March 29 - Back Brace Update & Hernia Post-op Check
On the way to Daria's post surgery check for her umbilical hernia repair, we called into the manufacturer of Daria's back brace. We had to drop off the x-rays we had of Daria's spine to allow them to continue making the brace. Actually these are the only x-rays that have been taken of Daria's spine, but unfortunately they were taken back in May 2000, and are of poor quality. Thankfully we did not have to get new ones done at this stage.  The specialists at the centre also physically examined Daria's spine and decided that the brace would only come to just above the top of her kyphosis.  Initially were advised by the spinal specialist at this hospital that Daria would require a full brace for the entire height of her back (possibly including her shoulders), but thankfully this is not the case. The brace will be fitted on the 30 April.

Next we went to the paediatric surgeon for Daria check of her surgery site for her hernia.  The surgeon was happy with the operation and the way in which Daria's wound had healed. One of the stitches has not dissolved properly and has caused a tiny, red lump at the end of the operation wound.  This will "fester" for a couple of months and then the stitch will dissolve as it should have in the first place.  Daria does not need to be seen again unless there are any further complications (or another hernia develops). The difference in the appearance of Daria's belly button region in nothing short of marvellous. Her belly button actually looks "normal" and the surgeon has indicated that it will only continue to improve.
Daria's hernia prior to surgery. This photo was taken when she first woke up in the morning with her lying down and with an empty stomach. As you can imagine when her tummy was full and she was standing, it was even more prominent.
