MULLER 82

NOTES FOR CAVE SURVEYORS

  1. IN THE CAVE
  1. Record all survey station labels when recording data. See section C for the numbering system.
  2. Read Suuntos to the nearest degree and don’t forget the clinometer sign. Read the tapes to the nearest 0.1m. Main traverse should be done with compass, clino and tape. Use pace or tape and compass surveys for smaller side passages.
  3. Record LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN data(<,>,^,v) for each station in the main passages. The convention is LEFT is the distance from the survey station to the left hand wall when facing the direction of unsurveyed passage. These distances may be estimated.
  4. 4. Keep Suuntos dry. Carry in a waterproof container when not in use.
  5. Leave a survey station marker or a cairn at junctions and ends of surveys if another party will have to come back to continue the survey later.
  6. Survey as you explore.
  7. Use the leapfrog method if you like. This method is recommended for main passages. The survey note books are designed for surveying in one direction only. Leave every second data line blank to ensure survey station labels are properly recorded when using the leapfrog method.
  8. Note on sketch map all pitches and climbs.
  9. Name as many features as possible while surveying.
  1. BACK IN CAMP
  1. Put Suuntos in desiccator.
  2. Transcribe data into survey data book. Please rule columns. Staple original data sheets and store in folder.
  3. Calculate rectangular coordinates and plot plan of survey.
  4. Write up cave description in log book (data book in small camps).

a) Date, party members and area explored should be recorded before you go underground so people know where you are.

  1. Description of cave surveyed. The following aspects may be relevant.

Passage Type - vadose, phreatic, breakdown, approximate sizes.

Pitches and Climbs - size and belay details, tackle required.

Streams - approximate flow and depth, where does the water come from and go to, evidence of flooding

Decorations - type and location.

Names of features - especially chambers and junctions.

Bug life - what and where.

5. If a new cave or shaft describe the location of the entrance. Draw a sketch map showing location. If possible survey to the entrance and place on major map of area. Allocate an MR number and record in the data book. See section D for numbering policy.

  1. SURVEY STATION NUMBERING SYSTEM

A unique survey station numbering system is to be used to assist in the computer reduction and plotting of the data. A five figure system is to be used.

Eg B2700 B2701 B2702 etc

B- refers to the Suunto set number

27 refers to the day of the expedition. Day 01 is 1 July 1982.

If you need more than 100 survey stations in a day change the expedition day to an alpha numeric. For day 27 go to BC700, BC701 etc. Use A=0, B=1, C=2 and so on.

Do not use an unidentified compass except in an emergency. Contact Dave Martin for a compass identification number. Both letters and numbers will be used for compass identification.

MAMO V LOG

(note found on top of page) Frieda. Base BU

THURSDAY 29th July

Trevor W (TW) and Rauleigh W (RW) come with 4 porters from Mamo 4 to cut track to MR1000 and select site for chopper pad.

FRIDAY 30th July

???

SATURDAY 31st July

???

SUNDAY 1st August

Barry W (BW) and Steve B (SWB) visited pad site to check on porters progress. Pad laid by 1400 hrs. Clearing of trees still in progress.

MONDAY 2nd August

Barry (BW) returned with porters and load of gear. Steps constructed out of doline and pad completed.

TUESDAY 3rd August

Rauleigh (RW) and Barry (BW) arrived at 9:30 am in the rain. Spent day shifting rocks and porters did much needed work on track. Porters returned to Mamo 4 leaving Barry (BW) and Rauleigh (RW) to their own resources with a pile of firewood.

WEDNESDAY 4th August

The chopper flew over at 7:00 am and all hell broke loose. Had people and gear arriving at a rapid rate of knots. The whole day was spent with people organising camp and transporting gear from the helipad. By nightfall everyone had somewhere to sleep and the camp was well on the way to being "organised".

