Visualisation & Complex Systems

Introduction:

"The paradox is now firmly established that the utmost abstractions are the true weapons with which to control our thought of concrete fact."
Alfred Whitehead (1925)

Hello, and welcome to Craig Moodie's 'Visualisation & Complex Systems'.

In the past few years I have become aware that all my professional life (31 years) I have been pursuing issues to do with the field now labelled "Complexity" (Humans are obsessed with putting things in boxes). In each instance I have had to employ abstract (higher level) ideas to solve/answer the questions asked of me. I know that this phenomenon is not unique to me and is employed by many people. The interesting thing is that most of us are not aware that we do this routinely, or even formally.

The following pages are an attempt to place some structure to some of the concepts that I have employed to solve real world problems. Interestingly, I have started with the subject 'Data' (I have been working on this recently). Doing this has really opened my mind to what is and may be possible. This has provided a metaphorical (conceptual framework) in which to place my other activites & interests.

Data Analysis - Modelling - Simulation - Reliability
Optimisation - Applications - Articles - Software - References

The order in this webpage reflects highlights in the "unfolding of my working life". It is an attempt to distribute some of the knowledge acquired throughout my working life - and to demonstrate some of the capabilities that I can employ to solve problems and assist organisations.

The purpose of this website is:
  • to encourage knowledge transfer.
  • to promote dialogue.
  • to seek out new ideas.
  • to promote the ideas presented.

This web page contains information on some of the latest methodologies for analysing and visualising data. The information presented should be viewed as representing an ENORMOUS EXTENSION to the current norms of data analysis. I wish to raise readers awareness to what is possible.

Some of the sections; modelling/simulations etc, do not represent state of the art. They simply represent my interest and current capability. However, there are ideas and information here that are new to many. I have already developed applications for some of the ideas herein.

Although my working life has been predominantly in the Australian steel industry this information is useful to all businesses and all processes. It employs high school level mathematics and contains no formal proofs. I have not attempted to maintain a consistent mathematical symbolism through out the documents - as the documents represent a series of ideas which were unconnected at the time of development.

I make no general claim to the uniqueness of the ideas contained herein. Where I do make a claim it will be clearly stated. Of course you are free to challenge that claim.

If you have found this material interesting and wish to comment, feel free to contact me. If you wish to provide assistance through the development of these ideas and/or by aiding financially - you are most welcome.
