The club competed in the Metropolitan Cricket League for its inaugural season (1973-1974) with 2 teams. The following season (1974-1975) the club was inducted into the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association with 2 teams. The 3rd XI competed in the MCL and our 4th XI was entered in the Coburg District Cricket Association. The first game in the VSDCA was played against Altona at Broadmeadows. The first wins for the 1st XI and 2nd XI came in the 1975-1976 season. The 1st XI beat Balwyn by 2 runs after nearly losing the game outright. We won the next 2 games against Camberwell and Croydon but that was all for the season. The 2nd XI beat Box Hill by 19 runs but nearly lost the game outright. As expected, it was a birth of "fire and brimstone". Wins were rare and off field tensions were high.
In 1975-1976 the club withdrew the 4th XI from the CDCA and entered it into the MCL.
The clubs first premiership was in 1976-1977 with the 3rd XI captained by Ben Ogle.
In 1978-1979 the club entered its 5th XI in the Essendon Broadmeadows Keilor Cricket Association. This only lasted for one season.
The first player to make a century for the club was David Ashen with 108 against Balwyn in 1982-1983. David did it again in the same season with 112 against Ormond.
In 1983-1984 the Under 16's won the premiership.
In 1988-1989 the 3rd XI won their second premiership captained by Graeme Pearce.
In 1991-1992 the Under 16's won their second premiership.
In 1992-1993 the 3rd XI won their third premiership captained by Brian Skilton.
In 1995-1996 the 2nd XI won their first premiership captained by Ron Giles. They went on to win the championship as well.
The control of Sewell Reserve was transferred from the City of Broadmeadows to the City Of Moreland in 1995-1996.
The club entered the technology age of the world wide web in 1998 when our website was created by Bruce Sykes. It has had a few facelifts since that time.
Covers were introduced in season 1999-2000. This has enabled more cricket to be played as the wickets are protected from the elements enabling more results.
In 2000-2001 the club announced its "Champion Team". The team was selected by Bruce Sykes, Mick Streiff and Garry Nolan and comprised the best players since the clubs inception from 1974 to 2000.
From season 1998-1999 to season 2001-2002 the club experienced a shortage of players. This caused us to withdraw the 4th XI from the competition on 2 occasions - in season 1998-1999 and season 2001-2002. In season 1999-2000 and season 2000-2001 we managed to field the 4th XI each week.
The club recruited Peter Goulding from Essendon into a coaching role. Peter a successful district player, was a fine left hand batsman and bowler and fitted in perfectly around the club, he was always passing on knowledge to younger players. Peter also appreciated the social side of the club and liked to lean against the clubroom bar and have a "quiet" one.
The club recruited Lindsay Hathaway from Fitzroy to coach the club. Lindsay a fitness enthusiast and disciplinarian had everyone running laps of the golf course. Especially those that dropped catches and failed with bat and ball in matches. Lindsay's legacy on the club was to engender an attitude of improved performance through fitness, something the club has since built on, with many players still running the mandatory lap of the golf course prior to training.
Others to coach the club were Ken Davis from Prahran and Rex Bennett from Footscray. Rex was the club's first true "fast" bowler and terrorisied opposition sides on the Sewell Reserve wicket. Rex also had the distinction of bowling Footscray to a District pennant just a few seasons before joining us.
Back in this era, John Forder coached the club for two seasons and everyone appreciated, and picked up on John's enthusiasm for fitness, training and playing. John is without doubt the finest opening batsman the club has produced and rates in the top two or three batsman playing in the competition at the moment.
Rohan Buultjens and Yohan Goonesekera coached the club briefly. Both magnificant middle order players with a soft approach shining through. Yohan is the only player to have competed at test level to play with the club.
Another Essendon Cricket Club player to coach the club was Steve Sandri. Steve was, and probably is, a "sports fanatic" and his attitude towards cricket is infectious. Steve's fitness approach also encouraged improved performance through fitness. In addition to his coaching role, Steve was eager on the social side of things, and was always first to social functions. In addition, how could one forget Steve's pre-season training camps at Jan Juc.
Rod Browning has had three stints at coaching the club. Rod, initially from Brunswick progressed through to Carlton Cricket Club in district cricket, returning to Brunswick and subsequently crossing to us as Captain/Coach. Rod also is keen on fitness and still encourages players to improve their performance though fitness.
Mark "Bluey" Leehane also from the Essendon Cricket Club has had two stints at the club. Sandwiched between these stints, Mark returned to Essendon and won the Ryder Medal for the best player in the VCA competition.
Eric Ruuska, who won the RM Hatch Medal for the best player in the VSDCA competion in 1998-1999, coached the club for one season.
Geoff Turner coached the club for one season. Geoff came to Broadmeadows in 1993-1994 from Brunswick, where he had a distinguised career mainly as a batsman.
David McNamara came to the club in 2002-2003 from Seabrook in the Williamstown District Cricket Association and had an immediate impact on the club. David's enthusiasm and attitude was a breath of fresh air. The club was going through a player shortage at the time and David was heavily involved in recruiting players to the club to ensure that we fielded 4 teams in each game.
Coolaroo Ladies Cricket Club became part of the Broadmeadows Cricket Club in 2001-2002 but unfortunately did not fare too well with a shortage of players as the season progressed. This forced them to pull out of the competition.
The Milo Have A Go programme was introduced in 1996-1997. This programme is for children (boys and girls) from the age of 5-10 and is all about having fun. The programme is still going strong.
An under 10 team was formed in 1999-2000. The boys and girls all came from the Milo programme. An under 12 team followed in 2001-2002 and an under 14 team in 2003-2004. The under 12's made the grand final in 2002-2003 and won the premiership in 2003-2004. An under 13/14 girls team was present in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
Russell Ashen was one of a kind. He was never afraid to tease any opposition player, or teammates on occasions, whether on the field or off. Russell did not hit the ball, he struck it with brute force. Underneath the hard skin, Russell was a genuine person.
Ian and Robert Semmens were twins and trouble seemed to follow them wherever they went. Many people could not tell Ian and Robert apart. There was another brother (Alan), he was the quiet one.
Many other characters have come and gone through the club over the years.
Given the club's humble beginnings, the "ups and downs" of the early years, the range of characters that have passed through the club, it is amazing the club has survived.
