| (1) Manilla Bridge to
Bridge Walking Track This walking track and native tree planting
are under development. From the Post Office (PO), take the next street
to the west (Namoi Street) turn right and drive down to parking area
near the main bridge. This pleasant walk follows the
river down past the river junction of Manilla and Namoi Rivers to the
Showground. Return trip approx. 3 km.
(2) Manilla Weir From the Post Office head east along
Strafford Street for 1 km turn left on the track located between playing
fields leading to the Weir. In amongst the magnificent gum trees
look for nesting parrots and Honeyeaters. Flocks of water birds can
sometimes be seen on the playing fields.
(3) Warrabah National Park Turn right 1 km north of PO. The
park is of distance 35 km , with 15 km of bitumen and 20
km of gravel road. At the park entrance near the river there are picnic
and camping areas. There are fireplaces, pit toilets and a garbage pit.
The Turquoise Parrot has been observed around the camping
areas. Bush walking area.
(4) Split Rock Dam
Head north on the Barraba Road
for 14.5 kms, turn right, travel 9 kms to main split rock dam wall.
Barbeque and other facilities are available. The walk across dam wall
may reveal some water birds, as out of area birds such as the Osprey
have been recorded here. Look for Honeyeaters in trees below dam wall
. (5) Spring Creek Travelling Stock Reserve (TSR) Turn
left 1 km north of PO into Boggabri road, at 8.2 km turn left in the
Corella road, this reserve is located on the left at 12.8 km, just after
crossing Spring Creek. (After heavy rain check water depth in Spring
Creek before crossing) Enter through gate and walk through to the Namoi
River. In River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) along the
rivers edge can usually be seen Galahs, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and
Little Corellas.
(6) Borah
Crossing Travelling Stock Reserve
From Spring Creek TSR (No5) head west for 4 km then turn off the road
to the left. Enter through gate in amongst Silver-leaved Ironbarks, also
visible are patches of Weeping Myalls. This reserve is located on the
northern edge of Lake Keepit, and is a possible site for observing
different water birds, depending on how full the lake is.
Help look after patches of bush and dirt tracks. Please avoid driving
on dirt tracks after wet weather and take your rubbish with you.
Note: In Travelling Stock Reserves (TSR) the recreational activity of
walking is permitted between sunrise and sunset. Please leave gates as
you find them and avoid interfering with livestock. Generally there are
no facilities. Fires and wood collection are generally not permitted.
Manilla is situated 45kms by road (The
Fossickers Way : SR95) north of Tamworth in north western NSW. Tamworth
is 370kms by road (New England Highway : NR15) from Sydney, Australia and 575kms
from Brisbane, Australia.

(7) Adams Travelling Stock Reserve
Accessible from Borah Crossing to the south (11 kms) or from Borah
Reserve to the north. This area contains good remnants of Grassy White
Box Woodlands with a understorey of native shrubs such as Acacia
deanei and Acacia decora. These shrubs provide an important
habitat area for small birds such as finches which have been observed in
abundance in this locality. Good bird watching ( birding ) spot.
(8) Tarpoly Creek Travelling Stock Reserve
From Manilla take the Barraba road for 25 km, turn left just before
Tarpoly Creek Bridge and the reserve begins after the ramp. Turquoise
Parrot and Plum-headed Finches have also been recorded here.
(9) Borah Reserve (TSR) Borah Reserve is 6.5 km form Tarpoly
Reserve. Cross ramp at southern end of Tarpoly reserve, cross 2 more
ramps to enter Borah Reserve. Pleasant walk to Borah Creek to the east
and a great spot for bird observations. Tamworth Birdwatchers have
recorded at least 149 birds for general area. The Regent Honeyeater has been
seen here and Turquoise Parrot is regularly recorded here. Good
bird watching ( birding ) spot.
(10) Mt Borah Observe birds of the hill tops, dry weather dirt
track requires a good ground clearance, 2 wheel drive vehicle. Off the
Wimbourne Road.
(11) TSR north of town boundary Box woodland just to the north
of Manilla town on the Barraba Road.
Nangahrah Bird Route is 1/2 day trip.
Regent Honeyeater breeding site. Take Speedo readings from P.O., take the Barraba road to the north at 36.6 km turn right
towards Crow Mountain, 44 km cross over top end of Split Rock Dam
(check waterbirds) 47.4 km turn to Woodsreef at Woodsreef 53.4 km turn
right to Bundarra. At 68.5 km stop at Regent Honeyeater sign look
amongst Mugga Ironbarks. Good bird
watching ( birding ) spot.
Woodsreef Proceed as above, at Woodsreef
take the sealed road to left towards Barraba for 2 km until Iron Bark Creek,
pleasant walk along creek, look in River Oaks.Bush walking area.
* Mille Creek TSR, 3.5 km north of
Barraba on the Bingara road.
* Plumpthorpe TSR, 16.5 km west of
Barraba on the Trevallyn Road. Good bird
watching ( birding ) spot.
* Little Creek TSR, is 22.5 km west of
Barraba. Continue on the Trevallyn Road 2km past the Horton Falls turn
off.
* Horton Falls, on the Trevallyn road
as above, on the way to Mt. Kaputar National Park. Check track conditions.

of Barraba Bird Routes Attunga State Forest travel south from Manilla on the
Tamworth road, about 1 km south of Attunga, towards
Tamworth, take the Inlet road. Avoid
the archery area on the left near the entrance to the State Forest. Good