THURSDAY 5th August

Barry (BW), Rauleigh (RW) and Rolan (RE) as one party and Tony (ToW), John (JW) and Dave (D?) as a second party went to rig the pitch at the "end" of Kananda Pugwa. The top of the pitch was "heavily" gardened as many loose rocks were present. Meanwhile Tony (ToW) traversed onto a bridge above the pitch, belayed by John (JW). With a choice of ways to rig Barry (BW) thought that down the slope would be OK, so he went ahead making the rebelays to the head of the main 25m drop. Rauleigh (RW) came down surveying as he went. Barry (BW) called up that the cave continued down a further pitch. Rauleigh (RW) joined Barry (BW) and Rolan (RE) came to the top of the pitch. While Rolan (RE) was standing on a large block at the head of the pitch it fell down the pitch rolling straight at Rauleigh (RW) who was in the side passage on the other side of the chamber. It stopped only 1m from his feet - it seems they even chase you up side passages !! Rolan (RE) descended and then Tony (ToW) decided that his location offered a better hang than Barry's (BW) "loose jug handle". So the top pitch was re-rigged. Meanwhile Barry (BW) had used the end of the rope to descend the second pitch calling up once more that the passage continued. With the rope pulled up for re-rigging Rolan (RE) went to rig the second pitch with our spare rope and managed to throw the rope down the pitch without hanging onto the end !! Goodbye rope ! So we waited until the first pitch was re-rigged. Down the second pitch the surveying began in earnest. Barry (BW), Rolan (RE) and Rauleigh (RW) mapped about 20 legs before Tony (ToW) followed by John (JW) arrived and three tapeworms were measuring as fast as Rolan (RE) could read the instruments. Reached the top of the third pitch where it opened into a large chamber with the sound of a stream. We ate lunch and waited for Dave (D?) who was last down the first two pitches. We sent him down first. The chamber was very large (???m) and contained a stream dropping down a waterfall (???m) into a rift in the "floor" and emerging in a stream canyon down a 20m pitch. One party surveyed around one wall while the other searched for the other wall. Tony's (ToW) party found a streamway and surveyed about ???m upstream to where several waterfalls were encountered. Barry's (BW) party mapped across the "bridge" 1/2 way down the waterfall and up the huge scree slope which sloped up to the roof, the end. On the way out the rope on the third pitch was severely abraded through a protector. This rub point did not appear that bad but obviously it was. John (JW) removed this "edge" with a hammer and re-rigged the rope. Everyone was out of the cave by about 11pm. Time underground 12 hrs. Passage mapped ???m. We named the large chamber Dragons Reach.

Derek Hobbs (DH), Anne Wright (AnW) and Hugh Harley (HH) set out west examining ??? dolines. A number of dolines were examined. Some were already explored and some not. None of the unexplored dolines looked very promising ( A 10m shaft with stream in bottom was found to the North and East of Sinking Streams window ). Pushing further west we passed the Sinking Streams (MR1001) entrance. On the western edge of the Sinking Streams walk in entrance we found a small resurgence cave. We returned to camp.

FRIDAY 6th August

Derek Hobbs (DH), Anne Wright (AnW) and Hugh Harley (HH) returned to the resurgence cave (MR1004) in the Sinking Streams walk in entrance (MR1003) and explored and surveyed the cave. The cave has two forks from just inside the entrance. We followed both forks till they both ended in rockpiles. Surveyed about 130m of passage. The cave (both forks) are very well decorated. After this Anne (AnW) returned to camp and Hugh (HH) and I (Derek) (DH) started to survey MR1003, but stopped about 100m inside when we encountered a 6m waterfall. We will return tomorrow to finish the survey.

Rolan (RE), Tony (ToW), Al (AW), Julia (JJ) and Neil (NeH) descended the 60' pitch at the southern end of the large chamber. This led to spacious stream passage, which was surveyed for several hundred metres down some short pitches to where what is presumably Tuesdays main stream reappears as a waterfall. The passage continued down further short drops, and was still going strong when we turned back at -333m. A rise in water levels made for an exciting exit.

