What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is breathing 100% oxygen while sitting or lying in a pressurised room. The pressure used depends on the condition to be treated. But for problem wounds it is usually equivalent to 14m depth. 100% oxygen is breathed from a clear plastic hood or mask. Routine treatment generally lasts 2 hours on a daily basis, 5 times per week. The number of treatments depends on your condition. Wound healing schedules often require 20 or more treatments.

How does it work?

You are currently breathing air that contains 20% oxygen. Breathing 100% oxygen while pressurised at 14m will provide 240% oxygen. Your lungs dissolve the extra oxygen in your blood stream, which takes it to the tissues that need it. This oxygen boost stimulates damaged and healing tissues to recover fast. It reverses hypoxia (cells which are starved of oxygen), and reduces swelling. Healthy granulation tissue is stimulated and collagen fibres mature and strengthen more rapidly. New micro-blood vessels grow into the area. HBO also has antibacterial activity, helping the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
