often the following batsmen failed to push the innings up to 200 or more. Often if one player gets 40 or so and 5-6 players get 15-20 it can be enough to win a game.
The shining light was Wayne Wunhym with the bat with well over 400 runs and he finished the year with a great 90 not out to win us the game. Wayne's stroke play and ability to turn over the strike were a lesson to all the batsmen in the team. He has fitted in well and will be a great acquisition to the club long term. Others to mention were Andrew Bonaguro who opened every game and always looked to score. He had several good knocks and has shown now that he can put more consistent years back to back. Ian Hudson batted well in a few games, as did David Lawson. Robert Hrvatin, Will Gardner and Steve Goodwin chipped in a few times and showed they have the technique to play at this level.
In the bowling department the loss of Eric Ruuska for work and family commitments was a huge blow as it put a huge amount of pressure on the other bowlers. Players such as Partha Gogoi, Daniel Bailey, Wayne, Michael Staples and myself shared the load; however we could not sustain consistent pressure at both ends with the newer ball.
The bulk of the bowling workload went to Steve Goodwin and Geoff Turner. These two often had to not only contain the scoring, but also get wickets under pressure. These players were a shining light to the team. Both had solid years with the ball and their own results would have been much better had they been bowling to lower order players rather than top order players who are set. It was great to see Geoff get some rewards after an unlucky year previously.
In the field we had some great days and some average days. Well done to Will Gardner for keeping wicket all year. Developing concentration for the entire 80 overs is the next step to take for Will. His best is very good, the goal is to remove the poor days and perform consistently. Well done to Andrew, Wayne and David Lawson who were all very good in the field all year. The standards were generally good for much of the day each week; we need to remove the 15-minute lapses.
Congratulations to Steve and Wayne on the individual awards they deservedly won for the 1st XI. Both had several good games and got the rewards for the work put in at training and in the middle.
In closing,
From a personal point of view, I have enjoyed playing with the players in the 1st's for the last 3 years. We have had some great wins and also some exciting times. I know we could have done better at times, but that is the nature of the game and the competition. You cannot take your eye off the ball or the contest for one moment. There has hardly been a team we have played in 3 years that we could not compete with if we play at the required level as a group.
Every one of you has shone at different times and I lived every moment of your successes and failures with you. I thank you for all your efforts.
Thanks to Steve for his support as vice captain and to others for their advice along the way. Thanks to my wife Kristie for her support off the field and her understanding towards my role.
A special mention and thanks to the parents, wives and friends who often came down to support us. Thanks to Bill Lawson who attended every game and was always supportive to me as captain.
Good luck to all involved and thanks.

Season 2004/2005 was at all times an interesting and positive experience from my own perspective. I don't think that anyone will step away from the fact that the 2004/2005 season was an overall disappointment, in terms of wins, as far as the club was concerned. Having said that, the 2nd XI managed to achieve a modicum of success.
I, personally, had previously had the responsibility of captaincy (albeit at another club) for many years. The difference this year was the different culture that resounded throughout the team when you are not one of, if not THE, pre-eminent side in the grade you are competing in. Borrowing from Mick Streiff's ethos that the team should at all times aim for respect of the opposition and respect of themselves saw considerable gains for the 2nd XI as the season progressed.
There were numerous positives and long term club benefits that DID come from the season however. Excluding round 13, the side progressively came together as one collective unit. This was the main focus and drive of my captaincy. The main focus of my attention was around individual and team communication - conveying to each individual what was expected of them on a weekly basis and for the season overall. As well as individual concentration of efforts, all found the benefits in playing as one and striving for the same common team goal (even if the common team goal was to ensure competitiveness, gain respect from the opposition and play with a commitment to EACH and EVERY teammate).
Our two wins for the season were the highlight.
Our win over Williamstown which always looked assured after bowling them out for 90 odd was turned into a struggle first as a result of the pending weather and then as a result of panic and our inability of knowing how to close out a win. Fortunately we came through with the win (the clubs first win of the year) and the emotion that was shown post game was the first sign of the team coming together as a collective unit.
Secondly, our win over Sunshine was much more comprehensive. This was probably the first time for the season when everything clicked. It also helped having a quality player like Ben Rose at our disposal.
Surrounding our two seasonal wins were numerous games in which we were highly competitive. We should have beaten both Altona and Noble Park, both eventual finalists, falling short by 10 runs in each game. Additionally, we were right in contests against Yarraville, Werribee and Bayswater.
