Dear friends
We invite you
to support and assist our Reference Group in coordinating Project “History of
Migration and Settlement of the Mauritian Community in Victoria”.
This project was initiated by Mr. Richard
Hammerton, Consul General of Mauritius, with the objective of researching and
collating information relevant to the above topic in order to apply for funding
to set up an Exhibition at the Immigration Museum of Victoria. At this stage,
due to time constraints this is now a long
term goal and we are now proposing to host an exhibition and cultural event in March
2003, coinciding with the celebration of National Day. The Golden Age Club will
be hosting the “Mauritian National Day” on Tuesday 11th March 03 at
the Menzies Hall in Dandenong, Victoria. The club has also kindly offered the Menzies
Hall as the venue to host this proposed event, at this point the
proposed dates are Saturday 15th to
Sunday 16th of March 2003. The main theme will be “History of the Migration and
Settlement of the Mauritian/Rodriguan Community in Victoria”.
Such a cultural event will provide the
fast growing Mauritian/Rodriguan Community in Victoria with a “voice” in our
multicultural society in Australia. It will lay the foundations for our
community to pursue the long term goal of having its place in history by
exhibiting at the Immigration Museum.
The success of this project depends on what our community is
prepared to contribute, we are relying on your support and assistance as a
leading social group in our community.
In order to successfully prepare for the proposed Exhibition
and Cultural Event in March 2003, we are seeking the following:
·
committed
volunteers to join the Reference group. People with skills, experience and knowledge in the
following areas: event/exhibition, management, finance, advertising/promotional
activities, administration, Hospitality & Tourism, entertainment (e.g. Sega
dancers, singer).
·
Members of our
community willing to be interviewed about their own experiences.
·
Members of the
community willing to loan us their treasured memorabilia, artifacts, art work,
photographs, documents, videos…
·
Members of our
community willing to help us coordinate, promote and set up the exhibition.
·
Financial
donations from individuals, clubs and businesses. Please note that those who provide this
type of support will be acknowledged and promoted during the event and
throughout the project.
This overall project is also an attempt
to actively involve as many members of our Mauritian/Rodriguan community, to
unite and consolidate the ties amongst various groups, to develop a strong
support network to deal with social, economic, cultural issues as part of the
adaptation and settlement process faced by new migrants and/or students from
Mauritius who are increasingly choosing Australia to pursue further studies.
