Breeding Black This page is intended as a quick colour guide only,. The Black horse, particularly the enigmatic Black Arabian Stallion has been highly desired and the subject of fantasy for many. The chances of producing black are increased by the amount of close- up black parentage within the pedigree. Our order of preference for breeding black is;- black liver chestnut chestnut brown bay grey Breeding with Taywoona Qovou has so far produced 7 foals #from 3 Chestnuts - 2 chestnut -1 liver chestnut - 1 black #from 2 Bays - 3 brown #from 1 Brown - 1 black #from black - 1 black At Hallowmere, although we revere the black Arabian, our Arabian mare selection has been based on quality, movement and temperament. We will not compromise the former in the quest for colour. Successfully breeding Black is attainable once we understand the genetic involved. There are several sources available in hard copy and on the www. |
Breeding Black #h denotes homozygous black x Black black or chestnut x Chestnut chestnut, liver chestnut, bay or black liver chestnut gives a much higher probability of black h- can only produce bay, brown or black x Bay bay, brown or black x Brown brown or black x Grey can produce grey, chestnut, bay, brown or black, possibilities are determined by the colour the grey was at birth and do not exclude the high probability of grey foal, [if the foal coat is black at birth the foal will most probable be grey.]
