DMT history

Some of my Client's stories:

Introduction:

Whilst I am pleased and proud of the fact that most of my clients have gained enormously from my practice, there obviously have been some people I couldn't help. My records indicate a 97% success rate and the remainder are a combination of people who fall into three categories. One such category are those who had ailments which simply, were not related to muscular problems. Another are those who didn't follow-up on treatment because it hurt too much and the third were those who did not allow enough pressure to be applied during the first treatment and, as a result, didn't get the necessary relief to encourage them to return for follow-up treatment. Therefore they received no benefit. In any case their attitude was that "it hurt too much and I'll never go there again" or "that was a waste of time, there's no point in continuing."

The remaining 97% obtained varying relief and I will list a few of interest. I will use fictitious names to protect the client identity.

Mrs. Dental Accident - This lady had all but lost the use of her right arm. There was little blood circulation and her hand was a greyish colour, always cold and she had no feeling in the hand. Her condition had resulted, twelve months previously, from a dental procedure that required an intravenous anaesthetic into her arm. She reported that the arm swelled badly and resulted in her present condition. She had been told that this was a result of an allergy to the anaesthetic and that she would never regain full use of her hand, because the check valves in the veins had been damaged. Whilst working on the forearm muscles, during the first session, I began to form an opinion. What I believed had happened was that someone had missed the vein and injected the anaesthetic directly into the muscle tissue causing muscle spasm…the muscles were adhered and felt like bone. At the end of the session she regained some feeling in her hand and, whilst this only lasted a couple of days, was very promising. She was pleased to report that "she had gone home that day and pinched people, simply because she knew she could, with some control over the pressure applied". To cut this story short, after only a few sessions she was able to accept a commission to do a portrait of someone. Her main thing in life, which she had been denied for twelve months, was that she was an artist (painter).

Mrs. Shoulder Restriction - This lady came to me with much restriction in her shoulders. She was unable to raise her arms above her shoulders. When she returned for her second session, I greeted her at her car and asked how she had been. She replied with a smile on her face "I don't know why anyone would come back to you, I was sore for three days". When asked why she didn't cancel her second session, she said; "I haven't been able to do this for years" whilst simultaneously raising her arms, vertically above her head.

Mrs. Migraine/Menopause - Brought to me by her partner, she had been suffering migraine and associated vomiting for weeks. She had been given a prescription by her doctor the day before, but thought she would try DMT first. She also had a complexion problem and hot menopausal flushes, for which she was receiving hormone treatment. After one treatment, the headaches were gone and after three treatments reported that she felt like a new person; no headaches, improved complexion, and no hot flushes. She periodically returns for treatment to ensure few recurrences.

The origins of deep muscle therapy.

The ancient Egyptians, according to some sources, used to practice DMT and in some Asian countries, DMT has been practiced for centuries; the art of massage using the feet and body weight, is a form of DMT.

In the western world, a Canadian lady by the name of Mrs. Therese Pfrimmer in the 1940's developed the technique while administering massage therapy on her own legs, which had become paralysed. She had been told that she would never walk again, because the nerves in her legs were dead. She couldn't accept that her nerves were dead and believed all along, that the problem was in her muscle fibre. She worked on a cross-muscle fibre principle and called her work Deep Muscle Therapy. Having cured herself, she began helping others and because of her success, opened a number of clinics and trained others in the art, to carry on her good work.

In the past 50 years, this therapy has changed the lives of literally thousands of people.

It is one of the fastest growing techniques in the world today. Her discovery, which led to the reversal of her own paralysis, consists of an extremely detailed, total body cross-fibre treatment which causes corrective changes in the muscles on a cellular level.

Deep Muscle Therapy works for the correction and prevention of serious muscle conditions such as ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson's, Cerebral Palsy, brain injury, and stroke. It has also been effective in alleviating sports injuries, trauma, occupational stresses, arthritis, fibrositis, backache, neck tension, and chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation and circulatory problems, to name a few. Combined with traditional treatments of these conditions, it offers an added edge that can speed recovery or promote maximum improvement where traditional treatments leave off. By releasing adhered muscle before playing sports, athletes have far fewer injuries, such as torn ligaments

How Deep Muscle Therapy Works:

Tight, adherent muscles are the cause of many ailments due to their involvement in restricting the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid and by the entrapment of nerves in soft tissue, and in the impairing of normal structural alignment. To illustrate the point; the effect of a damaged or adherent muscle can be comparable to a garden hose with a kink or bend in it. When this occurs, the normal flow of water is blocked and the garden is not watered sufficiently. When a similar disruption in muscle and soft tissue occurs, the normal functions of the blood, nervous and/or lymphatic systems are diminished or blocked, and tissues and organs supplied by these systems are not properly serviced. musclepic

Deep Muscle Therapy is designed to cause corrective changes to the damaged or adherent muscles and the adjacent soft tissues. The resulting improved circulation causes changes at the cellular level, not only to the muscle involved, but also to any soft tissue that may have been affected by the impaired circulation. Where muscles have become "dry," Deep Muscle Therapy brings lymphatic fluid toward the muscle cell. The lymphatic fluid acts as the liquid medium required for osmosis and cellular exchange on the capillary level.