Rauleigh (RW), John (JW) and Paul (PD) surveyed a lead from the crawlway at the base of the second pitch. The crawl opened into walking passage to a chamber with a high aven. This chamber which we named the Mud Chapel had two leads. The first became chocked with rockfall after about 20m. The second from the end of Mud Chapel was a crawl over gypsum for about 40m to a rift in the floor. A squeeze led to the top of a 5m pitch. Having no rope we returned to the main passage to Dragons Reach and mapped a high level lead which continued for about 200m in walking passage to an obvious stream sink in the floor and a crawl which continued. Calling it a day we headed for camp. Time underground 6 hours, passage mapped 225m

SATURDAY 7th August

Barry Were (BW), Anne Wright (AnW) and Derek Hobbs (DH) accompanied by Opa and Undiabe set off to prospect to the west in search of the "Big Hole". We followed a trail heading west along the ridge to the south of the Sinking Streams entrance. The "Big Hole" was not located. During the return trip Opa cut a Pandanus Palm for us to sample the inner shoots and collected mushrooms and one large white grub for dinner.

FIG 001

Rauleigh (RW), John (JW), Paul (PD), Brian (BE) and Tony (ToW) returned to the undescended 5m pitch from the previous day. The pitch dropped into large passage going two directions. We mapped downstream (dry passage) to a pitch (17m) into an active streamway. Tony (ToW) and Paul (PD) were able to find a passage which led into this streamway and Tony (ToW) was able to identify it as the upstream riverway from Dragons Reach. We mapped all of this upper level about 250m in all. With no leads remaining we returned to camp for Jooles (JJ) birthday party. Time underground 5 1/2 hours. Passage mapped 258.2m

SUNDAY 8th August

Henry Shannon (HS) solo effort. As a check on a guesstument of the Mamo 5 camp location I went up to the chopper pad and along the obvious ridge going 200m at 300o then after hearing running water and went north for 100m. To intersect a substantial creek running E-W just about at the sink, which has 3 separate wet entrances and several potholes down to water further down the fossil streamway, the last being a slot Tomo with a bridge across it orientated 020o, about 15m deep. Back at camp I checked with the Wright (AnW), Harley (HH), Hobbs (DH) party to accertain that it was different to the MR1001 - 1004 streamway. I also revised my previous idea of our position to take into account of the small size of the camp doline and the valley trend going to the west - quite a rare feature on Mamo. My current guess valid for perhaps 12 hours is 467793. The new streamsink interrupts flow which may once have gone to the big doline north of the chopper pad.

[The following entry may have the wrong date, Dirk Stoffels, Sydney 05/09/88] Henry Shannon (HS) solo (Repeat to get feature ??? straight). After spending much time ??? the ??? I thought it best to test out my ideas by actually going out into the rain for a look around. Going up to the chopper pad and looking around there was enough to cause scrapping of one hypothesis and start on another which would take into account of the E-W karst valley extending West from the Mamo 5 camp. Also I poked along the ridge extending NW from the helicopter pad. I cut short this effort when I heard water pouring off to the right. I then went down to where the noise was coming from and found a stream sink and associated dry valley with tomos : roughly as follows,

FIG 002

(a) The stream splits into 3 with 3 wet crawlway entrances name pulaps Certenu's Kennels ??? MR1016, MR1017, MR1018.

(b) Tomo 2-3m deep easily climbed, light from other holes visible upstream, no light and a lot of noise MR1019.

(c) Very deep slot tomo MR1020.

(d) Even deeper slot tomo, with bridge 10m down and waterfall coming out of obvious cave passage and plunged down out of sight MR1021.

David Waters (DW), Hugh Harley (HH), Anne Wright (AnW) and Derek Hobbs (DH) set out to survey from C2100 - the cairn in the walk-in entrance to Sinking Streams (MR1003) down to MR1001. We surveyed this but we were unable to tie it in to the survey that begins here and heads down MR1001 and into the main cave (MR1000 etc). We then surveyed up a side stream entering into MR1001 on the south east side of the doline. We penetrated 61.5m (upstream) up this stream passage, and entered a small chamber with a rocky floor. On the far side of the chamber there was a 3m waterfall that we were unable to climb. We returned to camp.

