Bites and Stings Research

Australia has a vast number of venomous terrestrial and marine creatures.  Despite the variety of these and the number, significant effects from bites and stings in Australia are uncommon.  Although there has been some excellent research done on a number of these creatures, there remains a lot that is unknown to researchers and medical practitioners in Australia.

In an effort to increase our knowledge of bites and stings and clinical toxinology in Australia this group is conducting large, prospective studies. The research commenced in late 1998 with a spider-bite study that has now been expanded to include most of Australia. A study of scorpion stings commenced in early 2000, and most recently, in late 2000, a study of caterpillar stings. In early 2001 a study of venomous fish stings will commence.