By season's end, with individual commitment to a common cause, a sense of legitimate friendship amongst the group and the quality of personnel on the ground, we were much better than a team that finished 2nd last.
I would like the opportunity to mention specific individuals and what they managed to achieve or build on over the course of the season:
Paco: a 2 time first XI bowling average winner, Paco at all times provided the foundation for the team as it's opening bat. He will not be too far from winning the 2nd XI batting average and given that he constantly made tough runs this would be deserved. Disappointing for Paco, I cannot count the number of times he made a score of 12 to 20 (it seemed to be every innings) and can only imagine what would have been had 2 or 3 of these starts been a 50, 60 or 70. A great personal friend of mine, he constantly gave his all (despite being physically restricted) and has only the overall interest of the club at heart at all times.
Rosey: Started the year ordinarily when burdened with the captaincy responsibilities, however, when returning to the 2nd XI (after a brief stint in the firsts) he really performed as the Rosey we know. Economical and smart bowling coupled with stoic batting. Had a great season post Christmas. His passion and white line madness can sometimes be misinterpreted.
Bosa: a true gentleman and one of the few individuals who would do anything for the club. The teams leading wicket taker with probably 20 wickets at an average of 11 or 12 he had a stellar year with the ball. Bosa filled any role or responsibility that was asked of him and always without care or complaint. At different stages during the year, Bosa opened the bowling, bowled 4th change and batted at 3. By year's end, Bosa had probably spent the last 7 to 8 games batting at 11. Others may not remember that this was the man that batted at 3 or 4 in the 3rd XI Semi Final team of last year. Bosa always accepted his lot and has only the long-term viability of the club at heart. A huge help and assistance to me over the year as well as often being a rationale sounding board for me.
Rick: The 2nd XI leading seasonal run scorer. Was up and down grades before Christmas before coming up and cementing the number 3 position. Constantly made his 20's and 30's. Now believes that he is good enough in this grade and has overcome a perception that he gets tired around 10 or 15 and "throws it away". Also, like Bosa and Paco, another great individual, as a person, to have in the team.
Nick: One of the nicest juniors I have ever had the privilege of captaining. Has a heart bigger than PharLap and never avoids a situation that may be tough (emphasized by his desire to continue bowling at Mount Waverley when the game was over). He constantly got the 2nd XI the breakthrough and is a real wicket taker. Like Bosa, he unfortunately spent most of the year batting down the order at 10 (though given chances at every opportunity possible). His 26 in the last round against Melton showed that Nick is a legitimate all-round option for the clubs future. Was present at almost each and every training session the club held and has a genuine commitment to improving himself as well as a preparedness to listen.
Shawy: Young veteran of the 2nd XI with over 50 2nd XI games to his credit. Shawy knows that he needs to take greater responsibility for leadership amongst this young and inexperienced team. However, this is a big ask of a bloke that is only 18. Shawy's season was never boring, that can be said. Pre-Christmas, Shawy was struggling for runs and, more importantly, for belief in himself. After a long chat, however, Shawy impressed me immensely by showing a willingness to listen and take on all advice I had for him. His scores of 32 V Werribee, 20 V Noble Park, 28 V Altona and a few other significant contributions with bat and ball were his highlights. Shawy knows this - he just needs to convert his 20's and 30's into 60's and 70's and ensure that his body language is positive and he will become a very effective and dynamic 2nd XI player. Shawy should be a 15 to 20 year player at the club and time should be invested in him to match the long-term benefits we will, ultimately, receive.
Rory: had numerous roles over the season as batsmen/keeper, keeper/batsmen, batsmen and just keeper. He adjusted well to the varying roles and responsibilities asked of him and all roles bestowed upon him were to aid in his long-term benefit. Another year of growth will see Rory gain that extra size, strength and power that will aid his superb technique and ensure that he makes a bucket load of runs. Like Nick, barely missed a training session or club event all year and is one of the young brigade of future stars that we currently have the privilege of having at our disposal. Good young kid with a very promising future.
Partha: Little champion. Was exceptional with both ball and bat when we had the pleasure of having him in our side. Probably has the best bowling and batting averages in the team but will fail to qualify. More importantly, has quickly become an icon not only within the 2nd XI but also at the club as a whole. We cannot afford to lose his services.
