Version 3.1 has replaced the prototypes v2.0 (six player) and v3.0 (seven player). The old maps are provided here for reference purposes.
Versailles Version 2.0

MapMaker, Mapper etc. If you need a separate copy of the MapMaker format map as used on the Judge, please e-mail me. For those of you who run Mapper, Mapit or are after ps format maps or other MapMaker files,
David Norman's web site
is the best place to go. He has created files to support Versailles2. Just hit his site and then drill down to the appropriate page and file download. You'll need to update the Mapper files as directed.
DipChief. For those of you who use Gary Pennington's Diplomatic Chief Of Staff, I have prepared and part-tested (through DipChief v1.3.3) the required map and bmp files. See my Home Page for a link to Gary's web site, from where you can get a copy of DipChief. The 21 Feb 99 update clears up a province name gremlin. It also now includes SC control and uses new 'softer' map colours, to make it easier to distinguish the units. The files are zipped together here:
DipChief Files Filename: versailles2.zip; 26.0KB (Updated 21 Feb 99)
BMP Format. If you wish, you can access zipped colour and/or greyscale BMP maps from these links:
Colour BMP Filename: Versailles2col.zip; 29.1KB; 256 colour BMP image (Updated 21 Feb 99)
Greyscale BMP Filename: Versailles2bw.zip; 20.1KB; B/W BMP image (Updated 27 Jan 99)
The provinces are all labelled on the game map using their abbreviations. The full name for each province is included in the province list below, as is some other key province information.
It should be noted that in addition to the canal spaces from the standard Diplomacy map, Warsaw and Danzig are canal provinces. Re the other canal provinces, Kiel is now called Hamburg and Constantinople is now Istanbul, while Sweden and Denmark are unchanged. Leningrad and Caucasus each have two coasts.
Table updated 13 Feb 99 (Narvik and Irish Sea details added).

Starting Essentials: Basic '6/6' Versailles Variant v2.0
Six Major Powers (21 SCs):
USSR - 4 SCs
Britain - 4 SCs (one in the Middle East)
France - 4 SCs (one in the Middle East)
Germany - 3 SCs
Italy - 3 SCs
Poland - 3 SCs
Six Minor Powers (all 1 SC - 6 SCs total):
Turkey, Spain, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Sweden.
Plus 15 other unoccupied Neutral SCs
Total of 42 SCs. Victory = 22 SCs
Below is the draft map for the first seven player version of Versailles. It explored the option of going to a '7/7' power mix - ie 7 majors and 7 minors. This was something I had toyed with from the start of my development of the variant and trying it out has been reinforced by some comments and experiences so far from test games. Version 3 also incorporates some other ideas for balancing the starting positions, particularly with Spain, France and Poland. A perception that USSR was perhaps a little too strong is balanced by introducing Turkey as a major power. This has necessitated converting the Soviet starting army in Sevastopol back into a fleet (as in 'Vanilla' dip), to balance the Turkish fleet in Ankara.
Many have considered Spain to have unduly easy starting options and capacity to grow in the Version 2 prototype. I have tried to remedy this by some province border changes, the repatriation of the home SC in Syria back to mainland France and the conversion of the Spanish starting fleet into an army (as with the other maritime Minor Powers). The extra domestic French SC also compensates for the inclusion of Belgium as one of the two new minor powers.
Poland has now been given direct sea access through Danzig (probably the single most suggested amendment from observers) and the bordering provinces have been reworked accordingly. Greece is the other new minor power and an additional non-SC province (Thessaly) has been included to achieve a measure of separation in the Balkans. Ireland has been included as a neutral SC to balance the increased congestion in Western Europe and give Britain some more options for initial expansion - though it will still take some effort and can't be done in the first year where the designated set up is used.
Some observers have (legitimately) questioned the Caspian Sea space. It is a little unusual, in that there is no connection to the rest of the board and only the Soviets could possibly build a fleet there (in Stalingrad), with very limited scope to operate. Suggestions have included either connecting it to the Black Sea by canal spaces, eliminating the space and/or making it impassable. I have left it in, as the situation was deliberate: a canal system would (in 1929) I think be historically inaccurate. It is also pretty cumbersome in terms of game play. The reason it is there and passable is to give the Soviets an opportunity to build an 'inland sea flotilla/marine force' with which to help unravel a stalemate or provide quick movement either north/south or east west via convoy. While this may be a rare requirement, there seemed no harm in leaving it in, the alternative being to just leave it impassable, as I do want to retain the Kaz-Per 'back door'.
Another change I have made is to ensure all the neutrals in games using the designated set up can only start with armies. Where there is a free set up, it might even be advisable to enforce the same rule there too - up to individual GMs of course. This limits the power of the potential maritime minors at the start and (I think) evens up their comparative value a little. In Version 2, I think Spain and Sweden in particular begin to wield undue initial influence by starting with fleets. In conceptual terms too, I think it fair to insist that only major powers can initially 'afford' fleets as part of their inventory. Minors which build subsequently can of course build as many fleets as they are able. I think I'd apply this concept equally to a revised 'Version 2.1' as I have to Version 3.0.
Some may think that the changes make the map a little too crowded, but after a year or so pretty much any game - 'Vanilla' Diplomacy or other variants - gets filled up anyway. This situation more closely represents the the actuality on the ground - many minor powers were not simply vacuums and had significant effects in 'real time' events (I bet the Germans would have been pleased with a vacuum in Yugoslavia in 1941, prior to launching Barbarossa). It also forces players to use diplomacy rather than easy builds to expand right from the start. This version is still on the drawing boards and has been prepared after the opening year or two of the two Judge test games, feedback from other games and from interested observers. After a few more turns of the current tests on the Judge, I will probably try running a test game of Version 3 'manually' on Cat23. Any comments on the map below are welcome from anyone!
Finally, as with the previous versions of Versailles, many thanks to everyone who has offered comments and guidance. It has been and remains very much appreciated. I hope the ability of you all to help contribute to the development of the variant gives you some feeling of ownership of the product, contributes to your enjoyment of the game and may also encourage you to recommend it to others so that the number of people playing Versailles continues to grow.

The provinces are all labelled on the game map using their abbreviations. The provinces added from the Versailles 2.0 map are marked with an asterisk (*).
Other Changes from Version 2.0: It should be noted that the canal spaces in Warsaw and Danzig have now been changed back to plain land provinces. Syria is now a neutral rather than a French home SC. The Baltic Sea has been divided into two, as has Greece, including the additional of a minor home SC in Athens. Lublin has been converted into Pripet, losing its SC status, Danzig becoming the third Polish home SC. Belgium has been converted from a neutral SC to a minor home SC. The boundaries of some other provinces have been altered, especially the sea spaces around Spain. Table updated 30 May 99.
