Burnside Country Fire Service currently operates the HAZMAT Response vehicle, a State Support Tender for dangerous substance incidents.

The South Australian Country Fire Service responds to a variety of hazardous substance incidents each year and they all vary in size and complexity, but they do have one thing in common - they all use an enormous amount of resources.

  The following items may assist local Logistics and other Officers in the planning for support of a dangerous substance incident in your area.

Emergency Response

1. Review the resources available to the local HAZMAT brigade;
2. Establish a list of HAZMAT qualified personnel in brigades in your group and region.

Support Equipment

Consider the location and deployment of the following support equipment including:

- Flat bed trucks;
- Tip trucks;
- Front end loaders;
- Cranes;
- Other heavy vehicles and machinery.

Water

HAZMAT incidents involving the decontamination of operational personnel requires significant quantities of water. As a guide, each decontamination process could use as much as 2,000 litres of water. Ensure reliable and safe water supplies are available for the size of any likely operation. Access tankers and static water supplies if required.

  Welfare

HAZMAT incidents usually require responding crews to remain in the field for extended periods of time. The welfare of these crews are very important for successful operations, so consider the following:

- Food - snacks and a hot meal;
- Drinks - fresh water, tea, coffee and maybe isotonic drinks);
- Shelter - tents, natural shade.

Special Resources

Some incidents involving dangerous substances require special equipment and materials. Consider the following:

- Steel (200 litre) Recovery Drums;
- A supply of sand, soda ash, lime and bleach;
- A supply of atapulghite or kitty litter; and
- A fax machine close to the incident.

  Decontamination Zone Layout (Update)
  As illustrated below, the HAZMAT Decontamination Zone is an important part of incident management in dangerous substance incidents. The diagram depicts a current standard for a typical zone layout.
