From Scots Pictorial, April 30 1898.
Mr Robert Macfie of Airds, Langhouse, and Oban, and Mrs Macfie, attained the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage last week, and the event evoked the most cordial demonstration of public and private goodwill. Addresses of congratulation and good wishes were presented to Mr Macfie by his tenantry, the Town Council and School Board of Oban, the Free Presbytery of Lorn, and other bodies, testimony being borne on every hand to his high character, his public-spirited generosity, and his excellent qualities as a landlord and friend. Mr Macfie has always evinced a warm interest in the town of Oban, where he is an extensive proprietor, one of the most recent proofs of that interest being a gift of £1000 towards the erection of the handsome block of municipal buildings which is now nearing completion. Mr and Mrs Macfie personally received the public addresses, which were presented by deputation of the bodies concerned at Airds House, and in honour of the occasion the tenantry on the different estates were entertained to dinner. Born in 1812 and 1813 respectively, Mr and Mrs Macfie were married in 1838 at Greenock, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Robert Story of Roseneath. Mr Macfie, who is closely identified with Greenock, acquired his Highland property over forty years ago.