Deep Muscle Therapy relieves entrapment of nerves, and it also aids in removing toxins and congestion that may have accumulated in damaged muscles and soft tissue, thereby reducing oedema and inflammation, as well as reducing pain. It promotes detoxification on a cellular level, thus improving cellular function. It softens hard fibrous muscle which restricts joint range of motion, thereby "throwing off" the body's proper structural alignment.

Deep Muscle Therapy provides a dramatic form of passive exercise for those who have been injured or ill. Combining DMT with traditional treatments of specific conditions or diseases offers an added edge that can speed recovery and promote maximum improvement where traditional treatments leave off.

How Deep Muscle Therapy Helps the Body Systems?

Below is just a partial list of ways that Deep Muscle Therapy has shown itself to be effective to overall health:

1. Muscular system: Corrects damaged muscles and separates adherent fibres: Allows nutrients and medicines to reach the cellular area and wastes to be removed; Softens hard, fibrous muscles and relieves pain; and Relieves congestion and inflammation

2. Skeletal system: Clears deposits and debris from old bone injuries; Restores damaged ligaments and tendons at bone attachments; Improves joint range of motion; Enhances effectiveness of chiropractic and osteopathic treatment; and Allows for improved posture and stronger stance.

3. Nervous system: Releases entrapment of nerves in soft tissue; Reduces inflammation and congestion along nerve pathway (neuritis, radiculitis, neuralgia, etc.); Relieves neuromuscular conditions; and Improves conditions resulting from brain injury.

4. Integumentary system; Improves circulation to the skin, thus moisturising dry, scaly skin and improving tone; Reduces bedsores, acne and other skin eruptions; Excellent for geriatric skin problems; and Regular treatment can improve the appearance of cellulite.

5. Endocrine system: Opens up dry muscle cells so endocrine hormones can reach their end sites through improved circulation.

6. Cardiovascular system: Contributes to the improvement of sclerotic blood vessels; Relieves congestion in chest for congestive heart patients; and Improves general health so that heart patient can maintain self through exercise.

7. Lymphatic system: Releases entrapment of lymphatic vessels; "Drains" sluggish nodes; and Improves integrity of lymphatic blood vessel walls.

8. Respiratory system; Releases restrictions in the muscles that aid in breathing; Promotes postural improvement thereby reducing "crowding" of lungs; and Removes old congestion in lung/rib area.

Common conditions where Deep Muscle Therapy has proven effective.

Have you a condition that's not listed here? Need more information on a condition? Contact Colin through: SWC-Enquiries Form

-Arthritis
DMT moves toxins out of the muscles and joints, moving out oedema, and inflammation, as well as pain. It often improves the range of motion of the joints.

-Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
DMT moves congestion from the median nerve area of entrapment.

-Constipation and Digestive Distress.
DMT improves tone in limp, flaccid muscles of the colon wall contributing toward improved peristaltic action.

-Headaches.
DMT releases adherent factors in the neck, improving blood flow to the brain, as well as relieving a major cause of headaches: stress.

-Heart Problems.
DMT relieves congestion from around the heart and improves the tone in muscle walls of the blood vessels, as well as muscle pathways leading to the heart.

-Joint and Muscle Pain.
DMT releases adherent muscles so they can once again freely glide over one another. This also relieves the pain producing build-up of metabolic substances within the muscles. It improves range of motion and lubrication within the joints.

-Neck and Back Pain.
DMT releases adherent back and neck muscles, restoring their ease of motion and reducing the incidence of spasm. It helps spinal adjustments to hold more successfully.

-Occupational Injuries.
Occupational injuries often result from overuse of a muscle in a repetitive movement, causing muscle strain, dryness and restriction. DMT restores the muscle's blood and lymphatic flow so it moves freely and without pain. Inflammation caused by cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) or repetitive strain injury (RSI) can be dispersed in the same way.

-Paralysis.
DMT opens muscular pathways so that fresh oxygenated blood can reach muscle cells thereby improving the function of the nerve in the motor unit. (If the muscle is too dry, the supply of fresh blood is inadequate, contraction cannot take place, and the nerve seems non-functional.)

