John Hoy may have been baptized on 19 May 1799 at Culross district, Scotland. He married Jean Cumming, daughter of William Cumming and Mary Patton, either 16 Nov 1829 or 21 Jan 1829 at Old or West Parish, Greenock, Scotland. If John was baptised 19 May 1799, his parents were Andrew Hoy and Elizabeth Drysdale. He was a seaman and was described as mate on the birth records of his children. The trade directory for 1836-37 shows him as master of the "Richmond" a ship of 520 tons in foreign service.1 He died before November 1859.
