Paule Collard Abbeyfield Home

In 1994, a survey among the members found out that some Elderly members of the Club were not too happy living with their growing up grand children and they wanted to live independently, but not by themselves in a flat or a unit. Paule Collard, President of the Club contacted the Abbeyfield Society of Victoria who was helping certain organisations with housing for the Elderlies. They accepted to help with advice and the paper work.

The Club applied to the Federal Government of the time and was successful in obtaining a grant of nearly eight hundred thousand dollars. The Club contributed $55,000. for the furnishing of the Communal rooms and the electrical appliances. The Home has nine bedrooms with ensuite, one guest room, a lounge and dining room, a large kitchen, a laundry, a sunroom which is situated in the middle of the house. The Home is managed by a Committee of four members who meets every fortnight to discuss the menu, make sure the place is kept neat and tidy. The members are all volunteers.

The Home employs two housekeepers; one full time and a part timer who works every weekend. The residents pay 70% of their pension for board and lodging. They have their breakfast, two cooked meals per day and they are free to come and go as they please as long as they give notice to the housekeeper. The first resident walked in on January 6th 1997 and, by the end of the month the Home was full and has never had a vacancy since.

The Mauritian Golden Age Club was formed on April 23rd 1989. Every year, the Club celebrates its anniversary on the Saturday prior to Mothers' Day. The Club was founded because there was an urgent need to help the Elderlies of the Mauritian Community who were very isolated and were becoming housebound.

The Club started with ten friends who wanted to get together now and then and have a good time. Fifteen years, we now have 450 members. We meet every Tuesday, from 10.00AM to 3.00PM at Menzies Hall in Menzies Avenue, Dandenong North (Melway Ref: 90 C1). The members play domino, lotto, cards and exchange news etc. Educational talks from outside organisations such as the CFA, the Drug and Safety Committee, Chiropodists, Dentists, the Police Force, Chemists and many others are also given to members.
