Saturday
5th - First day of the event with heats of all divisions
& semi finals of two divisions surfed in the afternoon. Saturday
brought us mixed conditions, compared to the pristine conditions
of the mid week. The location was Lennox Head main beach in front
of the Lennox Point hotel. We we’re met with Cloudy intermittent
rain with breaks of sunshine but we had offshore winds and a good
beach break to pick from. Surf size around the one metre mark
& working most of the day. Following the Heat rounds of all
divisions. It was decided to surf the Over 50’s & 55’s
Semifinals to make the next day Sunday a easier schedule. Standouts
on the first day of competition was Alex Glassington from Lennox
Head in the Open 9 ft with a classic noseride which was the eventual
best noseride of the event. Also the fluent style of Peter Hall
from Byron Bay in the semifinals of the 0ver 50’s. Competition
finished at about 4pm. The night entertainment was at the Lennox
Point Hotel a major sponsor, with competitors draws at the hotel
with products from different sponsors given out. A longboard from
Phil Myers Surfboards was drawn and the winner was a fully stoked
young lady from Lennox Alexandra Rodrick. The competitor draws
we’re followed by the Tri-series rugby, Australia v’s
South Africa and the a band the Lovedogs a great night enjoyed
by many.
Sunday
6th - Brought us a mixed wild day with a vast increase
in swell. Surfing was again at Lennox main the preferred location.
Some 6 to 10ft sets pounding throughout the day with some incredible
surfing from out the back from the competitors from the Open 9ft
division & a standout ride in the Old Mal final by Jackson
Close, from Currumbin QLD riding a heavy old mal in basically huge
sets,The wave of the whole event. The large waves continued for
the remaining of the day and the final event the Open 9ft Final
was a awesome sight to watch the six finalists tackle some big
waves from right out the back a real credit to them all.
The comp this year brought a contingent from across the Tasman.
New Zealand & they all preformed with distinction. Surfers
also come from as far as Noosa QLD to Victoria & entries from
South Australia.