Lester: I just love this man. Lester has a quick and intelligent wit and a real "sense of team". Can be devastating and a destructive batsmen on his day and definitely has the ability to be a commanding 2nd XI player. Lester just needs to work on consistency as well as the intelligence of his stroke play. Great bloke - very good cricketer.
I also do not want to neglect the contributions made by Bails, Ang, Steve Phillimore, Robbie Goodwin and Adam Browning (craziest man I have ever met) when they spent time in the 2nd XI.
Additionally, thanks to DMac for your constant advice, thoughts, laps of the oval (hahaha) during the course of the season. I could not have done it without you and the club will surely miss everything you bought to the club, especially your ability to find positives in anything. You will be truly missed but hopefully not lost to the club.
In summary, a disappointing year results wise but one in which I feel the club will look back on as the stepping stone of greater things for Shawy, Nick, Rory and others.
I look forward to watching many of these guys in my first year of retirement next year.

Halfway through this season I was approached by the committee to take over the captaincy for the remainder of the season. I accepted this challenge and really did enjoy it. My role as captain was made easier by the support of the players I had around me. I do believe that all the players did improve as the season went on.
Young players such as Phil Buultjens, Ben Harding, Chris Mullan and Nav Ganesh have shown signs of brilliance be it with the bat, ball or in the field. These four players are the future of the club and no doubt will give themselves every opportunity to play 1st XI cricket.
The introduction of an import this year was fantastic for the club and for the 3rd XI, Danny Oldland was exceptional in the field and made a couple of really handy scores. The arrival of a couple of new senior players to the club was great, Michael Rowlands and Scott Siega. Michael's support throughout the season for the team was invaluable. He took up the challenge of keeping halfway through the season (the keeper we had was just not up to it!). His batting also improving as the season went on making some good scores. Scott Siega a real competitive player, gives it his best shot be it with the bat, ball, or in the field and put us in a position to win in a couple of games.
Then there is Ang Anthakis, Garry Burke-Davis, Greg Wood and Robert Goodwin (when available) these guys just give 100% year in year out and I thank them for their support. The support of the parents, wives and girlfriends at our games was great to see and appreciated by all the players including myself. Special thanks to Moira Mullan for taking on the role of official scorer and doing a fantastic job of it.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Broadmeadows Cricket Club for giving me the chance to captain and play cricket over the last 5 years.

Here we are again at the end of another season, a season the club would like to repeat! However, there were some good aspects to the season with our new young players - Liam Patrick, Tom Manefield, Tom Ward and Mitchell Streiff. There are some champions in the making. Players from last year; Brad Turner, Dean Turner, Garry Burke-Davis, Greg Wood, even a couple out of retirement, Mick Streiff, and Garry Bollard all contributed. More players turned up after Christmas - Ben Mormile, Rick Ahern and Mick Rosacker - the kiwi duo, and Reyce Toll from the Hatch squad. All these players added strength to the 4th eleven, ensuring all elevens played with full teams.
We had a good bowling attack and we made the opposition work hard for their runs. However, our batting let us down, but with some self-belief I think this should turn around next season.
Congratulations to Dean Turner for winning the bowling average - with minimal training, and Mitchell Streiff for winning the batting average - in his first senior season. Congratulations also to Tom Ward for polling well in the player of the year award - a name to watch out for. Also well done to Mitchell Streiff for winning the RM Hatch Competition best player award for the West Group, in his first Hatch year - Keep your eye on this junior.
The season was made a little easier with my official scorer Dot and the support from some of the parents. Thank you to Mick and Glenda Streiff and Darren Patrick.
The future is looking promising with these juniors who have great potential and will start to challenge for positions in higher elevens in the coming seasons.

The 2005 Broadmeadows Hatch team had an extremely successful series. Playing well and being successful are never accidental, particularly in a competition such as the R.M Hatch Shield. A huge amount of planning, preparation and commitment is required. Under the expert guidance of Bill Leane, Roger Pell, Punky Gleisner, Tony Ward & Mick Streiff Broadmeadows was as ready and keen as they could possibly be for a tough campaign.
We started our campaign with training in late August and 5 months and over 25 sessions plus 2 trial games, were part of the commitment and preparation for this year's tournament. All up 34 boys tried out before we eventually finalized a team of 15 which contained 6 players from last year plus 2 top age and 7 bottom age boys ready to take on all comers in the WEST zone.