Julia (JJ), Paul (PD), Ian (I?) and Rauleigh (RW) went to map in the riverway from M3858. We lost about 20 minutes in Dragons Reach finding the fourth pitch, but they got moving on the 5th pitch of 3m Ian (I?) had a rapid abseil from the top, abseiling off the end of the rope into the plunge pool with quite a splash - but his carbide light didn't go out. Well done Ian (I?) ! We mapped from M3858 without Jooles (JJ) as she thought the water was a bit high. Upon reaching the 10m pitch we found that Neil (NeH), the last person down had clipped the rigging crab above the pull in float rope. As the rope was tied off at the bottom we could not get onto the rope. Rauleigh (RW) was volunteered to climb out and get the head of the rope. This achieved we surveyed on until we met Neil (NeH) who was returning from the push team. We left a large cairn and headed out. While having some food Rolan (RE) arrived. When he was about to ascend the 10m pitch the waterfall started to go a bit quicker. This tended to speed up our return to the smaller streamway. No difficulties were encountered even with the higher water level. On her way out Jooles (JJ) had built several cairns to make the trip across Dragons Reach to the head of the 4th pitch a lot easier. As Rauleigh (RW) was ascending the 3rd pitch from Dragons Reach, a waterfall started down the pitch. Neil (NeH) got quite wet ascending it. After a bit of a pile up at the first pitch we arrived back in camp about 8pm. Time underground 9 hours Passage mapped 207m.

Al (AW), Tony (ToW), Barry (BW) and Rolan (RE) continued along the main streamway, down a 30' pitch into a chamber. From this point the main stream plunges down a further drop, however a meander carrying a small stream was followed. A section of deep water required swimming led back to a point where the main water apparently emerges from a sump. Shortly the streamway is blocked with talus, but this can be surpassed by climbing above, another section of deep water led to some spacious dry passage, eventually returning to the active stream level. After two short waterfalls the stream sumps, but an upper level climb led via some very large passage, predicably back to the stream. A rockfall that blocked the passage was pushed through some squeezes out into spacious passage again, however the abundance of mud seems to indicate a sump may not be far off, although the passage is still going strongly. Barry (BW), Tony (ToW) and Al (AW) stayed to survey, while Neil (NeH) and Rolan (RE) pissed off.

MONDAY 9th August

4:00 pm - Survey team (Al (AW), Tony (ToW), Barry (BW)) still underground, presumably trapped by high water levels.

Henry Shannon (HS), Anne Wright (AnW). A trip intended mainly to survey the new area, but also Anne (AnW) and ??? did manage to get a look from the bridge in MR1021 and Anne (AnW) got down to a ledge in MR1020. The survey was connected into the cairn 10 in Kananda Pugwa entrance. At this stage my compass and clino were incorrectly assigned the code number 5 and this was used in computer plot. The number 6 was later substituted in the second sketch.

ps. Anne Wright (AnW) suggests a translation of "Roaring Rift" as the name for this cave. We also checked MR1019 downstream, 5m of serpentineous rushing water streamway to a waterfall at least 5m high.

TUESDAY 10th August

Midday - Al (AW), Barry (BW) and Tony (ToW) surfaced after 54 hours underground.

Henry Shannon (HS), Neil Hickson (NeH), John Wyeth (JW), Julia James (JJ) and Hugh Hanley.(HH) This trip was intended to bottom the Roaring Rift and turned into an anticlimax. The pitch was rigged and descended (through the waterfall as it happens) by Neil Hickson (NeH). From the foot of the waterfall 50m ??? pleasant 60m passage went on to a cliff face ??? exit into the big doline north of the helicopter pad. There was a cairn at the exit and footprints from the Barlow (DB) (CB) party's exploration of the doline. The water sinks in rubble.

WEDNESDAY 11th August

Julia James (JJ), Henery Shannon (HS), David Waters (DW) and Hugh Harley (HH), minor survey effort to check a flood overflow lead not very far from the bottom of the fourth pitch. A minor stream is followed over a clean rubble floor till the stream exits left, straight ahead is the lead which is mud floored and has subaqueous dune forms indicating the flow is inward. The passage gets steadily narrower as you go in, with a lot of mud adhering to the walls becoming more noticeable as you start scraping it off. After some debate consensus was that the passage be called the Muddy-Go-Round. End of the survey was determined by the passage exceeding an arbitrary value of the misery quotient.

