HyperActivity Attention Deficit Association
NSW Australia
The Organisation
The Association began in July 1976, with 30 parents drawn together by their acknowledged difficulties in caring for their (then known as) hyperactive children. Some of these difficulties arose from our own lack of knowledge of the condition, its treatment and management; many other problems were due to the surprising lack of awareness in the educational and medical fields, hence in the community.
Today our membership has increased since those days and the name has changed to Hyperactivity Attention Deficit Disorder rather than hyperactivity, as the medical profession emphasise the disorder is more complicated than just hyperactivity. You can have ADHD with or without hyperactivity. Also it has now been recognised that children do not necessarily grow out of the condition and ADHD can carry on into adulthood.

We have a comprehensive range of books and articles on ADHD which we update regularly, and we recommend that you read as widely as possible on all aspects of ADHD, as understanding grows with continuing education. We have also developed and published a comprehensive Teacher’s kit on How to Manage ADHD children in Primary and High School. This is available for sale with or without overheads.
We have a Library of books, video and audio-cassettes on all aspects of ADHD, Learning Problems, Diet and Behaviour Management. These are available for borrowing by members. You may pick up the books and cassettes from the office and return them in three weeks. We do not send out books by mail, but will post videos for $20, which includes postage.
We produce 6 newsletters a year for members. These newsletters contain up to date information on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning problems and Treatments for the disorder. Membership costs $30 for new members and $20 for renewal. A new Members kit of information is sent to all new members as well as the 6 newsletters.
We have a Support group operating in Chatswood. Please contact us for the times we meet. We hold an Annual General Meeting in May each year where we have excellent guest speakers.