Our boys also looked a "Million Bucks" with the best uniforms thanks to our sponsors: Hungry Jacks, Coke & The Good Guys Discount warehouses. We also had the best supporters and hosted our visiting teams better than any other club in the comp.
The opening game of the series against, (the eventually undefeated), Melton was our only loss for the initial rounds. The boys fell only 5 runs short, with outstanding performances by Trent Gleisner with 4-16 and Mitchell Streiff with 3-22. Mitchell also scored 16, with Michael Pell making a patient 17.This was a disappointment, as we should have won easily.
The following game saw a solid win over Altona who beat us the previous year, with Mitchell again among the runs with 24 and Vinnie Sundar 26. Michael Pell showed a lot of heart to take 2-9 after having stitches in his ear as a result of a warm-up mishap before the game.
Game 3 vs Yarraville, again a team that beat us convincingly last year saw another strong win. Trent again bowled beautifully with 4-16, while the standout performer with the bat was Ben Kelso who made an outstanding 72 in very hot conditions. This unfortunately meant Ben fell 4 short of Rory Collins high score from the previous year, but everyone saw it as a superb effort.
In the fourth game, against Williamstown down at a wind swept Williamstown by the beach. Mitchell again showed his talent, this time top-scoring with the bat with 27. He completed an excellent match by taking 3-9 with Michael Pell and Vinnie Sundar picking up two wickets each.
The boys looked forward to the game against Werribee who are always extremely strong and 'whooped us " the year before. Mitchell stepped up and bowled with great pace and accuracy to clean up the top order taking 5-9 in a brilliant display of fast bowling. Ben Kelso again had a big day with the bat, scoring 66 no. He was well supported by Tom Ward who made an excellent 22.
The final round robin game saw a narrow victory over Sunshine. Mitchell was again in form taking 3-13. Sam Herbison (our 1st year country boy) showed his potential with a stylish 41 as an opening batsman, with great support from Reyce Toll (22) to create our best opening partnership for the tournament, and Vinnie Sundar saw us home with (22n.o.) This left us with a 5 Win 1 Loss record and 2nd place in West region only surpassed by Melton (6-0) who just beat us.
The team had earned the right to play a quarterfinal against Balwyn, the top team from their zone in the crossover final at Balwyn. Unfortunately we met our match and the opposition proved a bit too experienced and strong. The spirit and effort displayed by the boys was again outstanding, and typified their commitment throughout the tournament .We were convincingly routed for our lowest score 68, which Balwyn passed without the loss of a wicket -a disappointing way to bow out but a valuable lesson for the future. By beating Melton and finishing top, our path to a semi would have been different. Who knows from there? It's good to note that our efforts dwarfed in comparison the results of Brunswick, Coburg, Preston & Yarraville that all try to poach our local talent.
Mitchell Streiff had an outstanding series taking 17-105, as well as making 92 runs to win the Western zone VSDCA R.M Hatch player of the series. Trent Gleisner bowled exceptionally well throughout to finish with 10-85, while Michael Pell's leg-spin was highly successful finishing with 9-57. Ben Kelso had a great series with the bat scoring 163 runs and showing his potential with 2 particularly big innings. Michael Pell's captaincy ably supported by Tom Ward (co-captain) & Ben Kelso (V/Captain) showed the quality young men and truly natural leaders that we have amongst our group. They did an exceptional job.
Our Award winners were
Players Player (voted by the boys): Mitchell Streiff
Hatch Player of the Year (voted by coaching panel): Mitchell Streiff
Best Bowler: Mitchell Streiff
Best Batsman: Ben Kelso
Coaches Award: Michael Pell (all rounder & captaincy)
Encouragement Awards: Jake Pollizi (wicket keeping, determination)
Encouragement Award: Tom Ward (leadership & hard work/ commitment)
Special recognition and well done goes to the players for their effort, commitment and willingness to work hard over the months preceding the championship and during the games.
Also thanks to all the parents, family members and friends who gave such tremendous support to the team before and during the series. A special thank-you to Darlene Carlisle our scorer for her tireless efforts. A big thank-you to Glenda, Kerryn Ward, Annette Pell and all of the mums who dressed up the rooms and provided the biggest and BEST lunch spreads for the team everyday.
Thanks to Roger Pell for 2 years as team manager who has been the glue to make it all stay together and "Punky" Gleisner, who without any fear or favour has been the honest sounding board and odd jobs man to help me a lot. Lastly to the tireless and brilliant Mick Streiff who just works himself into the ground to help the boys - A BIG THANKYOU to all.
