The Harsant family have owned
this picturesque farm on Radford road at Harrisville for over 100 years. Rob's
great grandfather settled here from
New Zealand
in the
1870's. Besides beef cattle we grow maize, navy beans
(where baked beans come from!) and
Lucerne.
Our interest
in tourism grew out of a visit to
South
Australia
in 1993. We
stayed in a national Trust cottage Bed & Breakfast at
Burra. We liked the homely feel to the way it was set up.
On returning home we realised we had the perfect setting
for a host farm.
We already
had a wonderful 100 year old railway workers cottage that
had been moved here in 1940, for use as living quarters
for the farm workers. In the days when the Harsant land
was a busy dairy farm. Although derelict it was still very
sturdy. With new verandas and a railway red paint scheme
it has now been brought to life again.
A crown wood
stove now exudes a cosy warmth into the modernised kitchen
wich is attached to the main house by an open walkway. A
claw-foot bath now takes pride of place in the bathroom
and a mosquito net falls gently over the large silky oak
double bed. Eight people can now share a holiday as there
are three double beds and two single.
Nestled in
the Fassifern valley we have the perfect place for
tourists to explore Moogerah Dam and the Scenic Rim. After
a busy day they can return to Mirabel Cottage to relax in
a squatters chair and let the rest of the day fade slowly
into the sunset.
