Traveling in Australia by Car,
For Backpackers &
Adventure Travelers.

Australia is a large island continent, with a sparse population which lends itself well to the use of the car as a means of transportation. The car provides a level of travelling independence not matched by any other means. Whilst the public transport systems have improved a lot in recent years, they still do not offer a very extensive network of coverage that is demanded by the adventure traveler.

Purchasing and driving a car is made somewhat harder by the fact that each of the five states and two territories have their own laws.Whilst there has been numerous measures made in recent years to make these laws more uniform between the states, there are still many differences. There are differences in speed limits and the cost of registering and driving a car.For the most part the road laws themselves are reasonably uniform to the extent that once familiar with the road laws of one state you will be suitably equipped to handle the rest.Speed limits are usually well marked and rigorously enforced, using the latest in radar technology.

This publication is not intended to be a guide to locations and points of interest as there are numerous excellent guides which cover such things already. What it does intend to offer is a practical guide to buying ,driving and maintaining a car, keeping in mind the limited resources (read dollars ) of the budget traveler. What I hope to do is keep an up to date contact list of phone numbers and addresses which may be of assistance to people wanting to travel in Australia by car.

Running costs /registration costs:

The average annual cost of registration for a motor vehicle in Victoria is $460.If money is tight it is a good idea to buy a car with plenty of registration left over. This can be checked on the registration label on the windscreen on the car.

When you purchase a vehicle in Australia typically you will have to pay a transfer fee to change the name of the registered owner. This is usually about 4% of the market value of the vehicle, depending on the state in which you purchase the vehicle. In reality the ‘market value’ of the vehicle is the purchase price.