"The passage was tall through narrow, solution pockets of phreatic style are often mud filled indicating a previous cycle of fill and removal. Some modifications to downward pointing pendants was observed indicating some solution occurring while the mud fill was in place. The passage roof is way out of sight at the start but down to 4m near the end of the survey", Henry Shannon (HS)

John W (JW) and Rolan (RE) checked out a lead at high level above the 3rd pitch, it didn't go far but was surveyed for machanistic satisfaction.

Rauleigh (RW), Tony (ToW) and Paul (PD) set out to do a photographic trip to Dragons Reach. After a pile up on the first pitch we headed for the upstream section of the cave. After taking several photos in this area we headed back and Paul (PD) returned to camp. Tony (ToW) and Rauleigh (RW) carried on with Tony (ToW) taking a photo of the first pitch. Then on down Silent World where more photos were taken. After photos of the pitch and several in the Dragons Reach. We headed out with Julias (JJ) party. Tony (ToW) got out early but Rauleigh (RW) helped Hugh (HH) out and made camp by 11:30pm. Time underground 11 1/2 hours.

THURSDAY 12th August

Barry (BW), Henry Shannon (HS), Hugh Harley (HH), Biuwe ??? ,Kilera ???. This was another effort to find the Big Hole this time based on my hypothesis that it could be located by heading NW from the helicopter pad, initially at least by following the ridge. The route taken wandered about a lot but ended on the saddle between the Big Hole and the next cave south, from which the SE corner of the hole was easily located. We were then able to go round to a lookout on the western side overlooking the divide between the SE doline and the remainder ???. Biuwe ??? and Kilera ? pointed out a waterfall in the bottom of the hole which obviously went into a shaft in the doline floor. We then went down to and across the divide and followed a ledge on the eastern wall of the main depression. Here the Duna spotted k??? and in due course pulled a mature female and immature tree kangaroo. The female fell down a cliff and with this incentive a route was found, assisted by tapes, down the 7m cliff. Once down Barry (BW) went on to another cliff line from which the waterfall in the tomo could be seen more clearly. He reports that the water sinks immediately among boulders but an opening can be seen. The other major stream in the main doline sinks into a swamp, at least to begin with. On the way out, the survey was started ??? two first lookout and continued following the track cut by the Duna to a link with the survey done by Anne Wright (AnW) and myself. During the track cutting one of the Duna cut his toe with a machete to the bone. It was bound initially with flagging tape and treated back at camp by Derek Hobbes (DH).

???

I, H,?? H, JW (JW) and Tony (ToW) put a bolt in to replace the peg that fell out in Thunderush and continued on to look at side leads beyond Thunderush. Nothing of significance was found and nothing was surveyed.

Rolan (RE), Paul (PD) and Brian E (BE) set off reasonably early to push the final sump reached by Al (AW), Tony (ToW), Neil (NeH), Barry (BW) and Rolan (RE) on the 8th. Started surveying up a mud bank on the right hand side of the sump, which soon opened out into spacious passage, floored by large mud banks. After a few hundred metres the passage opened out into a very impressive chamber, which a large rockpile stretching into darkness. A few 50m legs later, along the left hand wall a passage was noticed boring off at a negative angle, with a waterfall sinking into rockfall at the start. Time was running out before the agreed time of running away, but at the furthest point reached a large stream was reached, fed by a noisy waterfall, however this was blocked by rockfall from what is apparently a large passage or chamber above.

