1889 - Born Sydney N.S.W.
1889 - Family moved to Tenterfield
1893 - Moved to Lismore
1895 - Commenced primary schooling at Lower Boorie Provisional School
1897 - Family moved to Tamworth
1899 - Moved to Broken Hill
1904 - Sister Kate Born
1905 - First job at BHP Assay Office
1907 - Sick with Typhiod Fever, but passes Exam as an Assayer, with Honours
1908 - Mother Juliette dies from Typhoid Fever, contracted whilst nursing Ion
1908 - Ion moves to Sydney to live with his Grandmother
1908 - Runs away as a Seaman on a Coastal Steamer, but soon returns home
1908 - Heads bush as an itinerant worker to Narrabri and Moree districts
1909 - Goes Opal mining at Lightning Ridge for 9 months, but has no luck
1909 - Trys Shearing and Dingo Shooting
1910 - Second season as an Opal Miner, this time has some success, also writes first article for the Bulletin
1911 - Heads North to Cairns in Qld. takes up Tin Mining
1912 - Hired by Annan River Tin Mining Co. but is Fired, so works his own Claim for Tin
1913 - Trys Prospecting and Mining in various areas between Cairns and Cooktown
1913 - Whilst Prospecting and Travelling in Cape York, meets and learns Customs of an Aboriginal Tribe
1914 - On learning of the outbreak of War, travels to Townsville to enlist in the 5th Aust. Light Horse Regiment
1915 - Serves at Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine. Invents a Machine Gun but Army Hierarchy doesn't follow it up
1918 - Returns home as Invalid from war wounds
1919 - Regains health by working-out at Snowy Bakers Gym in Sydney
1920 - Returns to North Qld.
