Cumming

William Cumming was born in Killearn, Stirling about 1774. His daughter Jane (Jean) married John Hoy in Greenock in 1829.

In 1841 William,his wife, Mary, and their daughters, Elizabeth, Helen and Marion, were living in Market St, Greenock. The Hoy grandchildren, William (10), John (7), Mary (5) and Elizabeth (2) were living with them. Andrew (8 or 9) was not living with them. He may have died young, but no record for his death has been found.

In 1851, William, Mary and Marion were living at 25 High Vennel St, Greenock. With them was William Hoy (21), a seaman. As for the other Hoy children, the girls may have been old enough to go into service and John told his daughter that he ran away to sea when he was 14 and did not return.
