DIFFERENT TYPES OF MESH
What is mesh.
Originally hernias were repaired by the use of sutures and staples. The trend now is to use various forms and mesh. There are over twenty different styles mesh and each is used in a specific way. So that you can see some of the mesh types Dr Phillips uses, displayed on this page are a number of different types of mesh used and simplified diagrams of how a particular type of mesh is used in the repair:
The Procedure
MAKE A SMALL INCISION:
In an average size patient, an incision of 3 to 4 centimetres is adequate.
FORM PREPERITONEAL POCKET:
Blunt dissection is used to enter the preperitoneal space.
POSITION THE KUGEL HERNIA PATCH:
The patch is folded and inserted into the previously created pocket. The "memory recoil spring" enables simplified positioning.
SECURE THE PATCH AND CLOSE:
The wound is closed by reapproximating the transversalis fascia incorporating a small portion of the mesh patch in the closure.
