Our Message...

Many generous people support health charities - either through donations or a bequest - particularly if they have lost a loved one from a specific disease or illness. What people may not realise however, is that this money may likely contribute towards animal experiments.

The use of animals in medical research is considered by many as a ‘necessary evil’. The majority would agree that many procedures that animals endure for the sake of ‘medical progress’ can be horrific, but they acknowledge that as the practice is sanctioned by ‘supposed’ medical experts it is something that needs to continue - even if behind closed doors.

In Australia alone, over 5.8 million animals are used in experiments each year. (source: 'Animals Today' Vol.9. No.3)  It has been estimated that thirty-three animals die in laboratories each second worldwide. (source - http://vivisection-absurd.org.uk/)

But, is the suffering really necessary?

How many human and non-human lives must be maimed and/or lost before animal-based research is acknowledged as being outdated, cruel and too often, dangerously misleading?

The use of animals cannot be justified - neither ethically nor scientifically.

Whilst many people may already be opposed to the use of animals in medical research they may feel powerless to stop it. They may not even be aware that they could in fact be supporting animal experiments through their donations.

However, there are medical charities that do not fund animal experiments.  By supporting those on the Humane Charities list, you will be redirecting vital funding towards health charities who recognise that real medical progress can only be made through studying our own species and abandoning the use of animal experiments.

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution.  Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages."  Thomas A. Edison