FRIDAY 13th August

Rauleigh (RW), Dave (D?) and Derek (DH) entered the sinking stream walkin entrance (MR1003) and rigged the 3m waterfall with a rope handline. Took photo of the waterfalls then went into the upstream lead. Reaching the 3m overhanging waterfall that stopped the previous party, we decided that it was almost impossible to peg or bolt up. We checked out a high level lead which we thought might bypass the waterfall. Standing on Dave's (D?) and Derek's (DH) shoulders Rauleigh (RW) was able to get an angle into a non-existent crack. Putting an et in the peg he was able to stand in it and get two more angles in and reach the top of the 6m climb. Dropping a handline for Dave (D?) and Derek (DH) we continued in the upperlevel by-passing the waterfall down a 5m handline. Going upstream we explored through a flood by-pass to where the water poured through rockpile. We mapped back towards the entrance. Descending the climb was fun with Rauleigh (RW) double handlining off a stalagmite, to the bottom et then standing on shoulders again to get down. With one survey leg to go the water rose drastically and the waterfall really got going. It was 4:15 pm, we decided it was too dangerous to try and head out so we sat it out. The foam in the pool below the waterfall was amazing so we called the chamber Foamfollowers Retreat. Eating a little food, sleeping in space blankets we sat it out till 12pm when the water had fallen about 0.5m. It was still very high but we thought an exit was possible. Carefully traversing several plunge pools we made it out then upstream to the waterfall which was easily negotiated. We made it out by 12:30 am and back at camp at 1am. Time underground 12 1/2 hours, Passage mapped 502m

PS Thanks to Barry (BW) and Rolan (RE) for dropping the rope into MR1001, too bad we didn't have SRT gear !

Barry (BW) and Paul (PD) returned to the Big Hole with 100m+ rope and the intention of descending the SW bluff. The initial start point did not provide a free fall so Barry (BW) reascended and another take-off point 50m further north was chosen. A substantial tree and a fern lined edge seemed to provide the desired starting ingredients. Barry (BW) went first and almost severed his support (rope) while clearing the trees on the edge while hanging on the rope. The abseil was then a free fall approx 60m to the edge of a large dry hole sloping back into the cliff face. An initial recce of this did not produce any sign of going cave. Track was cut around the walls of the doline in a clockwise direction, the first waterfalls being the most spectacular. Much stinging nettle was encountered near the bottom of the doline. All streams sank into rubble with no obvious cave development. The return from the northern most waterfall was made directly across the centre of the doline which was dry ? moss covered rocks and thence up the boulder slope to the rope. A further systematic search was made of the hole behind the rope with no obvious signs of draft or passage. While the ascent of the rope was sheltered from the rain the rest of the doline was not and by the time Paul (PD) had ascended (5pm) the waterfalls were ragging. A large stream flowed where we had previously cut track and the dry bottom had become a sizeable lake, with less than 25mm of rain. The rope was left in place.

SATURDAY 14th August

SUNDAY 15th August

Rauleigh (RW) and Al (AW) set out to climb into the dry lead 10m up the wall in Dragons Reach. Started climbing about 1pm. Al (AW) quickly reached (1/2 hour) the height of the passage by climbing a large flake. After aiding across he eventually had to put in a bolt. Al (AW) then came down for a rest and Rauleigh (RW) had a go. After having difficulties getting in pegs (2 knife blades) he had just got in a good knife blade but not clipped into it when two sets of pegs "popped" and he ended up hanging off the bolt. Al (AW) returned to the climb and after many hours and three bolts he abseiled down to the passage and Rauleigh (RW) pulled him across to it from below while he got in a peg to pull himself in. By this time it was 8pm. Al (AW) rigged a rope and started derigging the wall. After 2 hours this was completed. We headed out making the surface by 11:30pm. Time under 12 hours.

MONDAY 16th August

Stefan (SE), Rolan (RE) and Ian Miller (IM) negotiated a dry side passage off Friday the Thirteenth in Mamo Kananda, (on the 15th) to the top of a large pitch. The following day Rolan (RE), Ian (IM), Steve W (SW) and Trevor W (TW) returned and descended the 36m shaft to meet up with Al (AW), Rauleigh (RW) and Rucko (PR) who had entered the same passage via an aid climb in Dragons Reach, thus establishing a connection between Kananda Pugwa and Mamo Kananda, which was a bit of a buzz.

MAMO KANANDA THRU TRIP

FIG 003

In low water Rinse Cycle is the easiest route.

In moderate flood Eiger Connection.

In full flood use Sacking of Rome.

