Lewis

William Lewis and his brother Rees, were found guilty of sheep stealing 18 Apr 1829. Each received the death sentence which was commuted to transportation for life. They arrived in Port Jackson aboard the Dunvegan Castle 30 Mar 1830. William received a Ticket of Leave 10th May 1838 and was granted a second class Conditional Pardon 2nd March 1846.1

According to a newspaper report of the inquest into his death, he lived on his own freehold of 45 acres, Stoney Creek, at Jamberoo, NSW, and died there on 15 Nov 1876. William died intestate and his effects were inherited by his brother Rees, of whom we have information from other researchers.

6637 23 February 1882. By act of Court Letters of Administration of the effects of William Lewis late of Jamberoo New South Wales Farmer deceased were granted to Rees Lewis brother of deceased Intestate died 3rd (sic) November 1876. Goods sworn under £200.
