The Franklins certainly were an intrepid bunch, some
members were amongst the first settlers in the high country and Snowy River
area of New South Wales and had land all around what is now Canberra and adjoining
areas, certainly deserving of the "Man from Snowy River"
acclaim. My line to the Franklins was via Ann, but in Australia she
mainly lived around the Moruya area and indeed is buried there, so I wonder if
she ever had the opportunity to meet up with her other Franklin family
members. The most well known of our Franklin's would be that of the famous
author Miles Franklin whom was actually Stella Maria Sarah Miles
Franklin often referred to as 'Australia's first real author' which was
in fact Authoress as her pen name was a subterfuge in hiding her
gender. Miles books although fiction in general, are a great
insight into life and attitudes of her times although she drew a lot of her
writings from real family, friends and events in her life. Of one special
interest to me is her attitude to politicians and bureaucrats both leading up
to and also after federation. She had nothing but disdain for the two afore -
mentioned, seeing them as pompous corrupt bloodsuckers, my-my,
nothing really has changed these 100 plus years has it !