Al (AW), Rucco (PR) and Rauleigh (RW) went in to map the lead reached on the previous day. Exploring for 200m to an obvious aven (40m). Almost certain the connection would be made we left the Mamo 4 team a note and started surveying out. Reaching the inlet Al (AW) and Rucco (PR) crawled off to see if it went. While they were gone Rauleigh (RW) thought he heard voices so he returned to the aven to see lights at the top. A cry of "Mamo Kananda" rang out from the bottom of the pitch and cheers arose (descended ?) from the top. After rigging the pitch the Mamo 4 party descended and we had a pig out and then the Mamo 5 team completed the survey to Dragons Reach, while the Mamo 4 team completed the thru trip. Time underground 7 hours Passage mapped 323m.

TUESDAY 17th August

Rolan (RE), Stefan (SE), Al (AW) and Barry (BW) finished surveying Space Oddity, no leads were found but some photos were taken. On the way back Rolan (RE) and Stefan (SE) resurveyed The Cure, while Al (AW) and Barry (BW) derigged back to the end of Thunderush.

Rauleigh (RW), Trevor (TW) and Cathy (CG) went on a photographic trip in Mamo Kananda. Photographing several of the new passages, Tinkle Alley, Fire Escape and the Geronimo formation. Photos were also taken in the Rinse Cycle, Roll-a-go-go and Kraftwork. Time underground 9 hours.

WEDNESDAY 18th August

Al (AW), Julia (JJ), Rauleigh (RW), Paul (PD) and Barry (BW) walked to the giant hole (MR1022) off the Mamo 6 track. Al (AW) descended with a tie off to a tree down a scrub covered ramp for 40m before placing a bolt. The next 80m was free to a vegetated ledge, with a tie off to a peg for the final 10m. While Julia (JJ), Paul (PD) and Barry (BW) started an overland survey, Rolan (RE) started down the pitch only to be told the rope he was carrying was insufficient for the next 5-6 second rock fall shaft.

John (JW), Rauleigh (RW) and Rucco (PR) went to the lead off Silent World. Rucco (PR) retrieved the rope from the base of the 3rd pitch while John (JW) and Rauleigh (RW) surveyed. We mapped down the main passage for a few hundred metres then Rucco (PR) joined us. After going through a few Zig-Sags we reached a climb which Rauleigh (RW) did, only to be confronted with a pitch of about 8m. Backing off we checked the side leads with the one at pt 10 going very well. John (JW) took some photos on the way out. Made camp about ??? Time underground ??? hours Passage mapped 338m called it Zig-Sag.

THURSDAY 19th August

Rolan (RE) and Al (AW) descended MR1022 with more rope while Paul (PD), John (JW) and Ed (E?) started a survey to the top of the second pitch. The next pitch turned out to be about 200m to sump (6 rebelays were used). The ascent was uneventful apart from a peg popping on the last tie off.

John (JW), Rauleigh (RW) and Murray Little (MuL) went to continue the survey from pt 10 and down the pitch at Zig-Sag. From pt 10 the survey went well reaching a 7m pitch into a "small" active streamway. Returned to pt 10, to get the rope and food. Descending the pitch we mapped a couple of legs downstream to where the water fell about 30m into a large chamber, Dragons Reach ? Heading upstream we followed great stream canyon for a few hundred metres before it started to meander. After a few hundred metres of this it stopped at a flowstone choke. Checking leads on the way back we found a few oxbows etc. But then heading out we checked an early lead which went very well so we mapped onward. One way ended in a formation blockage, while the other carried on until the survey party ran out of "legs". Headed out derigging pitches 2 and 1. Made camp by midnight. Time underground 13 hours. Passage mapped 1056.1m

Friday 16th July

To the recipient of this letter,

Two things - people coming to Mamo;

They should use chappies to bring their surplus gear. The walk should take 3 - 4 hours. Pack a lunch for the porter who'll only have a half load I'd imagine. Let that porter know he returns to Atea the same day.

Peason - Money. Did Anne Wright (AnW) send her cash box into Atea? If not you may be running short of salary monies. If we pay 3 porters this Sunday then we're down to 2 hundred bucks only. Did Big Hickson (NeH) and Dave Martin (DM) (take money for their porters with them ? They'll be away from Atea on Sunday you see !

Think that's all Steve B (SWB)
