Our
Day family has bought in the new millennium in grand style by celebrating a hugely
successful reunion in Sumner, New Zealand, - the eventual area the Days
settled from 1849 on. The event was held on January 8th and 9th of 2000
with many events to celebrate both the wonderful achievements of our Days
and also the 150 year birthday of Christchurch. Many thanks to the
organizing committee being that of Annette, Karen and Anne and all their assistants in making this event truly memorable, we

Now to The Story of our Days from Kent, England.
George, his wife Ann Day (née Beeching) and
their children departed for New Zealand on the 'Arab', leaving London 1/6/1841 then again on 15/6/1841
(due to damage to the vessel a short time after setting off) and arriving in
Port Nicholson (Wellington) on 16/10/1841. Being amongst the first
settlers to arrive on New Zealand shores, life must have been extremely
difficult in those early years, but the family leased land at 'Hawtreys Bay',
now know as 'Days Bay' which is the opposite side of the harbour to what is now
Wellington City. Apparently, the original owner gifted the land title to our
Days after the warm hospitality shown to him on a visit with them on a trip to
New Zealand, it is also believed that the family never sold the land, so the question
of current ownership is an interesting one. Things were turning bad for
our Days living in Days Bay, it is rumoured that the Local Maori Inhabitants
made life increasingly difficult for the family, this combined with fighting
amongst tribes nearby and a very destructive earthquake, prompted the family to
head south after hearing of plans of a proposed new settlement in Canterbury, So
the family built their own vessel and sailed to Lyttelton in 1848-49, where they established
a guesthouse in Sumner supplying accommodation for the newly arrived emigrants,
they also established themselves as industrious and well regarded members of this
new community achieving many wonderful feats.
