Some say the"torpedo" or "the egg soda" bottle was designed and patented in 1803 by William Hamilton of Dublin. Others say Nicolas Paul of London invented it.
The thought behind it , was to have a bottle that couldn't be stood up, thus allways keeping the cork wet stoping it from drying out, the same idea behind wine bottles being laid on their sides.
The strange merging of a Codd and a torpedo bottle produced a very unique outcome.
It's posible it was Hiram Codd's attempt to "go after" the torpedo market, by trying to get the staunch supporters of the torpedo to use the new codd bottle, but retaining the traditional pointy base bottle.to put it amother way it was a marketing ploy to hit his the largest competitor.
Please note:
Egg shaped bottles have been around since the midd 1700"s.