The committee especially Soxy who never missed a game to Billy Lawson, David McNamara, Steve Goodwin & Smiley who all dropped into training & games, thank-you too. Early recognition and thanks to Doug Carlisle who has agreed to be Hatch team manager next year 05/06. Our work starts from the Cricket Willow trip in early April.
The Broadmeadows club should be very proud of the Hatch Shield group, and continue to support and nurture the talent in the local area. Croydon won the RM Hatch Shield Final this year and we played exceptionally well against them in a trial game (a point not lost in assessing the quality of our year).
With Mitchell Streiff, Reyce Toll, Jake Carlisle, Ryan Wilson, Nick Linton & Sam Herbison all to come back and lead the way next year plus some quality young boys from this years Nth West semi finalists in Mitchell Shield to be chased, secured & added we are confident that we can go 1 better next year by at least winning the West Region.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT
It doesn't stop there though; on Saturday 9th April, a busload of 40 boys, hosted by the junior coaching team as part of our talent search program went to Cricket Willow. This was our 2nd trip to Cricket Willow in Daylesford and this forms the basis of our Hatch and junior programs. Next season it is critical that senior players get more involved in the junior part of the Club.
For Broadmeadows to GROW and be successful we need to have the strongest junior program in the West. That means at least 15 kids 7-10 doing Milo have-a-go, we field an U/10, U/12 & U/14 team next year. Smiley & Hudda have agreed to coach the New U/16 Team. For the future Broadmeadows has to breed some of its own home grown talent and as a senior player its time to put something back in! So HOW about getting involved? Don't just talk about it at Presentation night & after a few beers, jump on board and have some FUN. The kids will appreciate your support.
Instead of talking about and expecting success it's my opinion that it's long overdue that we as a club take matters into our own hands and create a dynasty. A dynasty that celebrates success and appreciates it because we worked hard to develop, nurture, recognize and reward HOMEGROWN LOCAL TALENT.
I look forward to seeing at least 4 of this years Hatch program, Ben Kelso, Michael Pell, Trent Gleisner, Tom Ward all being good enough to push up into Sub District 2nd X1 cricket to join Rory Collins and see the return of Matt Mickelson next season. All 6 of these guys are future 1st X1 Sub District players and local talent through Hatch in the last 2 years. Lets not forget Mitchell, Reyce, Ryan, Nick & Jake to come through either!

HATCH SHIELD
Bill Leane who coached the boys this season has provided a detailed report. I would like to express my thanks on behalf of the committee for the preparation and time that Bill puts into the boys.
This effort was rewarded with the boys winning five out of their six games before going down in the quarterfinals. Bill has accepted the Hatch position again next year, which is a real positive for the club because he does promote the senior club and encourages players to play with our senior teams.
Bill also organised a trip to Cricket Willow in early April. Approximately 36 children from the local area travelled to Daylesford for the day's activities and the club received good feedback from parents. I thank Simon Hewat, Ian Hudson, Tony Ward, Doug Carlisle and David McNamara for their assistance on the day.
CLUB JUNIORS
The club fielded two under age teams this season, those being the under 10's and 14's. Unfortunately we did not field under 12's due to not having a coach. Some of these boys played in the under 10's and others in the under 14's.
We also struggled to get an under 10's coach and in the end, with the assistance of Simon Hewat at most training sessions, we were able to provide some coaching. I would like to thank Sharon Janineh and Donna Crayden for looking after the boys on match days. Without their help we would have not been able to play and the children would have gone to other clubs to play their cricket.
The under 14's had 15 players to choose from and each week two players were rotated. Although it was at times difficult playing with 13 players, the aim was to ensure everyone got a chance. The team did not win too many matches but we were competitive in a number of games and there were a number of children who showed great improvement as the year went on. Most of the children are still eligible for Under 14's next season so we look forward to this continued improvement. Congratulations to the trophy winners.
Next season we hope to expand to under 16's and Simon Hewat and Ian Hudson are keen to look after the boys. We hope to play some games on turf at Progress Reserve and hopefully this will attract some new players to the club. The future of the club is in a strong junior section to ensure we have players coming through to seniors. If you can help at anytime with the juniors or are interested in coaching please let me know.
MICK STREIFF
