About Bearded Ladies

Bearded Ladies, a collection of short stories,  was Kate Grenville's first book. It was published in 1984.   They’re about women on the edges of things – women for whom society’s idea of what a woman should be doesn’t work.   They know themselves to be something else altogether.  Their beards are invisible - they can pass in the eyes of others as conventional women.  But they know themselves to be something less simple and more truthful.

All of these stories are unconventional in content and some experiment with language and the short story form.