-Poor Circulation.
Often damaged muscles deep in the body will press on blood vessels impairing blood flow. DMT helps cold hands and feet, dry skin, varicose veins, old injuries that are slow in healing and other circulatory problems to improve.

-Sciatic Pain.
Tension or spasm in the pyriformis and/or psoas muscle, resulting in entrapment of the sciatic nerve often causes sciatic pain. DMT resolves this irritation along the nerve pathway in the specific areas of entrapment.

-Sports Injuries.
DMT releases muscle restrictions thereby helping to balance the stress on weight-bearing joints. It also improves joint range of motion and reduces spinal subluxation. DMT contributes to the effectiveness of chiropractic, orthopaedic and sports medicine treatment effectiveness. The cross-fibre technique has been acknowledged in sports medicine to be effective in hastening recovery and giving the athlete the added edge.

-Tendonitis, Bursitis.
DMT reduces inflammation and congestion surrounding bone, cartilage, joint capsule, joint spaces and bursae. It isolates and relieves restrictive muscle, which is pulling on the joint and causing pain in the soft tissues.

-Trauma and car accidents.
When injuries don't heal in the normal time frame, there is often underlying muscle distress, resulting in a cycle of chronic pain. DMT interrupts the chronic pain cycle with corrective muscle work. Joint limitations resulting from old fractures can often be corrected.

-Whiplash
Whiplash can cause damage to the minute fibres of the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the neck and back. It often results in congestion and tension in the sub-occipital and sublingual/throat muscles. DMT removes the congestion and tension from these injured areas, relieving restricted movement and pain.

-Other Common Conditions
Deep Muscle Therapy has also been demonstrated to aid in the improvement of:
-ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor neurone disease)
-Brain Injury
-Bell's Palsy
-Growing Pains (Benign limb pain of children)
-Cerebral Palsy
-Fibrositis and Fibromyalgia Syndrome
-Lupus
-Memory Loss
-Multiple Sclerosis
-Muscular Dystrophy
-Neuralgia
-Neuritis
-Parkinson's
-Polio
-Scoliosis
-Strokes
-TMJ (now known as TMS)- Temporal mandibular Joint Syndrome.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Is DMT just another massage technique?
A. No. Rather than being another technique of massage, DMT is a specialty unto itself . . . a comprehensive system of corrective cross-tissue movements designed to aid in the restoration of damaged soft tissue in the entire body. DMT is the foundation upon which other troubleshooting techniques may be added. DMT therapists are viewed by doctors as "specialists" in the field of muscle therapy.

Q. Why is DMT considered the foundation for troubleshooting and corrective massage?
A. Because it stimulates corrective changes on a cellular level. Once the body begins to heal itself, it responds well to additional troubleshooting such as myofascial release, positional release and trigger point work.

Q. What is the difference between DMT and regular massage?
A. Massage manipulations work with the superficial layers of muscle and move body fluids. DMT releases adherent and fibrous muscle conditions existing in deep layers of muscle. DMT actually corrects muscles and other tissues that have become damaged.

Q. Can DMT be incorporated into Swedish Massage?
A. No. Mixing the two in the same treatment would nullify the corrective system of DMT thereby cancelling potential results. The two differ dramatically in concept and execution of technique. Swedish Massage is designed to flush fluids toward the heart; DMT to bring them into the cell. Swedish Massage is designed for relaxation; DMT for correction.

Q. Is DMT the same as Deep Muscle Massage or other forms of deep tissue work?
A. No. Deep Muscle Massage follows the principles of Swedish Massage and is basically the same technique done more deeply. DMT is an exacting series of cross-fibre movements employing principles of muscular restoration.

Q. Does DMT combine well with chiropractic and osteopathic treatments?
A. Yes! Since the skeletal and muscular systems function together, combining DMT with chiropractic and osteopathic creates a synergistic relationship. Treatment of damaged muscles aids chiropractic and osteopathic adjustments to the skeletal system, allowing them to "hold" longer and better. Damaged or impaired muscles often cause skeletal misalignment. DMT can give help at the source of many structural problems.

Q. Does DMT combine well with physical therapy?
A. Yes! The detailed handwork "inside" the muscle bundles performed with DMT works toward restoring the health of the muscles, thus contributing to positive results in physical therapy.

Q. Does "deep" mean painful?
A. Both Yes and No. Most people say "it's a good hurt." In other words, if you have a problem area, it will hurt to some degree to have it worked on, but it feels "right" to have the problem addressed. Also, "deep" doesn't necessarily mean "hard." With the proper technique, muscles deep in your body can be reached with a minimum of pressure.
You are always in charge!
