WHAT is Amateur Radio? · Communicating from home or vehicle, local or overseas. · Experimenting – simple to very complex – your choice. · Making friends – contacts with like people worldwide. An interesting and rewarding lifelong hobby.
WHO is a Radio Amateur? Any person who uses radio equipment for: · Local or worldwide communication with other Amateurs. · Experiments in radio, television or digital communications. Voice links via repeaters or satellite, even ‘moonbounce’. All must use bands/frequencies allocated for Amateur use.
WHO can become a Radio Amateur? · Men, women and teenagers – there are NO age limits. Able and handicapped from all walks of life. Amateur radio provides fun, enjoyment and fellowship, and a great sense of achievement and personal satisfaction.
HOW to become an AMATEUR operator. · To obtain an Amateur Licence you must demonstrate you have the required knowledge in the following areas: 1. THEORY 2. REGULATIONS - both are compulsory for all licence grades. There are THREE levels of Licence - FOUNDATION, STANDARD & ADVANCED, each has privileges and access to designated bands, expanding with competence. Anyone can listen on amateur bands now, but to transmit you must have a LICENCE issued by the ACMA
The Wireless Institute of Australia ( www.wia.org.au/ ) has published a full colour book ‘Your Entry into Amateur Radio – The Foundation Licence Manual’; setting out all that the candidate needs to know to qualify for the Foundation Certificate of Proficiency. Examinations are conducted by Accredited Assessors who can give you a result on the same day you sit for the examination.
